Its more like four times bitten fifth time shy.

Are anti-anti-restrictions posters capable of learning from experience at all?

The re-openings are always planned months in advance, then they either do or don't go ahead (but never fully).

Are the exact same posters who mocked everyone on 31st August 2021 for being sceptical of an October 22nd opening now going to mock other posters on 19th January 2022 for being sceptical of a March 31st reopening?

Yeah fair enough. Maybe I'm getting a bit lost in it all. As I feel now "we" are not really trying to stamp out transmission all that much... and if we are its transmitting anyway and things seem OK... sort of OK? So let's keep pushing that way imo.

But we don’t need to stamp out transmission. Omicron is a mild cold and hospitals are not being overwhelmed.

Why make people pay for tests before travelling and the inconvenience it causes?

  • Registered Users Posts: 596 ✭✭✭deholleboom

Certs for international travel will i think remain in place. One could make a good case of abolishing them for the highly vaccinated EU countries and create or keep some sort of high risk scheme with different rules for low vaccinated countries and make those travellers do a test. My feeling is that EU countries will keep the cert as there will be little push back and we are all accustomed to it. That doesnt mean it is right. It will be required when checking in online or at the airport desk together with your ID. Very easy and fast. I wish that, once this emergency is over someone would bring a case to the european court of justice challenging the certs use. The thing is, once it has been established that those certs have been implemented to protect public health, as they clearly have, your basic individual human rights will be sacrified. It is always a trade off with human rights.

weird that people don't get that.

it's like they believe in zero covid or that its a possibility

I completely understand this stand point, if Covid was a deadly killer, but its not, to the vast majority, we don't test for any other diseases before entering a country, I cant fathom, the need for this, unless we were to actually health screen everyone entering a country..

I have traveled to Africa multiple time's to multiple countries, HIV is rampant there, I was never tested for HIV coming back home, infact I have travelled all over the world and I have never been tested for anything... maybe you can say HIV doesn't over run the hospitals, but at this stage neither does covid, its just an example of a disease that can be imported and can kill people.

I just dont see why we need to test for Covid, its not taking over ICUs anymore..its time to let go

If they did that here, they'd kill off both the tourism industry, and the vaccine uptake rates.

Myself and others I know only got vaccinated for travel, if they insist on testing me, even when vaccinated, I'll not get any more jabs if there's no benefit / carrot.

And as for travel, the Belfast airports are a few hours up the road. A bit more ballache, but possibly easier travel.

  • Registered Users Posts: 596 ✭✭✭deholleboom

Unless of course if they need both a cert AND a test. A valid cert with booster. I wonder at what time they will let that stick drop. I, like many others have not taken a booster shot. DCC no longer valid 9 months after last jab. My guess would be early june. Until then they will try to get as many boosters in as possible. They will drop the tests first as they cost serious money for a family travelling. However, flight companies will be directed by governments who will have less qualms/responsibilities upholding them. France first and foremost.Macron heading the way..

So you want that as an ongoing tool ?

Should we be testing people coming in this summer ?

    How about next Christmas ?

    Summer 2023 ? 2024 ? etc ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 596 ✭✭✭deholleboom

The term 'stamping out transmission' says a lot. If you follow that line of reasoning everybody should tested everywhere, anytime for anything. The idea that testing before flights will actually achieve something on its own is simply wrong. But it shows a mindset. One that actually will keep certain rules in place. We are still at times asked to take our shoes off in airports. How long ago was that?

Please correct me if I’m wrong here but my understanding of viruses is that they start out strong but with every new variation they become more transmissible but less deadly. The thinking being that if they keep killing their hosts there will be less hosts to infect and less chances of infecting others. After all they simply just want to be. Am I wrong? The reason I ask is because Ciara Kelly on Newstalk this morning said we need to open up now before a new more deadly variant comes along. If my understanding of viruses is correct then surely a more deadly variant at this stage would be unprecedented. So why the fcuk are these people constantly talking about more deadly variants? And she’s a doctor lest we forget.

You cannot stamp out transmission of the virus - its impossible. Like pissing against the wind.

All you can do is protect yourself, but you have to accept that the virus will spread. 100% vaccination isnt enough to stop the spread of the virus, so unless something drastically changes covid will be endemic and with us for decades. Time to get on with life

I took her point to be that they are yet again being cautious in case a new variant comes along...

...when actually if that is a possibility then they should be reopening now while they can.

And she is right, the abundance of caution, stay locked down to prevent lockdown, go slow so that we don't go back model has proven to be an utter failure.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,876 ✭✭✭bokale

Ciara Kelly is trying to stir up people to make money. Same thing she does everyday. If you have control over the radio my advice would be to turn newstalk off altogether.

Delta was more deadly than the previous strains so I don't think there is a guarantee any new strain will be less severe

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭growleaves

Alan Kelly said today we may need another shutdown later in the year.

I'm guessing when a new variant comes along they will do what they did with Omicron, restrict things until they have more information.

Because any variant *might* be very bad. No one can tell the future so....

This explains why Martin and Varadkar have mused about years of restrictions recently. Varadkar mentioned mid-decade as a possibility for end of restrictions.

    Don't shoot the messenger please.

Say something you don't agree with, "Oh you're projecting" despite the fact Government ministers and members of NPHET have said for years that they would like to change the socialising culture of the country...

Yeah, "I'm projecting" Get lost, pal. I ain't engaging in such shite. You abide by restrictions, well done you. Do you want a medal? Some of us have been severely affected by these restrictions. Think before you speak!

England to end plan b measures from 26th January

    - end of work from home guidance

    - end of mandatory facemasks in public places

    If not why not !

That is the question countries have to start asking now.

Also looking to bring forward the repealing of legal powers earlier, which is the big one for me. No more ****ing legal power to bring them in when ever they feel like it.

Even with their highly idiotic leaders, they are still able to conjure a response that is far more rational than ours.

No longer in the EU.. making more rationale decisions... Locked out of the EU countries more consistently (red status)... Hmmm it's almost like there's a correlation there.

you mean we could actually not have this thing over us forever? im afraid to believe it.

Im so tired of the Government acting like covid is only transmissible in pubs and restaurants. At this stage that narrative is an insult to our intelligence.

I think Leo is fed up with state sponsored bullying of the hospitality and wants Government stripped of their Nazi powers.

I'm amazed to see this over and over again.

Not having a go at you but even the acceptance of it as justification for anything is contradictory.

We cannot 'stamp out transmission' of covid. All the experts agree on this. We never could even when it wasn't everywhere. Now its definitely everywhere and its going to stay everywhere too.

Therefore vaccine passport for travel 'to stamp out transmission' makes no sense whatsoever.

Anyone who wants to hang onto certs wants them for a different reason. And I dont mean you, I mean Ms von der Leyen for example.

That's a very long post in response to something that wasn't said. I've freely admitted when I've been wrong in the past.

Just wondering again...all those posters that were certain back in November and December that we were going into lockdown and that schools were going to be closed before or after Christmas going to admit they were wrong?

Interesting that all the good news from the last few days has been from the co-teesh and not the main man himself, isn't it?
