Are they allowed carry that weight there? In Ireland it's around 44 gross including the lorry and trailer

Probably not, I was being very generous in my estimates, basically my argument is that it is utterly impossible to replace sea transport with road/rail transport unless we take every truck in Europe off supermarket and every other type of delivery for 2 months and also try to solve m50 style traffic jams across the 1,500 kilometers to open ports all while a multiplier of x500 times to the cost of transporting grain.

The ports must open or the Middle east and Africa will burn in food riots this year.

I don't think there's anything to link the above video to nuclear weapons ,I think it seems to lean towards a change of tune in Russia and a possible change of leadership,

Not so long ago anyone who tried to say oh this isn't going well for us and shouted down and stopped from speaking .

    This is a big change

Actually it highlights one of the reasons WHY Russia wants Crimea/Azov sea. Holding those ports is Global food security issue giving the holder of the ports an enormous power chip to play.

Interesting release from the Ukrainians claiming to be from a Telegram group of Russian officers. Among the snippets are one local commander who was taken away by the FSB after what may have been a physical fight with his superior following his refusal to take men back into the "meatgrinder".

Very interesting. You can almost feel the discomfort in the studio there. The presenter’s failure, or perhaps simply unwillingness, to acknowledge what the guy was saying about the difficulty of facing an army who are willing to fight to the death is noteworthy.

Almost reminds me of that scene in Godfather II where Michael Corleone describes seeing a Cuban rebel hurl himself into a police car with a grenade rather than be taken alive, and how this makes him think the rebels can win — much to Hyman Roth’s disgust who wants his associates to believe that the government will prevail.

Italian La Stampa writes about hospitalization of Putin, but also about many examinations and consultations that Vladimir Putin underwent at the best Russian doctors. "There is evidence that Putin was rushed to the clinic about a week ago. It was night, he was very sick," writes an Italian daily, citing informants in Russian services.

The prognosis for Putin's health is to be known over the next five days. In addition, journalists have established that the Russian secret services have already prepared special recordings in the event of a prolonged absence of Vladimir Putin. The films are to be broadcast ready, and their aim is to convince the public that the Russian president is still full of strength and energy. The services prepared recordings for 10 days. At that time, Putin is to be unofficially replaced by the secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Patrushev.

India stopped exporting grain because of the heat wave.

There is a heat wave in India, and yes that has effected their harvest but that is not the only reason they have banned export. They have banned exports because there is a heatwave AND the worlds largest exporter of grain has been cut off from most of their own ports.

Technically there is nothing to stop NATO or others escorting Ukrainian freighters out of the Black Sea, Russia has not declared war or declared a blockade of Odessa, Odessa can be reached without entering Russian waters and there is precedent for such interventions. The political will to take such a risk is not there but if food shortages seem a reality, that risk will become one worth taking.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,235 ✭✭✭paul71

That is true, and we yet see that happen, but it still does not get wheat 850km from East Ukraine to Odessa in south west Ukraine. Grain that would normally have gone to Crimea or Maripol. Nor is it likely that 1 port has the capacity to handle the volume.

A lot of posters don't seem to follow this thread, but come on to dump something they found that's already been posted 2, 3 or sometimes ever more times. [End moan]

Up north, the Russians are still lobbing shells onto border villages, presumably from the other side of the border. At what point in time will this no longer be tolerated by the Ukrainians and they have to use their M777s to enforce a no-man's land on the Russian side of the border and keep the Russian artillery out of range?

One of the key tactics employed by the Vietnamese when fighting America. The jungle made evacuations even more difficult and presented secondary opportunities to attack.

This is probably to keep UA forces in the north and prevent them from joining the eastern forces.

Here's the google translate link, Hope it works.

    Some of the text:

No one will meet the Russian army with bread, salt and flowers in Ukraine. It seems that the events in the south-east of Ukraine in 2014 did not teach anyone anything. Then, after all, they also expected that the entire left-bank Ukraine, in a single impulse and in a matter of seconds, would turn into Novorossia. We have already drawn maps, estimated the personnel of future administrations of cities and regions, and developed state flags.

But even the Russian-speaking population of this part of Ukraine (including such cities as Kharkov, Zaporozhye, Dnepropetrovsk, Mariupol) did not support such plans in their vast majority. The project "Novorossiya" was somehow imperceptibly blown away and quietly died.

Sometimes it is asserted in the Russian expert community (by fans of the Douai doctrine) that since the hypothetical military operations in Ukraine will take place under the conditions of complete dominance of Russian aircraft in the air, the war will be extremely short and will end in the shortest possible time.

At the same time, it is somehow forgotten that the armed formations of the Afghan opposition during the conflict of 1979-1989 did not have a single aircraft and not a single combat helicopter. And the war in this country dragged on for as much as 10 years. The Chechen fighters did not have a single aircraft either. And the fight against them lasted for several years and cost the federal forces a lot of blood and casualties.

Now with regard to the assertion that Western countries will not send a single soldier to die for Ukraine.

It should be noted that this is likely to be the case. However, in the event of Russia's invasion, this does not at all rule out massive assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the collective West with a wide variety of weapons and military equipment and bulk deliveries of all kinds of materiel. In this regard, the West has already shown a consolidated position, unprecedented until now, which, it seems, was not predicted in Moscow.

There is no doubt that the United States and the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance will begin a kind of reincarnation of Lend-Lease, modeled after the Second World War, there is no doubt. An influx of volunteers from the West, which can be very numerous, is not ruled out.

In general, there will be no Ukrainian blitzkrieg. The statements of some experts such as “The Russian army will defeat most of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 30-40 minutes”, “Russia is able to defeat Ukraine in 10 minutes in the event of a full-scale war”, “Russia will defeat Ukraine in eight minutes” have no serious grounds.

And finally, the most important thing. An armed conflict with Ukraine is currently fundamentally not in Russia's national interests. Therefore, it is best for some overexcited Russian experts to forget about their hatred fantasies. And in order to prevent further reputational losses, never remember again.

Bloody hell, this guy nailed it pretty much to the letter four months ago. 😮 I doubt he was alone in these notions. How dumb was putin and his minions. Clearly this guy's memo never reached them. Or their hubris was that high.

I have near zero expertise and even I could see from very early on and before we saw how ramshackle many of the Russian forces could be that this was no walk in the park and I couldn't understand why putin was gunning for Kyiv. Like I said back then if he'd "just" invaded the Donbas with his combined forces he would have taken it, at least for a while. Even with heir fcukups they have taken a goodly chunk of it as it is. Invading was moronic and has fcuked Russia, but IMHO his run for Kyiv was his biggest tactical and strategic mistake.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

While I treated his appearance on TV with scepticism as he could've been angling for a ramping up (and he may still be used for that) he was very much on the button and doesn't seem to talk about expansionist plans etc. with any kind of fondness. A military man who doesn't want to fight for the sake of it is a good person to have near power.

If Russia keep downsizing their objectives like this, they may eventually achieve one of them.

Jumping on a belated bandwagon? Important to be on the right side at the close.

Particularly when the USA is a supporter of your state.

Yes, they can and do carry that kind of weight. They use much bigger trailers with more axles, and its not unusual to see a truck pulling two trailers. Nothing like an Australian road train, but in emergency, that would be possible too, I'd say. And in Ukraine, the main roads are good, same as in Russia. Its when you go off the main roads you could meet problems.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,203 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

I'd say a hell of a lot of the higher ups in Russia knew the truth. The problem is that in an authoritarian state, you never tell the boss something he doesn't want to hear.

Although, with the scale of corruption there, and the amount of money that was allocated to the military, that went missing, they might have other reasons for not telling him.

(Edited because I made a really dumb mistake in what I was saying)
