    Any sign of Brookville lads?

The Club players association CPA was founded to express how they felt marginalised by the structures as they existed back in the day. The split season propsal received overwhelming support from the players ,was sanctioned by Croke park and CPA was disbanded having achieved their aims. The current structure is not perfect but great majority of players voted for it and until they are seen to change their views it will stay.

The 3rd round of group matches are only being played in Tipp this weekend

I like the new system. Players can start coming back around March, get themselves fit for 2/3 months, enjoy the spring/summer and play into the autumn. There are plenty of games from April onwards just without intercounty players.

I think that's often forgotten in the split season debate. The clubs wanted this. Covid pushed it forward, but it was happening anyway.

The blame lies in the inter-county scene, be it managers, pundits, the GPA or journalists. The managers wanted total access to players, we were already seeing some counties not letting players go until their inter-county campaign was done. Pundits and the GPA pushed for more matches, bigger competitions. Journalists went with them, pushed the narrative.

And then the inter-county scene became a behemoth swallowing up everything.

The clubs were being squeezed, and they just wanted to carve out a part of the year so they have access to their players. And they got it, and were happy with that.

Listen, whatever way you look at it, whether county championships start in July or August, in most counties you have (maybe July too) August, September and October to run off both football and hurling who are in competition with each other for players and time. At inter-county level you have January until June (July if you're lucky), that's 6/7 months, where both codes can be run in tandem, bar form the AIQF's onwards (and even that the hurling QF's shares a weekend with the Tailteann Cup).

On top of this, plenty of counties have changed formats of their county championships to adjust to the new reality. The inter-county changes just seem to be about adding games, not cutting your cloth to suit.

If the clubs can make changes to streamline county championships and run things off in half the time with competing codes, then the inter-county scene should have no bother doing the same in twice the time with codes running in tandem.

Ultimately, the split season is as a result of giving the inter-county season what it wants, and the inter-county season not being able to handle it.

Club players now have certainty in January when they will and won't have championship matches so can plan other parts of their lives holidays, family events, possible work related travel etc. Some of the coverage from sections of the media on the topic particularly RTE has been disgraceful the last couple of years.

Why is there so many club players abroad at the moment its unreal.

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 neverbet

Agree with you fully. It limits their media exposure time and probably earnings. Club players make up 97% of the playing population and deserve at least the 5 months set aside for club competitions. The high profile ex players and Gaa media in general need to get their heads out of the sand and realise Gaa season does not begin in January and end in July.

    Various reasons.

To be honest, I don't blame a lot of young lads leaving the country because the way things are here, getting a house is next to impossible. Doing a few months of work abroad might earn you a few bob for down the line for when you do come home.

I don't think it hasn't been noticed that those involved in the running of GAA clubs are starting to look older too. The GAA isn't the same draw it was back in the day for younger people.

Then there's demands. Even intermediate club is a serious demand on a lad. I see local lads playing soccer, train or go to the astroturf two times a week for an hour, out on a Friday/Saturday night, match on Sunday. Lads play hurling, eating properly, training 3/4 days a week, not going out when there's games on. If you're a young lads, one certainly has more appeal if you like having a social life.

A lot of the reason for the extra training is money . The more you train the more money the coaches get and of course the manager

Well I'm the USA and the national championships were last weekend. I know our club had a good few young lads on J1s who are all heading home now this week and next (with a junior A championship medal in their back pockets, I might add, hon the cusacks). Our lads mostly worked construction for the summer and had a great time doing it, but I know there were a lot of senior players over in places like Boston and San Francisco and I can definitely see the attraction of playing senior over here, prob making a few bob just to hurl. Look at Colin fennelly and Joey Holden a couple of years ago. In football there's even more opportunities and money floating around in America.

That kind of thing is a big attraction for young players especially, so you can expect a bit of a delay for some clubs getting up to full strength for championship at home. But the serious stuff over here is done now for the year.

Even the Kilkenny senior teams lose players now. This was unheard of 10 years ago. The only players we cant get rid of are the older players, loads of younger lads give it a year or 2 and leave it at that. If Richie Leahy got a bit of form and confidence at Intercounty level he would be a quality plyer but he has emigrated to Australia. The world is a much smaller place these days and unless you are born into money or reasonably sensible in your 20s it is very hard to buy or build in Ireland at the minute.

Camogie Association have forbidden the use of Veo cams for the purpose of recording matches for Juvenile matches, and any SENIOR matches that have juvenile panel members….

    Utter madness!! 😣 🤐

Kilkenny county board also 'banning' photography of juvenile players in 'action shots' ….. unless by a 'official photographer' ??????

Great job promoting the game lads……

    Wokeness. Camogie is killing itself.

It’s not just Camogie Association - It’s the GAA too

The rule makes sense. VEO own the footage when you record and upload to it. When minors are involved it’s messy

They Camogie Assc also mentioned "no conventional recordings" - that has nothing to do with ownership of the footage?
Is it a worldwide thing then ?

Or just Irelands culture to object to 'things' ??
Or is this due to Clubber showing lots of club games? ( there are lads 'out there' that will record the match on Clubber, and for a fee, will do the analysis of the game for you)…

The FAI havent banned the use of Veo's.

Bridge and village tomorrow that could see the village in bother.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,570 ✭✭✭✭greenspurs

    The last paragraph.

I have contacted Croke Pk, and the 'guidelines' they sent me were not as draconian and a definitive as the above !!!

So … Make of that what you will….

A lot of Veo cams on DoneDeal soon …

Village v Bridge, saw a big improvement in the village against the boro the last day. Starting team seemed stronger with more of the young lads starting. Bridge were dominated by ttown for long periods and were 9 down mid way through second half but did go on a scoring blitz. Expect the bridge to improve and get a win leaving village winless and vulnerable but can't see them going down either.

Glenmore v Dicksboro Hard to see Glenmore scoring enough or holding the boro sufficiently to win this. Glenmore will be hopeful to start working towards full strength as they have been a few short every game so far. Rumours of additions from a Waterford club might help. Boro will look to step it up but winning league not their priority either way. Boro to win comfortably

Tullaroan v Thomastown Very hard one to call, Tullaroan have looked very good in the forward department but have leaked a few goal chances. Tommy Walsh back in at full will help. Thomastown looked very good against the bridge and are on crest of a wave, important thing would be how they respond to a defeat. Injuries to Jay Burke and Tucker Hanrahan probably swing this in Tullaroans favour.

Loughlins v Erins Owen favorites to win versus favourites for the drop, can only see Loughlins win here

Shamrocks V Clara Expecting the real Shamrocks to start appearing from here, strongest team so far will probably start, they are probably happy where they are. All is not lost for Clara they are showing good fight and doggedness so far, if Rory Glynn comes back they will improve hut Shamrocks to win this.

Ballycallan V Mullinavat Ballycallan have been moving nicely even without Billy Ryan.Tommy Ronan has been excellent centre forward, really puts himself about for a small man. Hard to get a read on where Mullinavat are, they are driving plenty of wides. As always Vegas will be hard to beat but expect GBC to edge this.

Ya that second paragraph is a joke for sure

It would hinder the progression of the sport if it’s scaled back like that

    B/Bridge v James Stephens

    Glenmore v Dicksboro

    Tullaroan v Thomastown

    GBC v Mullinavat

4 of these games could go anyway. Glenmore seem to have a stronger line up than the first 2 game weeks

I'd agree, I have a sneaking feeling for the Village and Vegas for some reason. Think Boro and Thomastown will win other 2. Shamrocks and Loughs to win comfortably
