    No.

Maybe a change of career might be the safer option.

I don't know what business owner would need a pistol for self defense, but that doesn't mean they can't get one. I've heard stories about AGS authorizing a handful of people to carry weapons for personal protection but that would be for cases of credible death threats, ie the likes of Veronica Guerin. So in summary, it would only be "business men" like Gerry Hutch and Christie Kinnehan who would need such protection, but getting a legal firearm would be the least of their worries.

In fairness if one was in the cement business around Cavan a 12 banger and a bad attitude would be in order.

Such authorisation does not come from anyone in the Gardai. They probably make the recommendation to grant or not based on a security assessment but as far as I know it’s the Minister for Justice who decides.

I wouldn’t have a clue how many, if any, of that type of authorisations are in place but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s in the low double digits outside of military and law enforcement.

Anyhow, I don’t think we really concern ourselves with such matters on the shooting forum. It’s licences for hunting and sporting firearms that are our concern.
