I was amazed with the lack of signage for directions to the course .. Coming from the south of the country go through Knocktopher and out the Stoneyford road .... take a right at the crossroads a mile before Stoneyford .... brings you right to the carpark /course but otherwise very impressed with the set up and course ....smaller crowds take a bit from the atmosphere but on the plus side you get great views of the golf shots ......to be able to watch them hit drivers into the stiff breeze is brilliant!..... Bring a few sandwiches !

Have one ticket available for today if anyone’s looking, person I was going with is sick after getting their second jab yesterday so just heading up myself
Edit: still available unless I say otherwise, leaders will be finishing around 4/5pm this evening

I think the tv coverage of this has been especially poor. Fair enough RTÉ throw it on in the afternoon but Sky would have all the morning action for the Outer Mongolia open but not this one

They usually show the leaders last 18 holes give or take a few minutes and that’s what they are showing. Don’t be thinking of wgc, majors and Rolex tournaments. Normal coverage for European event.

Lowry -5 for the round despite missing two 6ft and an 8ft birdie putts.

A little to late for me. Probably gone out with attitude the hell with this and I’ll attack everything as what’s the difference when starting down that far

Yeah he needed this round yesterday but still good to see regardless of whether he can win.

I second the poor coverage comment. Can't understand why Sky aren't showing the whole day like they would for every other ET event. It's infuriatingly odd.

This is there normal ET coverage in fairness, it usually starts before the leaders go off.

I asked one of the camera men who they were working for. He said they supply global coverage to lots of organizations. I guess they then edit it and add their commentary, decide who they want to show and how much.

Lucas Herbert, from looking like he was going to stroll this, seems to have gone into meltdown mode. Provisional off the 2nd (possibly 3rd?) tee in a row.

No idea how Herbert got through those 3 holes +1

Don't know how Herbet shot under par for the front 9 :D fair play to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,571 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

And a birdie on 10 from the trees. Could easily be 4 or 5 shots worse for the last 5 holes.

Coverage on Rte is awful they’ve missed half the important shots with the timing of the breaks

Commentator as Laporta stands over his second shot to 18:

"If he pars this he's going to Royal St George's, if he birdies it he might win the tournament"

Laporta proceeds to hit a massive pull from the fairway into the penalty area

    Well done commentator!

Well now in all fairness I’m not sure Laporta heard him!

Haha in all seriousness though it was a shame to see for a guy that probably hasn't played many majors and might not get many chances

I missed the shot but judging by where he took the drop it must have been an awful shot. Didn’t really look convincing with iron shots all day, always a big lean.

Herbert finishing strong while all the challengers faded, will be a well deserved win.

Nice piece of Waterford Crystal for the hand luggage :D

Good week for Dale Whitnell after being last man in.

It was really poor alright, straight left

To me it looks like he stands over the ball for way too long

He needs Karlberg to bogey the last now.

Herbert on the cusp of top 50 in the world rankings now, win jumps him from 91st to 55th.

I see the prize fund for the Irish Open is to be doubled by the PGA tour next year as part of the alliance between the Euro/PGA tours. Great news.

The Scottish open will be an official PGA tour event next year which is massive for them, hopefully it might happen to the Irish Open too in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭DuckSlice

The scottish will be a PGA tour sanctioned event, which i don't know would it change much for it? There will still be a PGA tour event on the same weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,018 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Well, a lot of the top guys play it anyway, being the week before the Open, but I'd say it would have a significant impact on guys coming over earlier for a swing of sorts, and if they added the Irish as well it would be huge, especially for us. A western Europe swing, fantastic.

The PGA tour events that they clash with are the "B" events, PGA tour events in name only with none of the top guys. There's going to be 50 spots for European Tour guys in those "B" events. It might set up the unintended and unwanted consequence of some up and coming European Tour players playing in the B comps in the US instead of the Scottish Open though which may require a rethink down the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,729 ✭✭✭Speak Now

The opposite PGA tour event will be co-sanctioned as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,030 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

I'm thinking the top players that are playing the British Open will be more likely to come over for the Scottish if there are FedEx points on offer. Many already do but this should increase that number even further, and I'm assuming there'll be more FedEx points on offer for the Scottish than the US based event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,030 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

On the NLU podcast they mentioned rumours that the Irish Open would move to the week after the British and be co sanctioned also. Not sure how well that'd work for us in terms of strength of field.
