Donnelly on RTE Radio 1 earlier confirmed NPHET are in charge of national policy. He said cabinet will go with NPHET recommendations because they are the experts. Dobbo did challenge him on the projections and Donnelly just repeated the line that NPHET are the experts and that's that. Tony and NPHET are firmly in control of the country at this point and it's pretty much undeniable.

Well isn’t that preferable to politicians “winging it” and just guessing what needs to be done?

    NPHET are public health experts

    The politicians are not.

Apparently Micheál is going to be live on RTÉ momentarily so we shall see if he is subject a proper cross-examination or the polite and totally non-adversarial examination-in-chief we have come to expect from their presenters throughout the pandemic.

To congratulate the English team perhaps

You may be correct. Its that time of the year when the media generally have fek all to report about. Now they're nearly finished making up click bait headlines - they're moving on to the next easy target ...

No I expect elected officials to question and challenge what they are being presented with before making massive decisions. Not act as a rubber stamping exercise for what is supposed to be only an advisory group.

Just watching George Lee on RTÉ, when did he become a NPHet cheerleader? Realistically pubs and restaurants can write off opening this summer, it’s obvious Tony H is in charge. Government should be honest and say there’s no point in pretending it’s only a couple of weeks, it’ll be next year

Finally some TD's have found a bloody backbone...

If that's the strength of the "opposition" we're in worse trouble than we thought!

Usless Alan Kelly and "Bat sh*t Crazy" Healy-Rae, MMartin just laughs at them..

The Government now have to decide if it's "Vaccinated only" or keep the Hospitality industry closed into September which will be the end of most of them without more state borrowing to prop them up and pile it all onto the national debt..

Are you not reading the posts or something? The politicians job is to take account of the social, economic and other health implications of their decisions. Not just rubber stamp the narrow view of one group and to hell with every other consideration. Do you not understand this?

    .

Experts predicting 2,000 could die by August, its scaremonging not rational advice . and the Irish public lap it up, whilst the rest of Europe and America open up, and live with the virus whilst the most vulbnerable are vaccinated.

You are naive if you don’t think the cabinet scrutinised the nphet report

They said they took what NPHET told them. Martin literally said that in his speech earlier. Are they lying now also?

We are at a critical stage in the fight against the virus.

Even the "optimistic" numbers in the NPHET model need serious scrutiny. 250 deaths and 80k+ cases in the next couple of months is the best case scenario.

I'm sure they scrutinized it like all the rest of us after they rubber stamped it.

Mind boggling that there has been no consideration of antigen tests. Granted they're not perfect but they would provide an extra layer of protection in addition to continuing vaccinations while allowing people and businesses to get back to a reasonable level of normality.
