I got through both seasons the night before the finale.

Enjoyed it. Will be watching season 3.

As for Oscar the EP addressed his whereabouts.

Though just completely disappearing seemed strange. Like as soon as they solved the first murder, Mabel finds Bunny, they get arrested, released then Oliver and Mabel split and Mabel meets Alice. So all happened quickly.

Though when that happens I just decide in my head something like how Mabel has met up with him a few times off screen.

I guess that's not a bad get, to have a young up and coming actress like Meryl.

    😁

I assume she'll be playing Meryl Streep.

Streep and Martin had good chemistry in It's Complicated

I'll still watch but I'd struggle to name 2 people I like less than Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd.

Hopefully it'll just be like Sting or Amy Schumer in the previous seasons.

    First two episodes are out.

Episode 1 is pretty good and it appears to be a step up from Series 2 (which I didn't like at all)

    Meryl Streep!

Yeah agreed about Season 2. I had rewatched Season 1 but never went back to 2.

Streep and Rudd are very different to Amy and Cara, both in terms of quality of actor and also the character themselves - both of the new characters are much more developed than last season's celeb characters were.

I really liked the scene with Martin Short and the reviewer in the second episode.

I thought the first twist was good but would have preferred it if the actual dead body was someone else

Yeah hopefully it's a step up, season 2 was poor.

I really enjoyed the 2 episodes so far, I find this series a bit of a tonic for the soul. I don't know if it's the humour, the visuals, the chemistry between the main characters or everything together but there are few shows I look forward to and pay attention to more than this. Having said that, while watching ep 2 I was interrupted with 3 different phone calls so I hope I didn't miss anything important between the pausing and restarting.

Agree that season 2 was never as good as the first, hoping this one will be back to original standards.

Are we all enjoying this season? I feel the last two episodes haven't been quite up to the usual standard, am I just imagining that? I still enjoy and look forward to it, the story line with Charles and Joy feels a bit repetitive from season 1 and there seems to be less focus on the murder investigation. I think the fact that they paired them all off with someone else for the last episode and they had very little screen time together took away from it. Bring them back together! Charles ad Oliver are hilarious together.

For me it's become the show I get to at some point rather than watch on day of release. Last couple of episodes were watched the weekend after and just watched this week's today.

But yeah the murder seems more like the side story this season that they randomly stumble upon clues for.

    Renewed for Season 4

I only started this latest season yesterday and have 5 episodes watched. I do find my mind wandering to other things a lot more than it did during the first 2 seasons. Although that might be because I'm kind of binge watching it as opposed to one a week as I did with the other seasons.

I know they had to change things up a bit after two actual murders in the building, but it feels less cosy than before, like there's too many outside characters getting involved and the main 3 aren't spending as much time together. Maybe that's a deliberate plot point, given Mabel seems to be the only one still 100% invested in the murder element, because she has nothing else going on in her life.

I'm still enjoying it but not as much as before. The theme tune is still great though. Never skip it.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Craig Erwich, who oversees ABC, Freeform and Hulu, confirmed that the New York City-based comedy will relocate to California for at least part of Season 4. And now, our sister site is reporting that Molly Shannon will appear as part of a season-long arc as a “high-powered Los Angeles business woman who finds herself drawn into the world of the investigation in New York.”

Additionally, Meryl Streep will reprise her Season 3 role as Oliver’s girlfriend, Loretta Durkin.

I couldn’t make it through season 2 let alone the rest. This should have been a one and done IMHO. Great premise and fun but I don’t think it worked being stretched out

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,940 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Yeah, I've kind of lost interest at this point. The celeb castings aren't pulling me back in either. The residents in S1 were all more entertaining than Streep, Rudd etc.

It is one of those that will never be as good as the first series but Short and Martin keep me entertained, hopefully they will have more scenes together than they did in S3. I feel like the 3 main characters were very separate in the last series.

I think Eugene Levy will be great on it. I feel like they are overdoing the celebs in it though. Sure we will see - when is it filming?

Eugene Levy will be joining season 4 as a recurring character

Hmmm, I don't think I'll be in a rush to catch it this year.

Watched the S01E01 the other day and found it to be really bad. Is it meant to come across as contrived as it does? It's really atrocious how lame it is. Is it for people who have consumed so much TV shows at this stage, that even crap is seen as something novel? Please someone tell me what's good about that first episode that I must have missed, because for me, all I could see was a ridiculously contrived story, OTT acting from Martin Short vs zero acting from Selena Gomez vs what seemed like an apologetical performance from Steve Martin. I was all set to get stuck into 3 seasons, very disappointed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,924 ✭✭✭squonk

yeah it’s definitely contrived. I could get with that the the first season. I thought it was quite decent. I think as a one season show it would have been great. Adding further seasons just caused the cracks to show inho.

I thought it was announced that this would be the final season. Guess I got mixed up with something else.

It is contrived (and there’s a certain creepiness about Gomez’ character, who seems to have no friends of her own age, hanging out with two men old enough to be her grandfather).

But does all that matter when it’s funny? It’s just daft escapism at the end of the day, don’t expect it to be the next Sopranos or Game of Thrones - it’s just 40 minutes of pure fun an episode with two of the great comic geniuses of the last couple of decades (and Selina Gomez, I guess).

Episode 3 of season 4 is the worst episode they've done. I know the celebrities are meant to be annoying but they were annoying without adding anything. Celebrities being awful versions of themselves needs to be done right and this was horrific. I'm a bit worried for the rest of the season after a fairly weak start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 625 ✭✭✭thereiver

i think its funny but it has a a very well written story ,steve martin is a good dramatic actor ,some episodes are quite violent in parts .Selena gomez is a good actress but her voice sounds strange like a cartoon character.

its a great setting a high class apartment building in new york.its really a comedy drama.

    martin short is brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,441 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Martin Short is by far the best thing about the show.

This latest series is one too many imho. It's losing its appeal. That latest episode, with the stereotypical Irish stuntman, was pretty terrible, and he was so cringeworthy. Not funny at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,272 ✭✭✭Xander10

I'd go further and say the season before this one was one too many

  • Registered Users Posts: 939 ✭✭✭Salvation Tambourine

I think even bringing Paul Rudd back and shoehorning him into such a bad character shows that the show is running out of fumes. The last two episodes especially have kind of bored me.

Paul rudd is a great actor i don,t like his hackneyed irish stuntman character with his dire irish accent .it,s unusual for a hit comedy to have 2 leading actors who are over the age of 70. i,d like if they had a scene with steve and martin sitting around a table with microphones and recording the podcast .Most podcasts are not made by walking around talking into a phone.i think its too early to say if the new season will be as good as the last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,472 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Thought that was a better episode. Moved the mystery along and found the jokes landing better.

The one thing I'm not a fan of is the whole jealousy from Oliver.

  • Registered Users Posts: 939 ✭✭✭Salvation Tambourine

Very much watching this out of habit now. The story of the murder is actually decent it's everything else around it that I'm not bothered with. Maybe it was always this way but the show just feels too American now.

I find I am less engaged in the episodes that have too many people in it, i.e. the ones with the 'other' Mabel, Charles and Oliver or the latest episode which I only half watched and had to rewind a couple of bits because I hadn't been paying full attention. I might rewatch it, see if it was just me but I found there was nearly too much going on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,472 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I keep forgetting it's out until I go to watch Agatha and see it in the Continue Watching list.

This week had its fun moments. Apparently that was all Meryl/Melissa, apart from 1 shot.

Selena broke laughing in one scene, when Bev was going off at the actors. I saw her turn away shaking so thought that's what happened and looking online they said in an interview that that's what happened.

Noted the nurse with the awful Irish accent in the latest episode. it just takes away from the scene.

Genuinely cant fathom why shows cant find genuine ethnic actors for bit parts. Hollywood is full of budding actors from all around the world. They don't all have to be colin farrell or cilian murphy

ive literally no idea WHY she had to be irish??

    did i miss something?

  • Registered Users Posts: 160 ✭✭Isthisthingon?

I've a funny feeling there may be a reason to it, given paul rudds character was also 'Oirish'.

Otherwise its a strange character selection.

  • Subscribers Posts: 42,004 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

i can get the quirk with the paul rudd character, just a bit of absurdism really, and he does do an OK irish accent ( i enjoyed the little emphasis when he pronounces fill-um for film)

but the random nurse in the hospital turning out to be irish just made no sense to the story at all, unless it was some really kack handed way to question the main characters attempt to talk to gubbins

I'm really looking forward to the next series. I think Chevy Chase would be a good choice for a guest role.
