One of the investigations is about the pitch invader at Munich carrying the rainbow flag, I don't think the Hungarians were behind this one.

It really hasn’t the only way you’ll truly get at them, at this rate is allow transgender players but then you won’t get the same crowd at women’s matches.

Regardless, it’s not a great idea to provoke the common people into such reactions and with the football arena considered a last refuge it’s a no brainier mate…. no brainer mate… no brainer mate…..

People think that UEFA/FIFA is a sporting organisation which is only obligated to do what is best for the sport it represents. Their ability to represent the game requires a certain amount of neutrality so they can operate in all countries and help the sport thrive as a global game. The decision makers at UEFA likely do genuinely believe in LGBT activism but it doesn't mean the organisation is a tool to enforce that activism on sovereign governments.

The domestic laws of Hungary is not a hill that UEFA should die on.

Lighting up a stadium does not force anything on Hungary. Heck the Hungarian government didn't even have to see the stadium.

Uefa was never particularly dying on this hill regardless of the decision. If they want neutrality they need to come down harder on the political (apparently) abuse hurled out in games. Otherwise they are enabling a vector for that abuse.

Indeed they cant have it both ways.

It's curious that UEFA wouldn't allow Munich to light up the stadium but have no problem with their sponsors using rainbow colours in their advertisements.

Munich don't pay UEFA....UEFA pay Munich for the use of the stadium.

Sponsors on the other hand....they can pretty much do what they want as long as the cheque is big enough.

I still argue the should have just done it anyway, but this is the problem with Germans: they feel like they have to get permission.

That said Germany is due to host the next one, so might have been wary about repercussions.

Can the stadium do it?
I’ve been at the Munich stadium it looks like a giant marshmallow, it’s got a lot of led lights and part of its design is its ability to change colours.

It’s also something they do on an annual basis.

What they are actually saying is that the rainbow flag itself is not political, but using it in a targeted political statement against one member nations policies is. This is actually a consistent position, but good luck getting that across in todays outrage culture.

I mean, if they'd fine it for all games in prude month it world have made sense and uefa works have been in a tough position to trek them to NOT do it for one particular game.

All games or no games, but basicially not only in the game against Hungary as a political protest against that government. I guess then you'd have the contrarians arguing about why only Munich is lit up and not Budapest, Moscow & Baku.

Articles like this certainly don't help the "it's just about equality" argument. When mindsets like this exist in your movement, can you really blame the likes of Hungary for being cautious?
