    Hi

I have been working for a Small IT services company (roughly 25 employees)

the company is owned by two brothers one has a majority

the majority owners wife started working with the company around the same time
she is supposed to be reception/coordinator but is hardly every there she comes and goes as she pleases, part of her job is to ensure that the engineers have enough work to do

so at times in the current climate we are having quiet days (days when only 2 or 3 emails will come in)

The boss will go ballistic that we have very little work on our time sheets and give out that we should have more work to do.

recent email from him read as follows

    "subject: The sun is shining

But team that was spectacular poor day work effort.
Lets get past second gear team"

no having worked there for so long i don't really take any notice of his stupid emails but recently
with covid last year the company has been more busier and we were working out of hours regularly which most often we don't get paid for, sometimes we do but its random amounts ie could be €200 for a full Saturday or could be €100 for working 5-6 hours on a weekday night.
sometimes he will use the excuse that because you only had 4 hours recorded on Tuesday
that it balances out. even though we were available for work if it came in but it was a quiet afternoon

so it really annoys me that he gives out when we are flexible when possible.

then there is the fact that we were all placed on TWSS last year
and they purchased a fleet of new vans vans outright during this time
and also just before covid purchased the entire building which the company used to rent
    which has about 30 offices,

then during covid the company purchased two apartments to rent out.

i asked for a pay rise at the start of this year after they purchased the second apartment
and was told the company couldn't afford to at the moment due to covid which was a lie.

the boss is now complaining to about a few people to a newer employee that certain people haven't enough time recorded and has threatened to fire one of us at it is annoying him because we think we can do whatever we want
(the 3 he has threatened have all been employed for 10+ years)

i have started looking for a new job as i have decided that this company is two toxic to work in any more.

i am lying up late at night worrying what kind of comment is going to get passed the next day of if i can manage enough work to keep him off my back.

Just in relation to TWSS, this subsidy has nothing to do with spending, it is linked to reduction in income. If your employer makes purchases from savings or borrowings, that does not mean they are ineligible to receive TWSS.

Find another job and leave - things simply won't change where you are!

I'm not sure what the issue is here?

    * Boss is upset sometimes you aren't really doing any work (you admit this yourself).
    * Sometimes you're extra busy and you're expected to do some paid overtime.
    * Company are making financial decisions (such as buying new vans) which they consider to be higher priority than your request for a pay rise.

Boss seems to be a bit emotional but apart from that it sounds like the place is fairly relaxed, perhaps too relaxed?

By all means get another job and then leave.

You are doing the available work to a required standard, what more does he expect you to do ?

You can’t ‘invent’ work for the sake of it....

I have worked for / with people of the same mindset....

One a call center around 20 years ago... the campaign we were on was busy during the week but died a death at weekends as the product didn’t advertise on tv / radio at weekends... the manager used to flip if we were just playing solitaire or doing whatever... “ lads you can’t be just sitting around yapping and playing solitaire “... he gave us letters to put in envelopes that work was usually done by the ‘fulfillment’ team... then on Monday he’d be moaning at them when they’d nothing to be doing for the last three hours of their shift because we gave them a head start.... a headcase !

For starters get your CV up to date and start looking for jobs with a higher salary in another company. Remain professional at all times. Remove all of your personal stuff from the premises because when you present your resignation you are likely to be escorted to the door.
Family firms can be a nightmare especially when they start employing various other members, wives, brothers and children etc...

Get looking for a new job

We are in a similar industry and recently needed to recruit 4 new technical staff and it was a nightmare finding staff. Eventually we got the staff but had to pay top dollar for them.

With security and remote working technology being the hot topics most of our customers need to transition and upgrade which means there is plenty of work out there
