Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No I mean last season, when he benched Darwin when Gakpo was signed. Darwin was in form amidst that.

I get what you're saying about Gakpo suiting our system more, but it didn't really change the end result of last season, did it? Darwin as you said yourself seems to be a form player, so not dropping him last season is one of those what ifs for me.

I think the midfield are 2-3 games off being a passing machine for Darwin just yet, McAllister missed nearly a full game, Endo hasn't finished a game with 10 teammates yet, and we still have to introduce gravenberch.

A couple of games with hurricane Nunez and then give him Diaz and Salah the start in the Europa League game, see where we go from there.

Where are people watching this today? I assumed it was going to be LIVE on sky sports.

shoukd be a very decent game, pity it only being shown overseas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,510 ✭✭✭✭noodler

    It did though.

Our second half of the season form was better than the first half.

Gakpo was a big part of that (and tbf Jota coming back fit)

Edit: Also, when was the period Nunez was in for and then was dropped? I can see two goals against Southampton at home in December. He then starts the next three with no goals and then doesn't score again for two and a half months?

This is a game that must be won. Villa are tough sure, but dropping points against them at home not acceptable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,106 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

It is going to be a difficult game. It's art up perfectly for Villa to sit back and counter into the space behind Trent & Matip with Watkins leading that with his pace.

I'm not sure who will play up front. Villa seem to be chopping and changing their formation at the back side the Mings injury so it's hard to know if they play will high or deep. I think that Nunez's physicality up against Pau Torres might be an asset.

For me it has to be 4-2-3-1. Given that Van Dijk and Konate are out the sensible setup would be to make the team compact, no need to run the gauntlet of Alexander-Arnold joining the midfield. Keep it simple and maintain the shape at the back so that Villa have to at least work for their scoring opportunities.

The back line picks itself, and the midfield should setup with Mac Allister and Endo as the double pivot with Szoboszlai ahead of them.

I'd have Gakpo on the left with a view to Diaz replacing him later in the game. I didn't think Gakpo in the Firmino role worked against Newcastle early on. He looked like he was occupying Szoboszlai's space, having him on the left should prevent that and he also links up better with Robertson than Diaz has in the past.

Given the option of Nunez or Jota to lead the line, I'd go with Nunez as he brings an element of chaos for the opposition to worry about. Jota can be largely anonymous in a game and then poach a goal but he doesn't worry the opposition.

    Sounds good to me.

just wondering will he leave endo out altogether and start mc and sobo as holding two with gakpo/Elliott behind Nunez with salah and Diaz on the wings

jota on bench for impact , possibly gakpo

Anything could happen in this game, we'll probably have to score 3 to be sure of a win,so long as it's not 7-2

Will be interesting to see how Matip and Gomez play in the heart of Liverpool defense today. A real test

Robertson sitting in a back 3, while Trent wanders to cause havoc, working well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,489 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Diaz should have squared the ball the Nunez instead of cutting back in.

Nunez really should of finished that himself but we'll take the bit of luck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,042 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Not sure that's a foul from Nunez there... just looked like two lads falling over each other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,489 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

How the hell was that a foul by Nunez, so crap by linesman

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,730 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

    Listening on the radio..

    What did Joe do there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,042 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Gomez very lucky there that McGinn smashed it over

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,042 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

He got to the ball first, then slipped and gave it away to give up a great chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,798 ✭✭✭Ken Tucky

    Usual Joe so.

Thanks..seems to be doing alright otherwise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,694 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

    Unlucky Darwin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,042 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Darwin's finishing is so very nearly perfect... it's like he's always hunting for the spots just inside the post. Twice hit the bar in this game now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,612 ✭✭✭eigrod

Diaz getting kicked all over the park.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,394 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

He had to scope that one higher as the defenders foot was so close. Would have been some goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,791 ✭✭✭✭Charlie19

We're giving up some amount of chances, it could be easily 4-4

Nunez in the lineup today was a great call.

I know it's easy to say he had to play after last week, but Jota was brilliant last week and doesn't start. So it wasn't an automatic call.

The Villa high line is begging to be destroyed, and Nunez has been loving it so far.
