FIAT - first the rear wiper goes because the motor isn't waterproof , then after you should have taken the hint and sold the car on the rest of the electrics fail in cascade.

FIAT, Citroen and VW , central locking or electric door locks fail intermittently so you can't get out of the car. That's the time to remove the relay or fuse and rely on the mechanical locks. Or take the door apart to re solder the dry joints in the door lock sensors. And replace the plastic clips for the windows with metal ones while you're in there.

Saab 9-5 Direct injection cassette failing

Not an expensive DIY repair, but not noticing the symptoms can result in additional engine wear and the turbo might suffer too

Corolla frogeye, headlight rubbers coming off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,718 ✭✭✭johnayo

Modern Hyundai Tuscon and I40 Clutch slave cylinders leaking.

2008-2013 K9K (Renault/Nissan 1.5d) turbo too hose ripping, then blocking the DPF if it has one.

Punto Mk1 and II heater matrix. Big PITA.

Every-single-Ford Rear view mirror fall off.

Fiesta Mk III failure of ratchet mechanism connecting footpedals to clutch/brake

I'll try limit to my own stuff or what I have ready access to, otherwise I'd be here all day writing out anecdotes:

Volvo S60: Top mounts, that f*ckin ETM, exhaust falling to bits, failed door locks

Nissan 300ZX: leaky T-Tops, rubber round the headlights falling off, failing HICAS
Nissan NV200: as Cian Ryan stated already, this rubber pipe
E34 BMW: rusty jack points, fuel lines behind the rear bumper rotting, subframe mounts perishing, wiper clonk

    Peugeot 607: 4HP20 gearbox failure
    Peugeot 406: Rotten sills
Mercedes W202: rust, CDI fuel system failure

    Land Rover FFR: Rotten floorpans
Hyundai Santa Fe: weak clutch, restrictor in the clutch slave
Fiat Panda: broken steering angle sensor
    Kia Magentis: throttle pedal failing
Citroen C4 Picasso: DPF orange service light
Toyota Land Cruiser Colorado: chassis rust, failed fuel filter primer

And lastly for now.... 1.3 multijet timing chain

Rear window washers on all Pre 1990 Citroen's
Citroen Xantia Clutch pedal plastic piece fail

Rotten bodies on W210 E-Class Mercs.

They made some of the strongest engines ever seen and put them in some of the worst bodies ever seen.

    Engines on Mazda diesels
Curious what the issue with those was?

    VW Polo/Seat Ibiza:
    • Wishbone Bushings
    • Sticking idle regulator, causing it to idle at 1100-1200 at random moments
    • Miscalibrated ECU resulting in intermittent limp mode with conflicting error codes

Astra H wing mirror glass seems to fly off at the mildest provocation. I've seen loads going around missing one or both

Curious what the issue with those was?

Timing chain tensioners and the brackets for holding in the injectors cracking. Both leading to engine death.

Clearly not... most of these faults can't be seen from driving around. :)

Mine would be: failing LED DRLs on Hyundai Santa Fe models of a certain vintage. I'm sure they are pretty expensive units to replace.

Early 2000s Japanese cars (Almeras, Micras, Corollas), formerly red, but now almost pink, with fast-flashing indicators and blown bulbs. Probably because very little ever goes obviously wrong with them and they never get serviced.

Well, when the 607 left me stranded after it's gearbox sh*t itself you'd have seen me kicking the car in temper if you were driving by I guess... :o

Astra G wipers parked in odd positions, or intermittent wipe acting strangely. Caused by a piece of copper wearing away in the wiper motor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

Fiat 500 wipers connecting with eachother and getting it on to only then take eachother out and go flying off the windscreen in a fit while it's torrential rain.....oh and I mean fly off the car.

Nissan primera or Almera gearboxes.... Hey what's that sound.... Bang and metallic sounds and boom..... Gearbox head crapped itself only 70k miles.... Ugh...

Ford transit indicators working but so dim a candle blown out would illuminate more....

Similar to the transit but replicate when brakes applied all lights start having a fit this was also a big thing on many a Renault.....
Still see it on fluence a lot.

Mazda 3 useless headlights dim as füķ
Renault Master vans, side doors falling off the rail
    Fiat 500 heater matrix
    Ford Focus killing batteries
Mazda 6 diesel engines pure s***e
Subaru Forester eating fuel ( still a great car )

Rust in most cars pre the 21st century. Lancias and Fiats the stand outs, followed by anything Leyland and a fair chunk of 90's Japanese cars.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Anyone else notice the door rubbers hanging out of a lot from the 2012 shape ford focus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,123 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Alfa 156 with parts of the underbody come loose and hanging down. Not mechanical parts, just part of the protective system. Happened to mine when I had it then I noticed it on nearly every 156 and still do on the rarer occasions I still see them

A lot of newer Hyundai with one led DRL gone.

My neighbours cobble lock driveway is destroyed from their BMW X5 leaking oil. His brother drives one as well and whenever he is over it leaves oil stains as well

  • Registered Users Posts: 423 ✭✭AlfaZen

They leak oil so you know they still have oil in them. its when they stop leaking you should get worried....

Toyota Avensis Mk2 rear light lamp units filling with water.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,421 ✭✭✭ofcork

I must have been lucky had one for 7.5 years never had that issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,884 ✭✭✭passatman86

    Had my own replaced also

I read they used new door straps in 2012

So some early 2012 could have the issue

Noticed a bit of water in the boot of my Avensis today. Out with the rubber bung to drain it all until i get time to look into it further... Possible common avensis fault

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,427 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Leaking around the lights unless the boot rubber is obviously damaged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,884 ✭✭✭passatman86

    My fluence did that.

Some tin foil rammed in the burned out connector pin,and bingo solved.

(I'm not a mechanic, and other remedies not involving kitchen supplies are available)
