I like the Prometheus as a tactical concept but in terms of looks...

    The Akira.

No contest, Akira. From the right angle, like the ones in the gifs, she's gorgeous. It's also weird in that the class leader is the only ship in Star Trek I know of named after a personal name as opposed to a family name. The real reason was it was named after the anime film but in universe it's odd.

The Prometheus isn't a bad looking ship the multivector thing is cool but I have to imagine if it was ever mass produced the ships would end up like my Armada II separated Galaxy classes with mismatched sections left over after a battle.

The Akira class for me as it is one of my all time favorite Star Trek ships and ots just looks beautiful yey powerful too as well as been fast and maneuverable.

The Prometheus is a good concept but it's just not the best looker here.

    Akira class.

Point of order. The Klingon Bird of prey contains at least 2 classes, of vastly differing sizes. Lumping them all into one is out of order and it should be disqualified. 🤣

I hate ships with 4 nacelles in any case, always feels like a lazy choice (even more nacelles!!), but the Akira class is simply a superior looking ship. Has a great shape to it and something of the Miranda about it too...

Actually the Prometheus has 5 nacelles one is hiding and at least it had a good reason for having them all for its multi vector assault mode when it splits into three separate ships.

So technically it's really just 3 ships together two with 2 nacelles and one with 1 nacelle.

I have no problem with ships that have 4 nacelles thats much better than 1 or 3 or 5 which all just look awkward.

I think Gene Roddenberry would agree with me.

    Defiant Class

    VS

    D’deridex-class Romulan warbird

    Arg....finally a hard one.

I think I have to go for the good old D’deridex. When that giant first appeared in front of the Enterprise D, it was clear that the Romulans and TNG in general were not f*cking around. She was a killer, and clearly alien.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Evade

It has to be D’deridex class. The Defiant class is good looking in a scuffed up tomboy sort of way but the D’deridex class belongs on a runway.

Am I taking this starship tinder thing too far?

A lot of the Romulan tech around that era looked good. I think their disruptors are the nicest looking side arms outside of the TOS film phases.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Shoot I'm not sure. This is the first properly hard decision. The Defiant is a great little battleship that looks like something built by a Federation not fúcking around. While the D’deridex arguably the closest to the Bird of Prey for something iconic in its array of alien vessels.

    Gosh I don't know.

I'm going to be the contrarian here, just to stand up for a ship that got its moment on the big screen, but still snarkily maligned by Timer; Defiant for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,049 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Torn also... cruising along the Defiant doesnt look like much at all compared to the warbird.

But in action swooping through blasting away it is shock and awe... so vote goes to the Defiant.

Defiant, a proper, purpose built warship for Starfleet.

The warbird is a kinda silly design with the mass of empty space in the middle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,273 ✭✭✭Rawr

    :O How dare you!

I dunno, I kind of liked the middle gap. Made the design interesting.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Never really thought about it, and I'm sure the canon has derived some explanation, but maybe it's a safety feature; separate the engine as from the command and crew quarters as possible, the gap acting as a spacial barrier in case of emergency - without sacrificing capability.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Evade

Romulan designs, up until the 2009 reboot and STP anyway, seem to always have the nacelles relatively far apart for the size of their ships so I see the D'deridex as the final evolution of that and the all or nothing warship armour concept, ocean going warships obviously can't have massive holes but starships can.

I'm thinking also that it was also a safety feature. Also adding that with a large hole in the middle, there was a good chance that even a good shot might go right though and hit nothing. I kind of assumed that the design was related to the Quantum singularity warp drive that was unique to the Romulans (and forgotten by ST: Discovery...but never mind that).

Miranda, it's a much cleaner design and, keeping with the crass tinder concept, Excelsior looks a bit chubby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

Two titans face off in the first round!

Gotta go Miranda I think, excelsior is a little ungainly in comparison despite being a more capable ship overall.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Given I nominated it ... Miranda. Best ship design after the constitution and maybe even as good depending on the day. Beautiful and sensible at the same time.

I'll leave this open a couple more hours. But jaysus, this game so far has had the most agreement I've ever seen on a boards Star Trek thread. Lol.

Oh it's all fun and games now but wait til the field narrows and the decisions get tighter.

And I'm just saying now, if Miranda doesn't win outright I'm not ruling out abusing my mod privileges and banning the lot of you 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,603 ✭✭✭Mal-Adjusted

Id actually go for the Excelcior. It's a bigger and more intimidating ship. Plus, they say she has transwarp!

I wonder which Starfleet lost more of, lol. Both seem to be easily lost.

Though with the un-killable Rio Grande on it side, I'm voting Danube

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

California Class; neither are anything special but I've never liked the shuttle design of TNG+ - all lumps, shapes and none of the sleek style of the larger craft. Almost looks like greebling, that it might pass as a generic Star Wars design.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,049 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Danube class... nice little runabout. I can imagine they are very popular with retired couples in the after sale market.

Danube Runabout - I like it and they're bigger than they look. And I don't like the California class (despite the beauty pass in 1x9) - the placement of the engineering hull / deflector dish is haphazard, at best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,273 ✭✭✭Rawr

Another hard one. Although I like the California Class, I'm going with Danube. There's something about this little Space Caravan that grew on me over the years. Apparently the Enterprise D had several, but they only ever showed us one.

I kind of hated them in the early DS9 days, as they were a piss-poor alternative for an "actual" starship, but time has made me fonder of them.

Excelsior class for me. So much better looking than the Miranda class. The Miranda class were the workhorse of starfleet.

As for the Defiant v the Deredex for me it would be the Deredex and the reason the cap is in the ship is because that is what Gene Roddenberry said. He said in order for a warb capable Starship to be able to make a stable warp bubble then both nacelles must be able to see each other and they must be an even number of them. That is why all the Enterprises and all the starfleet and Klingon ships had 2 nacelles opposite and inline with each other. Of course all that changed after Gene died which is a pity. Any hard core trekkie should know that otherwise your not a hard-core trekkie. Warp

The Danube for me. I just do not like how the nacelles are on the California class or where the deflector is.

I can't help but wonder if the California Class is supposed to look kind of awkward and thrown together. A sort of juxtaposition to the elegant lines of the usual Hero Ships verses the clunky functional design of the "Second Contact" workhorse of starfleet.

I'm pretty sure the Luna class was supposed to be Starfleets new workhorse ship. I wonder if they fond themselves in another Nick Locarno situation and had to make the California class.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,603 ✭✭✭Mal-Adjusted

California class just because it's a "real" starship

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,063 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

The California Class is removed from the game!

That's an easy one for me. It has to be the Romulan Valdore class it is just so beautiful, so elegant and yet powerful and sleek looking and such a big change from the Deriedex class.

The Vulcan ship is big and powerful but no where near as nice as the Valdore. In fact if its just looks alone of all the ships I think the Valdore is the best looking so you might as well end the game now and just make the Valdore the winner lol.

    Valdore, marginally.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Valdore feels a bit of a knock off of the Bird of Prey, which probably should get it my vote - but it just makes the ship seem lazy while I kinda like the Vulcan craft; gives it a more alien appearance than the actual Vulcans themselves look. So Surrack for me.

    Post edited by pixelburp on

Hmm....no strong feelings either way, but I usually go for the Romulan...so Valdore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,049 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

The Valdore seems out of proportion somehow.

I like the alienness of the Vulcan ship so will vote for that.

The Vulcan ship - memory alpha list it as D'kyr type (no class name) - I like the circular warp nacelle, the fact the nacelle can be moved horizontal when not powered up and the overall knobby look of the vessel.

(Saying that also like the Valdore, and it's a close thing().
