Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That goal remains to this day the only time I have cried watching football. Sheer joy when it hit the back of the net.

RIP Alan. Your goal gave us a summer to remember.

He has been through the mill with some terribly cruel and unfortunate health issues the last 9 or 10 years.

    That's desperately sad news.

    RIP Alan.
A generation of Irish kids who grew up soccer mad in the late 80's and early 90's will always remember you.

Terribly sad news, as iconic a goal that has ever been scored in an Irish Jersey.

I remember the build up to the game. You could really feel the atmosphere at the ground through the TV.
That goal was a very special moment in Irish sport, a never to be forgotten moment.

Watched it on YouTube earlier, Bingham giving it socks trying to rile up the crowd only to have it rammed down his throat, glorious.

The most important goal I have ever seen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,295 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Like many others have mentioned, the first goal that is etched into my memory.

I know where I was and who I was with.

    Iconic moment.

    R.I.P.

The atmosphere was toxic - but he was cool eneogh to score - given where Irish football is today , how we miss players like Alan McLoughlin. Peace.

I think everyone of a certain age remembers Alan McLoughlin's goal vividly.... especially because of the backdrop.

The Troubles..... no away fans..... Billy Bingham whipping the crowd into a frenzy..... the need for a late equaliser and Denmark to drop points.

It was like a military operation. Smash and grab.

    Rest in Peace, Alan

Great servant to Ireland and his clubs

    One of my favourite memories.

And then RTÉ switches live to Spain v Denmark immediately after the game. Think it was a corner to Denmark and schmeichal had gone up for it. If Denmark scored we were out!

    Rest in Peace Alan.

Very saddened to hear about this. His goal is one of my all-time favourites. Seems like he was a nice, humble man off the pitch too.

I was living in England at the time, watching the game in a house full of English lads, who just could not "get" the whole scenario.
I went bananas when the goal went in. Just waited to see if they were going to disallow it for some reason, and then went crazy.

54 is absolutely no age - sympathy to his family.

One of the most important goals clever scored for us.

    A legend of a man.

You made the dream a reality

just remembered Apres Match were doing analysis on the 1990 WC games in early 00s. they were doing the england game analysing Sheedy's goal stopping the footage just after the shot when McLoughlin was a mile offside, saying he was just on his way back from the shops he was so far off. was hilarious analysis.

Jaysus that was a tense night in Belfast and then waiting for Spain to hold out against Denmark for another 5 minutes after the Irish game finished. The only other time I shat my pants so much was against England in '88.

    Very sad.

That goal was legendary. Up there with Houghton in 88 for me.

Given the context of the game, it probably shades it.

    RIP, far too young :(

    RIP Macca.

He was as much a legend at Portsmouth as he was in Ireland. 361 games, 68 goals followed by academy and then first team coach. As well as summariser on the local radio station for Pompey games.

The common theme in all the tributes to him, is what a fantastic guy he was.

Good one after Sheedy scored against England in Italia 90. McLoughlin had strayed off side and he shat himself as he looked across expecting the offside flag.

Alan's goal is one of the most memorable moments of my life. I was 10 and still remember I clearly.

By all accounts he was a very nice guy. RIP.

I have seen some wonderful tributes to the man since.

Portsmouth have just had one there before their final league game of the season, prior to that being shown on Sky Jeff Stelling gave his own.

I saw Niall Quinn speak highly of him earlier on in the week.

54 is no age but it seems he has left a lasting mark with all his fans through 'that' goal and a lasting memory of his character with those who worked alongside him.

Hopefully that can provide great comfort to his family.

    Rest In Peace

There are only a handful of goals seen on tv I can vividly recall the where, the when, how I was feeling just before and just after.

    He'll never be forgotten.
