Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Score draw I reckon, weird team selection by Southgate, over thinking it I think.

What's up with Sancho and Chilwell? Not on the bench?

Sancho not even in the 23 match-day squad seems very strange, surely he would be a decent option from the bench.
Chilwell & Maguire (injury) seem to be the other two outcasts.
edit. @ poster above, max of 23 allowed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,978 ✭✭✭BenK

That is a dodgy English defense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Excited for this game. Think both sides have impressive attacks and questionable defences. That often means a game with goals.

Surprised by some of Southgate's selections I must say. I'll go for England to edge it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,326 ✭✭✭el Fenomeno

    max of 23 allowed.

    But 2 goalkeepers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Chilwell seems to be injured, Andrew I guess Shaw must be lacking fitness or something? But even then you still have Saka as someone who naturally plays fullback. Trippier just a really weird call.

    Typical cautious approach from Southgate.

Dodgy central midfield too, ultra negative.

This looks like being a bore draw.

Lots of "football's coming home" rubbish in the lead up to the match. One of the few times I might stick with RTE!

That is probably as per the rules (I'm not 100%).

Remember the norm in these competitions is a squad of 23 with everyone named on the bench, so there would always be 2 keepers on the bench.
UEFA expanded to squad of 26 on request of the teams, but the rule of the 3 keepers being in the 23 named on the day is probably still there (I'm not going to check this !)

Yeah, with 2 keepers and 2 CBs on the bench, it definitely looks a conscious choice not to name Sancho, unless he’s injured?

Yeah, my feeling too. He does approach things with an abundance of caution.

Yeah the leg stretching one, that team had great momentum.

I ended up going to Russia v Italy by chance that year in Anfield. There was a real buzz in England during that tournament.

Will home comforts help England today? In theory it should.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

If Sancho is not injured the English media will have plenty to attack him with if he does not get a win today.

Southgate may be too worried about Modric.

Still plenty in attack though for England. Will be interesting to see how Sterling performs given his form.

I think as it’s a case of being the first game of the tournament, not losing is more important than winning.

Game needs Croatia to score early to create a bit of excitement

Seems a pretty unbalanced line up. Shaw/Chilwell not starting ahead of Trippier is very odd. Will be very interesting to see how they perform in their first match all the same.

Bit silly letting them name 26 players in squad but only letting 23 be in match day squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,967 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I think Grealish should be starting, no real creativity in the three behind Kane, they are all pretty direct players. I don't think I'd have Sterling there.

Yeah, if there's no injuries, it forces a coach to exclude just three players. Does seem particularly unnecessary.

Did Liam call Kramaric "the new kid on the scene"?

    He'll be 30 on Friday!

    Woah there.

You love Liverpool. But the English are dumb.

Let's think about this for a second...

Said England not the English. Clearly a reference to Southgate being so dumb. But if you need it spelt out to ya...

    Is Chilwell injured?

Tyrone Mings and Stones are a big weakness, especially with Pickford behind them. An accident waiting to happen for England

The rule state that a maximum of 12 subs are allowed. Whilst you can change tournament rules re squad size, to change Subs would meaning changing the rules worldwide.

Used to play for Leicester as well

    Trippier at left back
Mings - total liability, nasty player
Phillips - limited player, two holding midfielders?
    Sterling - terrible this season

Southgate setting up way too cautious, hope it comes back to bite him. Sancho not even on the bench

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,225 ✭✭✭marklazarcovic

Maybe he ain't happy with Sancho organising his utd move whilst there.

Trippier starting instead of Shaw is very odd

Should easily take care of this Croatian team with that lineup.

Not starting an actually left back is criminal especially when Foden will drift in, Where will the width come from
