Bogey on 11th killed any momentum. Bad Iron OTT and on one of the easier holes on the course. Also bogeyed the easiest hole on 15.

10 shots back right now. He's not winning this one either.

Saw the groundstaff raking a hill into the bunkers early this morning.

I presume its to give the ball a chance to roll into the centre.

Pity, I love to see the pros like like the rest of us sometimes.

Rahm and McIlroy looked shocked when they finished in the bunkers on 18 last night. Lads if ye try make the green in 2 from 250yds, there might be a toll to be paid.

Major no5 isnt happening this week I'm afraid at least 8/9 behind going into w/end

His ‘talent’ has been a myth for a good number of years now

No surprise he’s failed again in this tournament. And the fanbois will wail and make all sorts of excuses

The birdie on the last was important...I would not write him off just yet but he needs to go very low tomorrow and hope he's not to far back going into Sunday

Yes indeed , “ talentless Rory Mcilroy “ , a fair assessment of the man

Some amount of trolls/haters around here this week and all directed at McIlroy. The guy is under par, only 12 players ahead of him out of a field of 155. Rahm will just make the cut, Scheffler also -1. Top three in world. Presumably those lads are chokers as well and deserve slagging?

Will McIlroy win this tournament? Almost certainly not. Will he finish top 10? Almost certainly. Will it be a failure? Debatable, but undoubtedly disappointing.

As I post this -5 is second. If it stays that way he could still have a chance. But obviously reliant on going low tomorrow and Harman collapsing. Harman is a great player but always a possibility, especially for someone who has never won a major.

Let's save the post mortem for when the event is over.

McIlroy in a great position going into weekend. Take Harman out of it and he's only 3 off the leading pack at moment. Well in contention to win this

3rd favourite in bookies too which shows they still think he's well there

I wouldn't be putting any money on him to win this.

But 2nd or 3rd there for the taking, if he can have a stormer of a round, which he's capable of.

Some amount of knee jerk reactions in here.

Fair enough if Harman posts two under par rounds in a row he'll win in a canter. Pretty big if considering his win rate and general performance at the business end of tournaments.

3 under could well be second at the close of play. All Rory has done so far is not shoot himself out of it unlike a lot of others.

We'll see how things look tomorrow night and by the back 9 Sunday.

This is it. Long way to go. Rickie Fowler was as good as -11 in the second round of the us open and finished at -5. Schauffle was similar. Bar Harmon lighting it up over the first 2 days no one else has managed to come close. There is nothing to suggest he will be able to keep that up.

    The "talentless" Rory McIlroy 😂.

Worth approximately £200 million. I'd love to be that talentless as well.

He's 4 off 2nd with 36 to play. Harman has had an amazing 36. The question is can a lad who's won 2 PGA titles in 9 years maintain this form, if yes Rory is pretty much out of it. If we think Harman plays over across 36 with pressure mounting then Rory is very much still in this.

He can shoot par for the next 2 rounds and probably win

Can he handle the weather is probably more important

    Can anyone

Rory will be up at the top level, or thereabouts, for quite some time to come, he has had a great career. He's an excellent golfer. I am not sure if he will win another major, but he is still going to be well up on the leader board.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,621 ✭✭✭DJIMI TRARORE

On reflection overnight,I'd expect Harman to implode, not a regular winner/major contender,Rory is probably only a couple of shots behind, not really out of winning this ,2 68s could do it,-6/-7/-8

Harman has been a class apart. Played fantastic and was great to watch. Can't help but laugh at constant commentary theme on him being a shorter hitter. It's not like he's on the ladies or senior tour. Always prioritises position over bombs from the tee. His putting and short game/scrambling are as good as the best on tour.

Rory like most has found it hard. A couple of loose short putts he'll be pissed with. Tbf he got those back with a couple of long ones. If you took away Harman's exceptional performance thus far he'd be well in contention just too much left to do.

Harman puts together two steady rounds and I don't think he'll be caught. Otherwise someone from the the "pelethon" needs a couple of monster rounds. Just too much to do for Rory barring a big stumble form Harman. Although it would be class for Fleetwood to break his duck with a essentially a hometown major. Maybe Fitzpatrick could give him a bit of friendly advice and chasing a lead is less pressure too.

One would have to think today's the day for Rory if any even remote chance of a win is to exist . Could be a tad easier to rattle up a score than in the cauldron of a final day.The weather looks benign enough and some early starters (admittedly under no pressure at all) have brought in 4 under.

Rory probably needs at least that and maybe one or two more to get into meaningful contention. One thing he has going for him is that the two leaders may get a nosebleed from being in unaccustomed territory .

As the legendary Yogi Berra once memorably opined - 'It ain't over till it's over' !

The difference between Harman and the rest is his short game. While others miss greens and have a couple of bogeys he's hitting all shots around the green pretty close and he's a good short range putter as well.

Rory needs to tidy up his game. Course management is the most important thing for him.

Tiger showed how you win on this course in 2006 hitting his driver once over the four days.

That was on a baked course where the ball ran for ever.

Use that strategy this weekend and you'll be lapped. Rambo been out with the big stick and is tearing it up and looks like Rory will do the same.

Let's see how Harman does today, it's a completely different ball game to freewheeling through the first two rounds.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,520 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

His average driving distance is 295 yards, outside of Rory there's nobody hitting it more than 25 yards further than him.

You have to look at accuracy too though. Harman hits 67% of fairways off the tee, Rory hits 53%.

As long as that is going on Harman has a big advantage as he is getting a good run on the ball and has a much easier approach.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,235 ✭✭✭big_drive

McIlroy looking very in control of his game so far today, excellent start

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,913 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

He's definitely got the eye of the Tiger today, let's hope he keeps it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,014 ✭✭✭✭paulie21

    Harman bogies the first

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,913 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

He undoubtedly played brilliantly the first two days, but now we'll see what he's made of.

The Open has been lead by dozens of Brian Harman's at halfway before down through the years and very few of them get their hands on the claret jug.

  • Registered Users Posts: 127 ✭✭zocklie

Rory's looking good with the wedges since the PGA. Hot start, hope he keeps the foot down now.

Also don't know how Rory can grow up playing Portrush and not be comfortable in the wind. Maybe he's like the rest of us and no one is comfortable in the wind 😅

For every James braid you have your Ian baker finc

You just gotta be great for 4 days

Putter has just cooled down slightly, which is always the concern.
