Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Looks like full stadiums for the start of the season.
The Premier League, which is expected to be told it can fill stadiums to capacity when the season starts in August, has been a key backer of the scheme and hopes to be able to implement Covid status checks as a back-up plan if seasonal pressures lead to calls for more restrictions.

The new season must be close to a start as once again a Newcastle takeover is back in the headlines.

Amanda Staveley has written an open letter to the UK Government
"A closely guarded lack of transparency from those responsible for the regulation of football does not generally promote good governance.

“In particular the use of arbitration to resolve disputes within football raises an effective shield against public scrutiny – and one might justifiably ask why that model is so favoured by those responsible for regulating the sport if they have nothing to hide.

“You may have seen NUFC’s press announcement from Thursday. Fans surely deserve absolute transparency from the regulators across all their processes – to best ensure that they act responsibly. They are performing a function like that of a government regulator – but without the same systems for accountability.

“This is very much a chance for those to be involved to be seen to take a robust stance – just as the Government so decisively and effectively stepped into the European Super League debacle. But there is real urgency – given the NUFC arbitration hearing is due to take place this month.

“We need intervention immediately to force the issue out into the open. It is my view that it is likely that that would be enough to make those involved behave more responsibly and signal the Government’s intention to take effective action in the interests of the country.

I seen a Sky Sport headline on there twitter it read " is Pogba ready to become United main Man "

Just me or is it absolute madness that the same headline is written every summer for the last 5 seasons.
I find it mad that people can't just accept he will absolutely brilliant on his day but that day wont happen that frequently,

After 5 full season's he is what he is ,

Gary Lineker is the highest earner at the BBC for the 3rd year running on £1.36m which is down from the £1.75m he got last year.

Alan Shearer is the the 9th highest £390k

I wonder how long Kane's strike will last for?

Also if Grealish had declared for Ireland I doubt City would be offering a £100m for him the English tax is on that bid for sure.

VAR and handball changes for the season.

Players will be given the benefit of the doubt this season as goals won't be ruled out for offside due to toenails and noses, Premier League referee chief Mike Riley has said.

After coming under heavy criticism over the last two seasons, the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) are to introduce subtle changes to an official's use of VAR this campaign

The dreaded lines used to work out marginal offside decisions are now being made thicker in order to give the advantage back to the attacking side.

According to Riley, the move away from 'forensic scrutiny' will eradicate goals being ruled out when a player's toe or nose was in an offside position and see around 20 goals more scored throughout the season.

"Fundamentally, we want the approach to be one that allows players to go out and express themselves and let the game flow," Riley said.

"It means the VAR teams will not intervene for trivial offences and the threshold for referee and VAR intervention will be slightly higher than it was last season.

"We've introduced the benefit of the doubt for the attacking player so where we have a really close offside situation, we will follow the same process as last year but now apply thicker broadcast lines.

"Effectively what we have done is given back 20 goals to the game that were deemed offside last season by using quite forensic scrutiny.

"So it's the toenails, the noses of players that were offside - they won't be offside now."

There were a raft of other decisions where goals did not stand due to players' armpits being offside, but FIFA has now stated the armpit is the part of the body where offsides will be measured from.

There will also be a tweak in the approach toward penalties after a record high of 125 were awarded last season.

This season, the referee should not only establish whether there is clear contact but whether it had enough of a consequence in order to award a penalty and whether the player used the contact to try to win a foul or a penalty.

"It's not sufficient to just say there was contact," Riley added. "Contact on its own is only one element the referee should look for.

"If you have clear contact, that has a consequence, it's a foul but if you have any doubts, in these elements they are unlikely to be penalised.

"You also want it to be a proper foul and not the slightest contact that someone has used to go over to get a penalty."

There is also a change in the much-maligned handball rules, which will now see goals that had an accidental handball by a team-mate in the build-up stand.

Furthermore, in the first two years of VAR, viewers not in the stadium were able to see the working out process and it led to screenshots of borderline decisions being shared and creating more negativity for the decision-review system.

As a result, all decisions will be made off-screen from now on.

I just saw the Charity Shield is on now and I'll be completely honest I hadn't a clue it was on this weekend.

So that's 21/22 season officially started so.

Nine subs can be named on a bench this season up from seven. City and Chelsea who have two full first teams will get a huge benefit from this no doubt having a bigger choice of game changers on the bench.

Yeah that's not really a great rule change that is fair for everyone at all. Not a fan myself, thought 7 was enough.

Now, if the extra 2 substitutes were players u20 and from the academy, it could have been different.

Will Kane play on Sunday or at least made the match day squad or pull a sicky to try and force his move to City?

He's only returning to training today apparently, so doubt he'll be starting, and maybe not even in the squad.

Brentford have a nice little ground. It will be great to hear the constant engagement at games from the crowd. VAR will surely be used in a better way given the changes. Great for Brentford to be back up after.....74 years!

Great 2nd goal from Brentford, but reeeeally not sure it should’ve stood - seemed like the keeper’s arms were literally held by his side by the Brentford player to stop him going for it…?

I was laughing at the idea of Arsenal signing Ramsdale but maybe he's better than Leno

Arsenal's first home game is going to be a nightmare for the players they had a season without fans booing them and now it's going to be coming back with a bang.

Arsenal TV are going to be out in force outside the stadium again.

Arsenal will get absolutely rinsed in the transfer market regardless of who they try to sign now. Potential sellers will smell the desperation

    Arsenal gonna Arsenal

Absolutely brilliant result for Brentford, delighted for them.

Can't see Arteta lasting the season, just seems clueless.

Great to see the Hey Jude scenes at the end.

What even are Arsenal trying to do these days? Why persist with a manager who’s still proven to be mediocre at best? I used to enjoy Arsenal’s misery in recent years but it’s starting to get a little sad now.

Fair play to Brentford though, one of the more impressive debuts of a promoted club in years. I know it’s just one game, but I’ve seen enough in it to fancy them to survive comfortably.

Arsenal probably gonna end up with 0 points from their first 3 games. Arteta is going to come under serious pressure from their deluded fanbase who still believe they’re a top side.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Arteta sacked come November / December.

Arteta will be the first manager out the door if the next 8-10 games are as bad as that.

They're missing a few players but christ, theyre really poor.

Chelsea were haunted we got shot of that fraud Lampard when we looking into the abyss. Arsenal need to do the same with Arteta.

Arteta should have been sacked last season as Arsenal are on the way to being a mid-table club. Lukaku will be raring to go against White.

Great to see and hear the noise and atmosphere back, Arsenal, awful

They are still a top side though, just lost there way a little bit.

decevt manager and one or two signings and they’d do ok this year. Enough to build off anyway.

I didn’t see them tonight though

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,054 ✭✭✭wanderer100

Well they’re a big club by name and history, but imo they’re not a top side at the moment. They’re a mid table club with a weak squad and a manager who’s taken on a job that’s far too big for him.

How many Arsenal players in that starting 11 today would start for the likes of Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool. The answer is nobody because they’re just not good enough.

Arsenal are no longer a top 6 side IMO.

Theyre not massively off it but buying White and potentially Ramsdale for circa 80m is not going to push them into the top 6 sides.

Arsenal have a great history and a proud, passionate fan base but I doubt you'll find many who would stick with Arteta.

He might fluke a domestic cup but he's nowhere near winning a PL or either of the 2 European trophies.

How are their fans deluded though? Given their resources and fanbase they should be competing for top 4. They are the third biggest club in England all things considered and just because there has been failures at the top doesn't mean they should have to reset their long term expectations.

Arteta is incompetent and aimless and should be hounded out of the place.

Next Man City manager: You lot may all be internationals and have won all the domestic honours there are to win under Pep. But as far as I'm concerned, the first thing you can do for me is to chuck all your medals and all your caps and all your pots and all your pans into the biggest **** dustbin you can find, because you've never won any of them fairly. You've done it all by bloody cheating.

Are they the third biggest club in England anymore though?
