The Putin apologists are frantically trying to come up with ways to blame this on the west somehow.

Putin wants no NATO going east and no missiles near the Russian border.

Has he seen what he put on the border facing Ukraine?

No. No it's not. And he isn't. Not even close. Oh Putin has nukes? He would want to be a madman to release that hell, and he'd need a command line right down to the men who would physically push those buttons to be equally mad. Plus we've been here before and right in the middle of the Cold War. The Soviets had a happy knack of invading other nations and still the missiles didn't fly. Afghanistan being the last of those. And when in 1983 when tensions were high and a glitch caused the Soviet's radars and early warning systems to light up with what looked like an American attack a Russian man, sorry cast iron fúcking hero of humanity, by the name of Stanislav Petrov in the midst of that unbelievable confusion and panic all around him thought no, even though I'm seeing five missiles, that doesn't make sense and defied orders, orders he had written himself fo just such an eventuality, and refused to push the button in retaliation. There was another Russian chap, whose name embarrassingly escapes me, way back during the Cuban missile crisis, when the submarine he was an officer on was being harried by US destroyers and lost contact with Moscow. Other officers were sure WW3 had started and wanted to fire their nuclear torpedoes at the Americans, but he held his nerve and said no.

For a madman to win you need a lot of madmen below him to believe in that madness. That was easier in WW2 because your average person had so little wider information than we do now, but even in WW2 and with scary levels of brainwashing and propaganda quite the number of nazi's below Adolf defied him in the field. Back then before atomic bombs the big fear was poison gas and even when things got really bad neither side, including the nazis used it on the battlefield, and they could.

The gob are defined by being anti democrat. If the democrats were anti war, the gop would be pro war etc. They live for political capital and will pick up the scraps wherever they can. Neither side is ideologically motivated, they are just conduits for votes.

I'm not so sure that would help. It might even rile him up and get more of the Russian people's support. He would spin it as the "west" taking food from their mouths. It's a hard one to solve diplomatically and going militarily would be a disaster. Unless the Americans 'admitting' to seeing UFO's is actually their advanced stuff. And I doubt that. It couldn't even be a proxy war like Vietnam with both sides supporting their guys, any Western military response would be against Russia herself.

I liked the bit on how there is anti-Russian sentiment in Ukraine - gee, I wonder where that comes from?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,515 ✭✭✭brickster69

You have not thought this through very well have you. Swift works both ways. How do you buy gas and oil without SWIFT, just take a truck of gold and meet someone on the Russian border.

Surely, many Ukrainian citizens who hated the Yanukovych regime must be thinking that their country's bid for membership of NATO is not worth the aggro that they are facing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,036 ✭✭✭joseywhales

The problem is, if the situation happens enough times, probability dictates that eventually someone will make the wrong decision.

That was surreal honestly. He went everywhere, 100 years of heavily biased russian history. pulled out his giant book of grudges and laid it all out. He will take all of Ukraine and then start on the others. that speech will go down in history.

Recognising independent (puppet) states inside other sovereign nations is a classic power move. It provides ample pretext for further action including annexation (like Crimea in 2014).
