Because of the nature of the injury and the fact that he's playing a physical sport at an elite level.

It takes time for knee injuries to fully heal, Van Dijk is lucky in so far as he has had a team of specialists dedicated to helping him and tailoring a programme to get him back playing but even with that it needs time to fully heal. He had a relatively quick recovery period but that brings with it risks of other injuries because of the relative strengths of the muscles and tendons around the knee. Given the amount of games he has played in the period since his return he should be past the risk of such injuries.

The next segment of the process is primarily psycological. Van Dijk will know himself that one leg is stronger than the other and that will affect him on the pitch. It usually takes about 12 months of playing to get the consistency back and one day he won't be able to tell the difference.

I think it was The Athletic that did some articles about the varying experiences of football players recovering from the same ACL injury, a lot of them spoke of the psychological element being the longest and most difficult to deal with because they are so used to dealing with the physical challenges of the sport.

It shouldn't be up to us to not even graze a shoulder because they're theatrical. It wasn't a foul, and referee corrected himself.

It's what VAR should be for.

I would have said that was a soft penalty if it was given. The way the player went down way after the contact showed he was looking for the penalty. On balance a fair call that, but Jota needs to be careful.
