Import Duty discussion regarding buying a PC

I've been looking at buying a PC from Scan.co.uk and was given a quote through their sales team which included the normal VAT but was also told there would be a 20% added import charge.

I asked another member of their team about this and mentioned that other PC sellers (PC Speciality etc) were not adding an additional 20% charge, that staff member got back to me and clarified that "There would not be a 20% import charge" but that I could be required to pay some import tax, although they were unable to confirm how much that would be.

Looking on money guide Ireland's website https://www.moneyguideireland.com/irish-customs-duty-on-uk-online-purchases.html

It does say that 'Computers & Computer Parts' are items that can be imported to Ireland without Import Duty.

It's all very confusing at the moment so I'm just looking for advice from folks on here regarding this. I don't want to order an expensive build and then be hit with a huge charge at the door. It also seems that tech company's are unsure of the procedure at the moment either.

    Any advice would be great.

If they charge you UK VAT then you will also be hit with Irish VAT on import so you end up paying double VAT. Unless things have changed very recently Scan will NOT charge the Irish VAT so this is what will happen.

There is no duty though but an extra 23% (plus some handling charges from whatever courier they will use for collecting that from you) is more than enough to mean it's madness to order from them.

    Appreciate the reply.

Any suggestions for a site to use, aside from PC Specialist (not a fan of their cases etc)

They dont yet, from what i can see:
    Do you ship internationally?
We have suspended delivery to all European countries due to Brexit, we are working with our delivery partners to restore service in the coming weeks.
The following information will apply once service has been resumed

Also, if you try and update your details the only options for country is the UK.

I bought from scan for years, both for home and work kit, and found them great to deal with. I wanted to upgrade to an RTX card for the last few months; apart from the additional costs due to brexit, the ridiculous waiting list for a card made me look elsewhere. Only way I could get a 3080 for anything short of scalper pricing was to go prebuilt.

Thought about dell, but the thoughts of non standard mobo, PSU etc. put me off. I ordered from ankermann.com, worked out really well, got the PC <10 w.days delivered. Pick you build, order it and they check your config & let you know if they have stock, etc.

Got a well built PC, well packaged as well,GPU held in situ with expanding foam pack thing so it easily survived shipping. I would have preferred to do another ITX build-had a Dan case A4 ordered at one stage ready to go, but too much grief of getting parts.

They can give you a quote, shipping with DHL if you message them.

I rang both overlockers and scan today regarding shipments to ireland.

Overlockers said that if i placed an order with them over the phone that they would deliver to ireland.

Scan said that due to brexit restrictions that they unfortunately could not guarantee me delivery to ireland at this time but they expect that situation to be resolved in the coming months.

Pretty much what i had heard on the ordering grapevine

So, update from SCAN. They can ship me a PC build with no added UK VAT. The only VAT I would be viable for is Irish VAT. Assume this means I’d only be hit with the standard Irish VAT of 23%?

Yup. Once there's no VAT charged at the point of sale it's only Irish customs that'll charge you VAT when it enters the country.

    Excellent, thanks for the reply.

Sorry for digging up the topic, but does anyone know if the scan still works that way? I didn't find anything about Irish VAT, only VAT included (I imagine it's from the UK)

I would like to buy an nvme 2230 for the steam deck from their website (I don't know if it's a good deal to buy from aliexpress)
