Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Galaxy J4+ keeps restarting. Seeking help.

I was gifted a perfectly working Galaxy J4+ phone. Running Android 9.

To clear the previous owners data I did a full FACTORY RESET.
I inserted my own SIM and then went through the setup process.
It applied some updates to the preloaded apps and appeared fine.
I could make and receive calls. I put the phone down for a few minutes.
When I returned later, it had restarted and was requesting the SIM code again.
I restarted in SAFE MODE with the same results.
I restarted without the SIM installed. Same results.

No matter what I tried, the phone restarts when left alone for a few minutes.
Any advice or comments would be welcome.

If you leave the phone plugged in does it also behave the same?

    Hi, thanks for your interest.
Yes, it continues to restart whether it's on battery or plugged in.

Have you tried doing a factory reset and not updating apps / not logging into Play Store? Does it still reboot itself?

No, but I will do now. Results to follow.

I did the factory reset without the SIM installed and with no wi-fi.
    So no updates.
The phone no longer restarts whether it's plugged in or on battery.
It works fine on the limited things it can do without a connection.
What do I conclude from this and what do I do next?
As soon as I enable wi-fi, it will start doing some upgrades - but I have no idea what they are for or why they happen.
Thank you again. Sounds like some progress.

Good so it's something to do with a preinstalled app update. First thing I would do would uninstall any preinstalled app that you don't want so they won't get updated. Also disable any preinstalled apps that you don't want / use ( the ones that won't let you uninstall them. ). Finally log into PlayStore.....

Also disable automatic updates in the PlayStore and manually choose which ones you want to update going forward...

I did as you suggest but some apps could not be disabled. I deleted and disabled everything in sight.
As soon as I turned on wi-fi, it said 'complete setup by installing apps' from Google Play Store. Then 'updating Google Apps'.
But it is no longer doing regular restarts. Great. Thank you.

    One more question please:

Is it possible to completely wipe a phone and install a basic Google version of Android? i.e. removing all the Samsung overhead.

You can "debloat" some Samsung phones using a computer, a USB cable and the "adb" software. You can also install a launcher such as Nova which will make it look more like a Google phone.

I take it you have tried with no memory card inserted if one's there?

Yes, there's no memory card installed.
