Lovely front 9 from him yesterday but got a bit ragged on the back. Was rushing to finish his round in the end but held it together enough to stay under par. Great putt for birdie on the last in the darkness.

This must be his best position after Rd1 in a long time in a major?

Its actually his worst start to a US Open since 2018. Last year he was in 5th after a 67, in 2019 he was in 8th after a 68.

It's all relative. I guess he is where he would like to be, well in the tournament. He can't afford a slack round though today or any other day if he wants to make it number 5.

Was just thinking this, hasn't his rounds 2-4 been the best cumulative score the past few years? Interesting how/if he drives on from here

Some of the up and downs he managed yesterday were seriously impressive. I think he should contend on the weekend here, fingers crossed.

Also, not golf related but that buttermilk yellow top with the white pants is atrocious.

Real signs of huge progress been made regarding Rory's short irons under the tutelage of Pete Cowan, which has been a huge issue for Rory in the past. The 12th hole, his third hole of round 2 saw Rory hit a 330 yard plus drive to the fairway. 160 yds to the pin and knocks it stiff, 13 inches to the pin with his second shot and a tap in birdie followed. Very good to see.

    Not really.....
    Short clubs still an issue.
Working with Pete Cowan particularly on his driving. Which is madness

Unfortunately it’s beginning to look like he’s saving the 75 for Friday rather than Thursday. Needs to at least get a birdie on the 18th.
    So frustrating as a fan.

Is that right? If he's focusing on his driving he's a complete idiot. I just don't believe that could be true.

Wheels are coming off here. Was in a great position after the bonus birdie on 13 but then stupid mistake after stupid mistake.

Bogey with a wedge from fairway
Easy up and down now completed
Short sides himself on par 3.

Lovely 3rd shot into the par 5, good chance of birdie.

Yeah thats right! A complete idiot!

That's where his focus should be.

He really needs to close this round out no worse than where he is at even par. He’s not playing great but if it ends up as a 72 he’ll be right in the tournament. He could easily make another 3 or 4 bogeys with the way he’s playing so has to keep it together and make a score.

Not playing well, hopefully gets through the round without too much damage.

Risking missing the cut now. Once he's in reverse there's no forward gear

Words fail me on how frustrating he is to follow. Pathetic stuff here since the 14th hole. Just dumb mistake after dumb mistake and then can’t hole a putt to just steady the ship.

He is completely frustrated but only has himself to blame for these bogies. Missing in all the wrong spots. He really needs a massive kick up the hole.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Battled well over his last 4 holes and unlucky not to birdie all of them.

If lead stays the same he isn’t out of it. You can see that there is plenty of good stuff in his play. But the stupid errors are really frustrating and he never seems to allow himself build some nice momentum in a round.

Did well to limit the damage despite playing poorly, 7 bogies! Still in with a squeak.

He's still in it. Looks like most did similar to Rory yesterday. The two at the top will fall away. Needs to really play better though

It's hard to fathom what a XXXX he is if this is the case. XXXX. And must be surrounded by yes men. How could anyone with his ear not tell him to cop the fck on and focus on what is costing him. How could a coach, in good conscience, not have a straight conversation and tell him something like...if we're going to work together then this is what we will focus on.

Mcliroy must b very stupid. All the coaches on here with there advice and he completely ignores it. But the club golfer knows everything as he comes in with his 36 points. As a 18 stone 10 handicapper said at our club last year “ he wouldn’t win a turkey at our place” pure bull****.

How do people here know he's only focusing on his driving? He literally said in the interview after his round he was off to the range to practice his irons with Cowen!

  • Registered Users Posts: 322 ✭✭plastic glass

Is the thread title not a bit stale? His last major was 7 years ago.

He isn't just focusing on driver with Cowen, that was just made up for some reason.

He will always have those majors

Hitting it very well off the tee so far today but just not hitting the wedges close enough then. If he keeps hitting the greens I’m sure one or two putts will eventually drop

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Big chance missed on 11 after a great tee shot. Wasn’t the easiest downhill putt though.

Playing really well and 2 under for the day is probably the worst he could be. Not making birdie on 9 was criminal though

Some chip in there on 12.
