Is there a link to that? I've seen that some places in Spain want to use EU money for PCR testing but not a specific EU fund.

It is in a article on euro news travel

A lot of the crowds around those streets wouldn’t be served on a licensed premises. No coincidence that schools finished on Friday.

I can’t imagine the state they left the pace in. And not a guard in sight. Plenty all over the roads with sneaky speed traps mind you.

Covid aside - that looks f*cking hellish

Great to see everyone out enjoying themselves

I can just imagine Tony Holohan horsing into his shredded wheat with lactose free milk this morning, face like thunder, still sounding off about the crowds last night. I'd love to see the text messages he sent Varadkar.

We've been here before with this type of "disgraceful" outdoor activity so many times that this barely merits a second glance. It will still lead with Pat Kenny and the RTE COVID show tomorrow!

His job is to advise the government; not to offer social commentary on Twitter.

The lack of responsibility to fellow humans is quite evident in this thread.

I'll be fully vaccinated next Friday but I will continue to do everything possible to prevent spread of this virus.

I can't believe pubs are allowed to open soon. Guaranteed the numbers will spiral as soon as that happens.

They're to busy annoying travellers in Dublin Airport than making our streets safe.

It doesn't matter if COVID cases rise.

What matters is how that translates into hospitalizations.

And the vaccination program has pretty much ended that risk.

Look at the UK and other countries that opened up already and things have worked out just fine.

There is no reason to assume that Ireland is going to be any different.

As a member of NPHET yes he does advise on all things COVID, but as the preeminent health professional in the country he can comment on anything that he perceives as a health risk.

    Smoking?

    Alcohol?

    Obesity?

Perhaps we can expect tweets on long queues coming out of McDonald's and how that is damaging public health. After all, the above kill far more per year than COVID could ever hope to.

Sure and you'll still be moaning about whether he has the right do so! His title gives it away BTW, the CMO is expected to have opinions on all things medical and health.

Toilets are a huge issue for us. We have a toddler potty training so there has been a lot of roadside stops because there’s no where to go. I have to be able to access a toilet and it’s a big issue for me.

I went to donadea forest with the kids, googled in advance. Got there, paid for parking and needed the toilet. Closed. Had to leave immediately, no refund on parking. It was a humiliating experience trying to get home. Ended up in tears

At least you're honest in barely disguising your contempt towards the hospitality sector, furthermore regurgitating the lie that pubs are the primary driver of Covid spread. Laughable that some will repeatedly knock them when they are regulated environments, I'm taken aback people cannot make the connection and realise scenes like yesterday are entirely avoidable. Two things: firstly you wouldn't dream of planting yourself in the shoes of a publican out of work over a year, any notion of factoring in the economic and psychological damage they've suffered? Second, nearly all the elderly & vulnerable (yes, I'm aware of cohort 7) have been vaccinated. Who exactly is at risk thereafter, considering that hospitalisations/ICU admissions have slowed to a trickle.

We just take a fold up potty with us and let the kids do the toilet wherever they need to.

Dunno what this has to do with Covid! :)

The lockdown was put in place to prevent the hospitals becoming overwhelmed, not for people contracting the virus.

That threat has now thankfully gone away as older and vulnerable people have now been vaccinated.

The virus can spread now among younger people in the same way other viruses spread all the time.

The state owes tens of billions of euro by the way.

Mr Staines turn now to try and keep this s***te going. I guess he likes seeing his mug on the media, it’s the Vietnam variant he’s now latching on to ( thankfully he didn’t hear about the Yorkshire one yet that surfaced couple weeks back) :

NEPHET regularly get their info on other countries from media sources, rather than genuine research and analysis.

It's almost as if they just read a headline.

Does the data from other countries come via migrating carrier pigeon?

It seems they are still using March 2020 data

It has to do with Covid as that is the reason they are giving for not opening public toilets in certain places. I am with the OP as I have a toddler who is potty training and no issue as you said. But similar to them I as an adult can’t use a potty and have inflammatory bowel disease the toilet situation is a disgrace and I have also been left in tears having to grab the kids and rush home due to no facilities.

OP I had a similar experience in Donadea but went to Emo court this weekend no issues toilets open and a great spot for kids to play with no entry fee only 30 mins from Naas if you are looking for an alternative to get out somewhere.

He is the Covid medical officer, because for 15 months he has clearly not given a ****e about anything that isn't covid. Unfortunately this country will be feeling the effect of that long after covid drops from the headlines.

He certainly isn't the cancer or cervical screening medical officer.

I can't believe the position Anthony Staines is in. He sent out a laughable email early last year about COVID to DCU (basically cop on to the higher ups for preparing the campus with sanitizers etc.), said what's the worry, people die of the flu every year, and was more concerned about DCU setting up for Asian students to be bullied. That was February 2020. If anything, seeing what was emerging in Wuhan from early January especially with the dramatic imagery of people being welded into homes, mass spraying of streets, building of hospitals etc., then WAS the time to be thinking a major virus was coming and not to dismiss it. By now, we can see it is a mere fraction as dangerous as originally feared. Yet Anthony is gone in the complete opposite direction. People can of course change their opinion but nah, something extremely strange for someone to go literally insane with the fear porn and be held up as a beacon of sense after his words last year IMO. He could have just kept quiet but instead sent a campus wide email berating DCU's move. Also said keeping hand sanitizer stocked was too expensive and too much work so why bother.

He can get in the bin.

Three things I took from Tony’s tweet and the scenes last night:

    1. His tone was patronising and just plain wrong. I am also sick of being spoken to like a child. Vaccinations have hugely reduced the risk, and the most vulnerable have been fully vaccinated. Give over, Tony.

    2. DCC’s lack of provision of public toilets, 15 months into this, and after government bleating for months about an outdoor summer, is an absolute disgrace. A child could see that people pissing everywhere in the streets was going to the the end result.

    3. Littering is absolutely disgusting and everyone responsible for it last night should be ashamed of themselves. Not for living their lives and having fun, but for chucking crap all over our streets, without a thought given to who is going to clean it up.

For anybody wondering about the variant in Vietnam. They observed 4 cases of B.1.617.2 with the Y144 deletion. It's a mutation found in B.1.1.7 and a few other lineages. It been around for a while.

It is not a combination of both variants and the title of "hybrid mutant" is as stupid as "double mutant" was a month ago.

There are reasons to take variants seriously. Especially more transmissible ones like B.1.1.7 and B.1.617.2 given how much of the world does not yet have access to vaccines. That said this crying wolf at every opportunity is getting beyond ridiculous.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,902 ✭✭✭Chris_5339762

Even if it was a "hybrid mutant", the vaccines work on both B117 and B1.167.2 . A hybrid of the two is very unlikely to evade the vaccines anyway - there is nothing in either of them that do, so the chances of a combination of the two evading vaccines is remote.

People seem to forget his tweeting last year got him in a bit of bodder with Michael O Leary.
He removed the tweets at the time, when it was ask if he was tweeting as cmo or tweeting his personal opinion.
When you are in that public a role you need to keep your personal opinions to yourself. Anything you publish in public will always be associated with your public role.
