Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Its actually tracked further east than that mainly through wexford

Its reaching me now with so far mainly light rain but big drops and occasional high above us intra cloud rolls of thunder

Yeah, I put a jynx on it. Lightning activity has petered out also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,238 ✭✭✭Oneiric 3

That cannon effect/gun shot sort of low frequency boom thunder always seems to occur more in the morning time for some reason, at least in my observations.

Thunder isn't that frequent here but it has one of most peculiar and unnerving sounds I have ever heard thunder to have. Distant but savage sounding.

Its what we had in the hour long storm here a fortnight ago last Saturday, that was at 7pm

My description was that it was like fighter jets tearing across the sky constantly or an arm of people in the sky shaking sheets of thin

    Really high basically

Could be overhead but several or 10s of kilometres away upwards

2 impressive looking yokes springing up off SW Wales heading NNW

@Kermit.de.frog perhaps you could get out your spectrum analyser...

Plenty of insolation across the SE, South midlands, extending into the MidWest. Temperatures 23c here at present. Some fuel for storms as we approach the midday sun. Bit of a breeze though, so these storms will be moving on through promptly.

Convective - quick up shoots. Assuming the image is not a dud there is already lightning.

The problem with eyeing this is it could be land based convection that has drifted to sea. In this case gone over Cornwall and Devon.

    Hard to know.

I do know the trough moving in to the Irish Sea is potentially explosive. But we have been here many times...

Above any other part of the mainland, the Aran Islands seem to be getting battered as it gets its third wave of thunder and lightning so far this morning.

Would be great to be sitting on the beach in Barna right now listening to those Aran booms.

On the loop, they popped up at sea and met Eireann is recording lightning

They're taking the same route as the effort earlier

The real potential will be toward evening. Ironically we need rays. Once there is a hint of lift by approach to the Wicklow mountains it might kick off but I think we need a bit extra. Heat wouldn't go amiss. We may get that extra energy because i'm seeing blue skies here in north Dub.

Big storm ran up along the coast off Kerry but nothing here near Tralee on the coast, just one shower but nothing recorded.

A few more cloud based strikes recorded by Blitzortung.

Very aggressive sounding thunder out there. Dark but dry.

The thunder in Tuam is something else !

Love the sound of that high based thunder! Pretty weak storm though. Another damning testament of Summer 2021.

Cell popped up just west of Durrow, two claps of thunder, like someone kicking a ball off a metal door

These pop ups spring up out of nowhere Danno and annoyingly, blow away just as quick. But.. fun while they last!

Another view to my south, no signs of much rain (none here) despite radar. 23c

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,238 ✭✭✭Oneiric 3

The high res ECM has better potential for the SE later on this evening as a trough slides in. Could run further north or south of this line but one to keep a side eye on perhaps.

Sweet feck all in cork city right now and it’s muggy as heck and cloudy

Looks like the West could get very active this evening / tonight making for some spectacular lightning shots, and as Oneric shows beginning in the SE and possibly running up along the E and NE coasts well into the dark hours / early Thurs morning reaching the NE. Might have some good chance of Lightning shots along the E coast towards nightfall.

Could have some very heavy rain in the Midlands / N Midlands and parts of the W tonight into Thurs, spot or local flooding potential.

Very odd rumble of thunder here (West Laois), not much in the way of rain at the moment, looks likely to change later though.

Not sure what a 'violent shower' is, but I see Knock had one on the 3pm observations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

All activity seems to have died away in the last hour.

OH was driving between Portlaoise and Abbeyleix around 3.30pm and there was a massive C->G strike that startled her and she pulled over. Unfortunately the dash cam missed it 🙄

Will see how the front interacts over the warm land going into the evening as it pivots back in on itself, some nice cold tops to the cloud, looks to drop most of the rainfall in the W where it will rotate in on itself into tomorrow morning. Some heavy rainfall returns now moving into the W, will we see sparks there soon, should be meeting areas of convergence soon, enough to aid instability ??

Was driving home that way as well Danno at that time and it was a very bright flash with a very loud blast of thunder like a cannon. I really thought there there would have been more to come but that was it unfortunately😔

This must be an interesting event for those who know about these things!

Raining in Cork City after a cloudy day; nothing to report in any interesting way though :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Gaoth Laidir

There were some nice positive strikes in that area around that time, including a 20 kA "Strong Slammer" at 15:34..

Extremely dark in D.24.. clouds look interesting!

No mention of Thunderstorms on any of the TAF's overnight. Hard to see it sparking off now. Lots of mist and murk about overnight.

All the storms have died :(

Big one in the English Channel though.

GFS model predicting 40-50 mm further potential in Galway, Connemara, Westport and Newport areas overnight and into Thursday. Also a local max of around 30 mm in central Kerry.

Years ago when I used to listen to the sea area forecast (back in the 90s ) I recall the forecaster give a 'violent hail shower' report from Belmullet. It was a on one of those mad stormy winter nights we used to get back then! (I'm getting sentimental) Met services do use 'violent shower' on reports if the rain rate exceeds 50mm/h (I think that is the criteria anyway)

I'd say if storms were to pop up overnight they would do so more in and around hillier regions. Cloud base is very low so any orographic uplift will only aid. The air feels completely saturated out there.

The Pembroke -> Rosslare crossing has a shower along it's route, shows up well on the IR Satellite returns.

Dublin radar is down at the moment too, so relying on Shannon + Belfast radar returns for a picture of it's intensity. I wonder will it spark over Wexford as it hits the Blackstairs later?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,537 ✭✭✭typhoony

nice big lump on the radar in the Irish Sea now heading for just north of Arklow town

I see that, its quite a whopper ,looks like mid wexford coast to south Wicklow impact, wonder will it spark?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,537 ✭✭✭typhoony

it could possibly take a turn and head along the east coast we'll know in the next hour

Its 30kms+ in length so it's going to hit a wide area

How much of its precip is reaching the ground is another question

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭pad199207

A dying cell unfortunately. If skies were clearer the flashes over Anglesey would be visible.

Just yet another classic case of anything that stays over Wales and the Irish Sea always lights up and anything that is heading for Ireland just dies.

    I don't think it's dying

    Its just not growing

Cloudbases at Valley and Mona are currently 6000 and 8000 ft, respectively. Forecast soundings are not impressive, only showing meagre MCAPE from around 800 hPa, but cloudtops are down to -56 C, which would indicate that upper forcing is cooling upper levels more than is being shown in the sounding. The northeast could see some action get closer in the next couple of hours before the general low continues eastwards.

Very heavy shower ongoing in south Mayo and more to come !
