Chris Hughton is set to become the next Ghana manager https://twitter.com/_owurakuampofo/status/1489630891467063298

Any Ghanaian Disapora in Ireland will now become prime targets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Would they, and the only player with Ghanaian roots I can think of is James Abankwah. Ghana have experienced lads playing in defence at UK clubs and Jonathan Mensah. Not like they'd be offering a 18yr old LOI player a place in the senior team. Yes he's signed with Udinese but won't be playing with them for a few months and we don't know yet whether he'll go straight into the senior team fighting for his place or spend a year with the U19s.

UK lads will be targeted alright like Callum Hudson-Odoi and they'd probably have a few others there too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 247 ✭✭Perseverance The Second

Ghana will definelty be casting the net very wide.

They are starting a big rebuild and will be making a big push to on-board as many of the diaspora as possible.

If their starting goalie is a fella from an EFL League Two club then you can bet your house that a player signed for Udinese will be a target.

Connolly on now for Boro 👀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Didnt see the game but he was a notable exclusion from the peno takers. Borough took 8 and one of their strikers on the field didnt put his name forward or wasnt selected. Strange.

Disappointing to see Duffy and Doherty on bench again. Duffy hasn't started a game since 4th Dec so looks like he'll need a move in the summer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,644 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Is there a particular reason for that I wonder? Duffy seemed to have forced his way back into the Brighton team, had done well and played a lot in the first half of the season. You'd think when fit he'd be a good signing for amu team in the bottom half of the table especially.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

He picked up a yellow in that game so had one game suspension, then either had Covid or was a close contact, and missed the last three games with an ankle injury.

    Ferguson on for bright

Nice steal from Ronan that led to a goal.

Not convinced he's quite good enough, but given our very mediocre options in midfield, he's making a case.

When you are pulling players from league 1 then players from Scottish football need to be in for consideration

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

We'll be league 2 soon enough for midfielders the way its going. We really do need McCarthy kick statt his celtic career. I know he was injured and is back in contentiin so hopefully he can put a run of games together. Hourihane is playing anyway at least.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 22,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

I don't think McCarthy cares enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,281 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

I'd rather concentrate on younger players for the future rather than McCarthy. Always got a bang of not caring too much about it when it came to international football from him. He's also far too injury prone to be relied upon either way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Kenny was at the game yesterday so Ronan improved his odds more of getting a call up in March. Offers us something different with his style of play compared to others in the AM positions. Could see MK Dons looking at him next season if they don't get promoted. They'll lose Twine and will need to bring in someone technical that could replace him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Would rather bring Whelan back, as always would still offer more than McCarthy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

What makes the goal better is Hibs fans going on about Kenny being at the game and how Jake Doyle Hayes is being watched for the Ireland squad, only for the player Kenny is truly watching to steal the ball from him and bang in the winner. Won't be a game JDH will want to remember, against his former club and Ireland manager in attendance.

Kelleher gets a start in the cup today. McGuinness, Bagan, and Collins start for Cardiff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Kelleher probably bored to death in that first half with Liverpool dominating possession with 82% of the ball. Cardiff sitting in deep defending. McGuinness and Bagan doing alright, and the highlight of Collins first half was probably smacking Virgil.

As the second half starts Kelleher lucky not to be sent off but var is checking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,330 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

    Kelleher very lucky

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Another 90 mins for McGuinness. Looks really good. Get him capped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Would you have Collins ahead of him at the moment? In the upcoming games it'd be good to see a different back 3 of younger centre halfs. We know what Egan and duffy bring. Lenihan isnt getting any younger either.

A back 3 of oshea, mcguinness and dunne would be interesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,330 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

No offense to anyone but we haven’t conceded a goal in 3 games so why the hell would Kenny decide to blood new central defenders? Let’s fix the problems that exist and not create ones.

Kilkenny just given the Bournemouth captain's armband there. He's looked the best of their midfielders so far in the first half, but did make a mistake that Boreham managed to score from

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Thought he'd actually be one to come off at half time, and was surprised he actually took Pearson and Cook off. Woodman could have gotten him into a lot of trouble with that pass if the Borham player made a meal of it rather than try stay up, would have been a red for Kilkenny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Yeah a goal would be brilliant to add to the good form he's been in lately. Probably could have done better for their first goal but done well in setting up the second goal. But that's his style that he's gonna be more playmaker than goal scorer.

Big issue for Parrott over the next few seasons is finding a team whose style of play suits the way he plays.

Conor Coventry is getting good reviews from their fans too. Seems to be growing in confidence with each game. Played a lovely left footed cross field pass out to their winger whose shot they scored from the rebound. Fans hoping they can hold onto him for next season.

Don't know why we're getting involved with this circus with the one stadium we have on offer. England, Wales, and Scotland should have more than enough stadiums to host a tournament even with the possible expansion to 32 teams for this tournament.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,985 ✭✭✭ebbsy

32 teams ??? FFS that is half of Europe ???????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Already have 24 teams qualifying from 54, might as well move it to 32. Won't be surprised to see Uefa and Conmebol to join up further and get involved together for tournaments if the nations league works out for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

I think Parrott has actually been consistently good this season. A lot of people think because he's not scoring on a regular basis that he's performing badly. While his finishing has been admittedly poor, almost every other aspect of his game has been good. It's also encouraging that in a proper ball playing team, he looks very comfortable. For me, he's clearly a better player than he was last season and if the aforementioned finishing can be tightened up a bit, he should be a Championship player next year. He's clearly on an upward curve and able to improve further.

What gives me extra confidence is just how hard he works and the professionalism he shows. Even when things weren't working out for him last year, his head didn't drop. A few of our younger players could probably learn from the example he sets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

People seem to be pouring scorn on the idea, but if we got the Aviva filled for a few games, it surely brings some money in and can help reduce the debt? With a 32 team tournament, we also have the possibility of a high profile competitive game on home soil. It's worth taking a punt on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,330 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

UEFA take all the ticket sale revenue as far as I know. The financial reason to host is because it boosts tourism. This money won’t go to the FAI, it will go to the government and private sector.

Croke Park will need a big redevelopment if there’s any plans to host games there so the GAA get a good boost.

but to be honest it might be just the Aviva since having 2 stadiums in one host city wouldn’t have ever happened in Euros history I’d say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,742 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

Well they might as well cos 24 is a silly number . Only 8 teams get eliminated after group stages . At least with 32 half the teams are out after the group stages .

it Should have been left at 16 teams tho . It was a brilliant competition then but money talks so they increased .

eventually I can see European qualifiers being scrapped and teams qualifying based on nations league .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Uefa won't give nothing to the English fa this soon after what happened with Euro 2020 which was a glorified home tournament for them when only one of their games was outside Wembley.

We're being roped in because everyone loves the Irish and the English fa know they might have a better chance of it not being totally dismissed if they include Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland even though they've no stadiums to hold games. They'd be relying on the GAA to develop Casement to have any hope of a game being hosted there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

This is actually how the underage tournaments were/are due to be to determine qualification. Was suppose to come in two years ago with the U17s coming in next year but pushed it back due to Covid.

They were going to break everybody up into three leagues split over four rounds for the qualifiers. Every league competes in the first two rounds with promotion and relegation. After the first two rounds the teams in League C are eliminated. A and B then play again for a further round and only the teams in League A play in the fourth round to determine which 8 teams play in the tournament finals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

We should run a mile from it. Let the brits do their own dirty work. I think going forward that the model of the Euros being hosted across multiple cities is the way to go. It cuts out all of this BS and in terms of underhanded lobbying etc going on it does away with it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 22,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

I couldn't agree with that. These tournaments are some of the best trips I have been on. Really looking forward to a trip to Germany in 2 years. The city by city approach is not very supporter friendly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

It's a matter of personal opinion I suppose and circumstances. I'm beyond 2 weeks in a camper with a load of lads at the stage!! A nice city break and a game of ball is as good as it gets 😉

Lisbon, Porto and Paris have all had 2 stadiums in the one city for the Euros.

The FAI have had the begging bowl out for the last couple of years to government asking to be bailed out from the Delaney era and Covid. Now they suddenly want to host a tournament?

It's not just a case of we have a stadium, play here. There is a load of costs involved in applying to hosting, smoozing UEFA, marketing, legal etc etc. They'll be asking for government hand outs for it, of which we pay for.

For a sport that has such a massive drop out level from anyone over the age of 16, has done nothing about it, they really do have notions of their importance. People over 18 play football via leisure centres and informal meets, the LOI has functioned in spite of the FAI as opposed to because of it. The development of elite young players is down to local clubs and abroad. They do so little to justify their funding, let along ask for tax payers money to host a tournament.

I would rather the money went on a functioning Olympic program, not the FAI to say "hey, look what we did"

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 22,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

If it could be planned in advance then great. But the reality is that once you leave the groups Irish people have to pay silly money getting flights and accomodation to a city with only a couple of days notice. We are not like the Czechs or Austrians who can just jump on a train or their car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 498 ✭✭Stanley 1

Had it all gone to plan, JD would now be Head of Olympics Committee, courtesy of his mentor and ticketing friend, Pat Hickey, "another fine mess you got me into".

Goal for Ebosele! He's had an unreal game so far, torn the Hull defence to shreds, they have no way of stopping him.

Is Festy playing in a front 3 tonight rather than wing back? I'm only going off the formation listed in a score app

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 775 ✭✭✭RonanG86

Hopefully he'll be in the next squad.

And this isn't "OMG Nigeria will steal him!" either. Considering Coleman's legs are gone, Ebosele has to be at least our 2nd best option at RWB currently.
