The pubs and restaurants being entirely closed is a major issue. Even things like lack of toilets is pretty horrendous when you get crowds like that.

You’d have a lot more cop on with proper outdoor seating.

Exactly. People haven't been following the rules for a while

They can see the risk is low. Older people are vaccinated. It's time to stop treating us all like bold children

We can't lockdown forever. Sooner or later we are going to have to start dealing with that fact.

Ashamed of myself for caring bout the health and safety of myself, my family and people I care about? Heath and safety comes 1st. The economy comes 2nd.

You need a functioning economy to have a stable and well equipped health service, or were you under the impression that the HSE runs on grandstanding and hackneyed moralizing ?

Wonderful contribution to society they're making.

Because society has been so good to the youth of this country...

Frankly I think it is about time they stuck a big middle finger up to the rest of us.

Tony is doing the job he's paid to do which is that of Chief Medical Officer.
All he does is advise the government based on science and statistics.
It's up to the government to make the decisions and our history during this pandemic is that things have went wrong when they don't listen to NPHET.

And it's not that the Irish people can't be trusted, most are sensible but we do have a lot of gob****es too unfortunately who ruin it for the rest of us.
It's those gob****es that you should be directing your ire at.

Tony Holohan does indeed have a job that sees him advise our Government on public health matters. At this stage I don't think it's accurate to say that's all he does. He has been front and center of the Pandemic effort since it all began.

Appearances on national television and radio have helped cement his position of chief narrative driver. The authority he holds goes beyond advising. An awful lot of people look to him as a leader in all of this. I'm sure he is aware of his reach.

I have no real beef with the man and certainly none with his supporters. He is more than the CMO at this stage though and I think that is quite dangerous. Yes Covid is more transmissable than last year and while we are in a good place with vaccines who knows what's around the corner.

Tony doesn't appear to see beyond the virus though. His black and white thinking and apparent lack of human understanding worries me. I may be wrong on that and I hope I am.

These gobshìtes you mention, who are they and what is it that makes them so? Are you referring to people living their lives and trying to shake off the past year? Plenty are still extremely cautious as is their right. Those of us who are less so don't need to be scolded and reminded at every turn that "Covid 19 is still a problem".

Lack of toilets is a huge issue. Talking to a friend and family member who both now google toilets in the place they are visiting. Shopping centers seem to be one of the very few options. Can’t imagine what happens when people go out like from this tweet tonight. Just horrendous as you say. Need proper facilities or better all round to have at least the outdoor dining with access to the toilets on the premises.

Covid aside - that looks f*cking hellish

This is completely the fault of the government by delaying outdoor hospitality, it's a mess entirely of their own making, what did they think was going to happen? Dublin was clearly overcrowded today and closing of parks e.g. Stephens Green exacerbated the problem, it's an absolute dereliction of governance by council's and the government.

It’s putting me off going to rural areas as I don’t know if I’m going to have access to a toilet. A lot of places don’t officially have any available.

Mostly we were 100% reliant on pubs, cafes, hotels etc

The lack of public toilets for a country that is trying to encourage an outdoor summer is actually ridiculous, particularly in the capital. I would encourage people to email Owen P. Keegan and ask him what he is going to do as the DCC manager, because his and the council's inaction is actually making the city unsafe, between housing and this, they're a joke.

Very true. All you can if you don’t know the area is do a google search for toilets in the town. If the town has a shopping centre they will have toilets. I agree though that is a desperate problem and a very real one.

Tony is the public face of the State Organisation that is the biggest spender in Advertising in the country over the last 14 months....one of the reasons why he never faces difficult questions.

What he has witnessed this evening is what is evident everywhere ...no one cares anymore....selling fear has a short enough shelf life...

If he thinks the insubordination is bad now...wait until we see the effect and impact of the massive increase in health services waiting lists his policies have caused!!! Let alone the economic impact!

Public toilets should be linked to the Tidy Towns Competition, if a town/city doesn't provide an adequate amount it should not be possible to win the competition.

Whatever way they've been slighted, it doesn't give them the right to piss and dump their litter on the street?

Surely pubs, restaurants and cafes that sell takeaway drinks should be able to provide access to their toilet facilities in a managed capacity, but a lot of places are currently refusing this and making the surrounding areas unsanitary as a result, it's crazy.

Looks like a fair few pubs and off licences around there will be subject the the same fate as the Berlin Bar when their licence comes up for renewal.

Would well believe it but why. Friend of mine went to a shop last week, bought things, needed to use the toilet asked got a flat out no. Friend persisted and eventually they said yes very reluctantly but said it wasn’t their policy!!

About the toilet situation, it was a nightmare in Bandon, Cork when I was down there during the first lockdown, I couldn't find a loo anywhere, apart from garages in the outskirts are maybe one in Bandon Shopping Centre, actually it was locked. And the torturous journey home uphill until I could find a clump trees near the river to obscure myself and pee. :)

Somebody mentioned the Indianapolis 500 earlier.

As ever, never the the facts get in the way of a good story. Yes, there are 135,000 fans being admitted, however, the venue capacity is 400,000 *AND* entrants must be certified doubly vaccinated.

So, in fact, that event is subject to proportionately more severe limitations than our so-called test events upcoming here in Ireland.

If what Tony saw yesterday causes no rise in cases (it wont) is he still going to go ahead with a test or pilot run of having 200 people in a large outdoor venue ?

You still haven't worked out how it's done yet. Not his decision.

Whatever way they've been slighted, it doesn't give them the right to piss and dump their litter on the street?

I thought this was meant to be the caring environmentally conscious generation? Bunch of fukin hypocrites.

The same group that leave festivals in a delightful state after 3 days of camping. Its way off topic, but the littering and mess that is left behind is more of a concern to me than any risk of it being a super spreader event.

After 15 months of the headmaster schtick I don't know why I'm shocked any more, but the tweet last night really annoyed me. The lack of understanding in human behaviours and the general failure to grasp the mood amongst the 18-30 age group after 15 months of restrictions is baffling. The fact he doesn't recognise that what he saw is directly related to the glacial pace of reopening or at least allowing activities that would spread where people congregate is equally baffling.

At the end of the cmo's job is to advise the government, his opinions on twitter should be his personal ones and not be used to preach to the public as a 'government' spokesperson. Equally the media shouldn't be picking up on his rants and reporting them as if they are government policy. It is for the government ministers or the gardai to decide whether we are breaking any laws or not following guidelines.
But alas, as others have mentioned in the past, it suits them to say nothing and have the cmo and nphet as the bad guys.

I agree. Especially with what seems to be coming down the line this summer, that the young will be the only ones having to fork out money for pcr tests in order to travel, whilst the ‘vulnerable’ swan off for no cost. Paying to protect the vaccinated from a disease that poses no risk to themselves. I wish they would mobilise and protest - those pcrs should be paid for by the whole country.

In regards to pcr test a fund of 100million has been set up by the EU to make the test more avoidable for paying travellers. I don't believe it has been mentioned much in the Irish media.

He's the CMO, he's going to comment on things that look like a health risk. In this case he sees two - high levels of socialising and the even worse behaviour of drinking!
We've been here before with this type of "disgraceful" outdoor activity so many times that this barely merits a second glance. It will still lead with Pat Kenny and the RTE COVID show tomorrow!

Is there a link to that? I've seen that some places in Spain want to use EU money for PCR testing but not a specific EU fund.

But is he commenting as cmo or is it his personal thoughts he is tweeting.
People seem to forget his tweeting last year got him in a bit of bodder with Michael O Leary.
He removed the tweets at the time, when it was ask if he was tweeting as cmo or tweeting his personal opinion.
