Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I know they had a problem with the non-South American invitees having to withdraw, but the Copa America format is horrific this year.

Two groups of five playing round-robin, with the Top 4 in each group qualifying for the quarter-finals.

It makes our Euros with its 'Top 2 + 4 Best 3rd places' seem ruthlessly competitive by comparison.

Would normally love a bit of the Copa America in years where theres no Euros / World Cup going on but with the Euros overlap this year and format of the Copa, i'll have little interested outside of the the semis.

Interesting to see BBC are showing every game, with the Euros also on BBC theres probably going to be days where they're covering 6 games a day!

I say the BBC coverage will just be showing a World feed of the games and joining them right before kick-off

The BBC are the main rights holders for the Tokyo games in the UK. The BBC will sublicence from Eurosport starting with the winter games in 2022.

Ah yeah most likely, I just meant its a lot of FTA football back to back on the one channel. Not complaining mind you!

I'd say any football at the Olympics will be buried behind menus and submenus on the red button/iPlayer exept for the GB women's team perhaps.

Copa America; Tournament left without hosts after Argentina removed

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/57304063
Argentina was originally set to co-host with Colombia, who were removed on 20 May after protests in the country.

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) said Argentina has been removed because of the "present circumstances".

The country is currently experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases.

They're curently trying to decide where to host but
Organisers are reluctant to call the tournament off because of its financial importance. The last Copa America, held in Brazil in 2019, brought in $118 million and was the second-biggest annual source of revenue after the Copa Libertadores, the equivalent of Europe's Champions League.

1 minute into ET and the Italians are down to 10, yet another red for Italy, second yellow.

Hopefullly one shootout between the two matches anyway! Though as you mentioned, you'd have to fancy Portugal now with Italy down to 10 men.

Portugal play some lovely stuff going forward.

Absolute sitter missed by Denmark to win it against Germany too.

Isaksen skinned the whole Germany defence, and cut it back to put it on a plate for Faghir with an open goal from 5 yards - but instead of just sidefooting it in first time, he took a touch, and a defender slid in.

Pens about to start between Germany and Denmark now, as Portugal get a 5th against 10 man Italy.

I see Premier Sports are showing 4 World Cup qualifiers from South America tonight:

    Bolivia vs Venezuela (9pm)

    Uruguay vs Paraguay (11pm)

    Argentina vs Chile (1am)

    Peru vs Colombia (3am)

Argentina/Chile might be worth staying up for.

You can see why to be fair to them. It was only played for 2 years ago so doesn't have as much significance. Coupled then with leaving a relatively safe continent for a country which has been a basket case when it comes to Covid.

I know it's a nice cash cow to be milked, but for an ostensibly 4-yearly tournament, CONMEBOL seem not to need much of an excuse to squeeze in extra editions. The "2020" competition was to have been the 4th Copa América in 6 years, and was only moved out because of the pandemic.

As I understand it 2019/2015/2011/2007 etc were the real competitions on a 4 year cycle.
2016 was a joint venture with Concacaf so is regarded as a somewhat separate affair.
Sometime around 2018 it was decided to have future Copa's at the same time as the Euros, but it was also decided to continue with the already scheduled 2019 edition.

So the choice was either to have a 5 year or a 1 year gap after 2019. 5 years was regarded as too long a gap, so they decided to go with a 2020 edition as well.
In theory it should be 2024/28/32 etc from now on, same time as the Euros. But it is South America so anything is possible.

Colombia vs Argentina is kicking off at midnight in a World Cup qualifier. Premier Sports are showing it. Zapata leads the line for Colombia; Messi and Lautaro Martinez start for Argentina. Aguero on the bench.

Colombia could do with a result as they're sitting outside the qualifying spots atm.

1-0 Argentina inside 5 minutes. Great header from Cristian Romero. He's having a great year.

2-0 Argentina minutes later. Paredes with great close control and slots it home. Colombia fans were making a lot of impressive noise but they've been silenced now.

Emi Martinez subbed after a heavy collision.

2-1. Muriel converts a pen early in the second half. Game on.

2-2. Substitute Borja with a stoppage time equaliser for Colombia via a header. Marchesin probably should save it. Reckon Martinez would have stopped it. Foyth lost the ball in the build up to it.

Full-time. A fun game. Hope Martinez isn't seriously hurt.

Gabriel Jesus just sent off against Chile for an absolutely crazy flying kick into the jaw of a Chilean in the Copa America quarter final!

It was a ball to be challenged up in the air, and for some insane reason he came flying in with his boot at head height.

Brazil had just gone 1-0 up and looked good - this changes the game totally now, with 40 minutes for Chile to take advantage of the 10 men.

Just watching the Brazil Chile replay on the BBC now and saw Jesus' flying kick there a minute ago, his boot seemed to catch Mena right under the chin. Im surprised it didnt end in a brawl between the two sides, Mena shook his hand before Jesus left the pitch after his red.
