    Oh yes the guy in the wheelchair was the most responsible therefore he deserved the smacks to the head with the baton.

    Again, where are these great prisons?

    The Italian scenario is an aberration. It’s also not being tolerated in Italy. 52 prison guards have been arrested and are facing hefty charges. It’s triggered a huge investigation.

    I would be more concerned if the response was to accept it as normal. The conditions and brutality of some US prison systems is completely acceptable there, for example.

    The majority of European prisons meet pretty high standards and if you look at somewhere like the Nordic region, most of them are extremely humane and focused in rehabilitating and preventing recidivism, and are seemingly very successful at that too.

    There isn’t one model across the entire EU though. There’s no federal layer of criminal justice in Europe. It’s just an overarching set of agreements of minimum standards and they’re clearly breached in that incident and so is Italian law.
