just thinking; does there seem to be a swell of british born musicians with irish backgrounds in the late 70s/early 80s?
john lydon, morrissey, elvis costello and shane mcgowan spring to mind easily.

Morrissey: All of the other 3 members of The Smiths as well: Johnny Marr (real name Maher), Andy O'Rourke and Patrick Joyce.

Shane McGowan: Almost all of the rest of the Pogues as well. Bassist Cait O'Riordan was married to fellow Irish-Brit Elvis Costello! In fact, some of the Pogues were actually born and bred in Ireland!

    Not by himself he's not.

Kevin Rowland has written some fine songs for Dexys Midnight Runners in his time and they also did a very good cover of Van Morrison's Jackie Wilson Says. He is a good performer. It's a pity he had to muddy the waters with that overrated, overplayed (at every social function), irritatingly catchy and extremely annoying Come On Eileen.

It's not his fault the song was so popular. A really bizarre opinion to say it's a pity he wrote a song that was then over played... by not him.

Also 100% disagree. Listen to Eileen in context as a closer to the album and it's perfect.

Think KR was born in the UK but lived in Ireland when he was young for a few years.

Terry Woods and Philip (Ryan) Chevron were born in Ireland.

Shane's parents are/were Tipp and Dublin.

Other than Cait , all the rest are English with an odd Irish ancestor back there somewhere.

I love Kevin, but truth about Come on Eileen is he nicked it from former Dexys guitarist Kevin Archer who went on to form the Blue Ox Babes. Rowland also nicked Helen O'Hara from Archer but at least made some reparations by giving him a writing credit on the song.

The best DMR album is probably Don't Stand Me Down, a criminally underappreciated record.

I'd say Rowland was a nightmare to work with tbh. I like his recent interviews because he's usually bracingly honest and funny about how big a tw*t he could be and just taking stuff wayyy too seriously in general. He's lightened up now and last couple of albums were decent, be nice to get something new soon.

met him in a cafe in rathmines many moons back, he was having a quiet coffee in the corner and lets just say he wasn't too pleased i recognised him 😑

Maybe you were distracting him from his quest to locate the spirit of Brendan Behan?

It was quite a reinvention from the soul sounding brass and horns of Searching for the Young Soul Rebels to the strings of Too Rye Ay and it’s Celtic Folk sound The Waterboys also tapped into this with Fisherman’s Blues.

Liars A to E from Too Rye Ay is one of my favourite tunes.

Great news. Deciding which of those dates to book a ticket.

Also, intriguing to hear Too Rye Ay "as it might have sounded." Don't know if that's just already circulating demos or new unheard stuff. Can't wait for it.

Just had an email tour cancelled

It is with huge regret that Dexys have had to cancel the "Too Rye Ay as it should have sounded” UK Tour planned for September and October 2022. Please read the full statement from the band below.

"As many people familiar with Dexys will understand, a lot of work and detail was planned for these shows. Unfortunately, Kevin is recovering from a motorbike accident and some health issues that will take some time to recover from. We had tried to keep the tour on track right up to this week, but now it is clear that that there won’t be sufficient time to do the work needed to deliver the show as we had envisaged.

Dexys feel awful about cancelling and are immensely sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Apologies first and foremost to the fans who have bought tickets and already made travel arrangements, and to the team, promoters, staff, agents, the ticket vendors, venues and all who have worked so hard.

We did consider postponing the tour until next year, but we already have plans for 2023, and we promise that when we next tour, and, it won’t be long, we will do plenty of material from ‘Too Rye Ay as it should have sounded’.

‘Too Rye Ay as it should have sounded’ The Album will still be released in September 2022."

I have come across that name occasionally in Ireland, but it is an English name. Both of Kevin's parents were Irish as it happens.

Same had tickets for UK show too and disappointed but at least he's alive.

No to get a refund for the tickets.
