"show that a mission described by the MoD as an "innocent passage through Ukrainian territorial waters", with guns covered and the ship's helicopter stowed in its hangar, was conducted in the expectation that Russia might respond aggressively."

Looks like a provocation to me,they went looking for trouble and found it,even invited the BBC....could have been worse for them.

I also find it a bit dubious these secret documents were found at a bus stop and handed to the BBC

Is not 'guns covered and helo stowed' a somewhat surprising condition for a warship out looking for trouble? Surely guns uncovered and helo ready might be a little more apropos?

I note also you do not address the legal definition of 'innocent passage' as per maritime law, which I had mentioned is in the article.

So you think the Commander is wrong when he says he suspects the Coastguard ship fired at them? Wouldnt they have defence systems on board to know exactly what was firing at them and where it was coming from?

Yes he hearing something but i don't think the fire is coming from the coastguard ship ,and it's off in the distance too , could on land or naval fire into the sea not in Defender's proximity ,
I'm not saying nothing was fired ,but whatever was fired heard on the BBC video didn't come from the coastguard ship ,shown in the russian propaganda video.

Im not 100% if the defenders could pick up on radar the rotatory cannons shells ,it's possible they could one they were fired , and just as likely they could tell they were flying in the opposite direction to themselves

Another US Arleigh Burke-class destroyer the USS Ross has arrived in to the blacksea port of Odessa today ,as part of the NATO exercise "seabreeze" 2021 currently in its 20th year of being held in the blacksea , several other NATO vessels and countries Will be taking part ,

Multiple Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and their equivalents or better now in the blacksea on NATO duties with 32 vessels to take part ,
russia may need to rethink this situation they got themselves into

Huh? The UK instigated it quite knowingly according to the documents left at a bus stop but sure we all knew that anyway,Russia didn't get itself into anything.

Sure they did. They illegally annexed Crimea and are quickly realising that nobody respects their authority over its waters.

How is a British warship passing 12 miles from Crimea any more provocative than an entire fleet of Russian warships passing within 10 miles of Britain as it headed for Syria via the English channel - which is only 20 miles wide at the Dover choke point and with the south bound navigation lane being closer to the Uk than France?

I don't recall the British claiming to have fired warning shots or to have dropped bombs or any of the other typically childish Russian breast beating.

Russia is still claiming that they "chased" the HMS defender out of the black sea ,
HMS defender is currently in the black sea and hasn't left since she arrived several days ago ....

Looks like they chased away a Dutch navy vessel the next day and interfered with its electronics....wouldn't be the first time that's happened..
