Divorce - Where to start?

I am married just 6 month having got married abroad and both me and my wife have decided to end our civil marriage. We were married abroad (Gibraltar) and my wife is non-EU. We were married in a Civil Registry office.

Is it possible to get divorced sooner than waiting 2 years? Or would a marriage annulment be quicker? We have tried to reconcile and are both decided that to end the marriage is for the best and move on with our lives. We have spoken and worked out that this is for the best, there is no children involved in our relationship. We can divide all assets and money 50:50 and I am okay with this, I am in my mid thirties and just want this woman gone from my life for my own mental health now.

Is it possible to get an annulment? I want to do things watertight incase I may decide to remarry in later life. Not asking for solicitor or recommendations rather shared experiences.

    Hi OP

apart from the living situation - and the personal one, marriage is a legal contract. Given that there are no prenups in ireland she now can claim, as can you a share in any family assets, inc pensions and property etc.

I dont say this to scare you but to say that you are looking for a 'quickie' way out, when you should be looking to protect yourself, your interests and your mental health etc, by being careful.

Get legal advice. Do it straight away. Don't tell her what you are doing. Be prepared.

You’d need to get legal advice. There’s no shortening of the two year period really, especially since you’re only 6 months married.

Also annulment is not straight forward at all end can be quite intrusive. Without knowledge of the circumstances, I have no idea if you’ve grounds to even pursue that course so, I would suggest getting legal advice.

If you’re both in agreement that you want to get divorced, you might be best to draw up a civil separation agreement with your solicitors, and then proceed to a divorce by consent using that as the basis.

I’m also not sure what the options are for you in Gibraltar, but on a cursory glance, they seem to mirror those in England and may be more old fashioned than the system here. You seem to need to be married for two years before you can even apply.

The main thing is sit down with a solicitor soon and get proper advice.

Sharing my experience, I can say that I have not involved the children. Children have nothing to do with it at all. I can tell you from experience that the best thing to do is to get out of the relationship. Both mentally and with all feelings. loveless marriage is such an idea . But it's better than ruining the kids' lives . The kids have nothing to do with it. So make your own life.Think for yourself. If I were you, I'd try to find my soul mate online.
