Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Pete "Nakarawa" O'Mahony with the offload assist for Stu's try.

Would prefer moves not to start with our 10 lawn-darting himself into an oncoming player's abdomen, but nice move after that.

Twice so far in the first half Dillane has spilled the restart, which immediately led to a penalty.

Rusty as we've been, Japan are probably my new favourite (not Ireland) team. It's like playing against a team of Shane Williamses.

After an absolute belter of a try for Japan, Pete "Pocock" O'Mahony gets us straight back in the game with the jackal.

There is nothing this man can't do. And yet he is still the angriest human alive.

    Imagine if he had shortcomings?

This is like that drunken USA-Ireland thread all over again, but condensed and with more understanding of the laws.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

    marginally better understanding...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

My understanding is being greatly assisted by Japanese TV putting in these little cartoons to explain the penalties:

    557532.png

Translates to: "Forbidden to put off the opposition with the YMCA dance during lineouts"

Another class try by Japan, the little grubber back inside by the 10 from the wing, catching three defenders off guard and their 11 latches on for the finish.

Their invention is a joy to behold.

Their try on 57 mins was another thing of beauty. The 3 lads stalling ahead of play after Joeys fairly aimless kick, expecting the returning wing to break a tackle, creating a 4-on-1, which they finished with fairly humiliating efficiency.

Lineout malfunctioning? Throw it to Pete "Rodman" O'Mahony. Instantly fixed.

    Bitter-sweet moment.

    Coombes in.

    POM out.

    Baird's pace is absurd.

Baird just made a step that James Harden would envy. Surely he's in ahead of Dillane next week?

Game kind of fizzled out in the second half. Weird one, in that we scored nearly 40 points, but it doesn't feel that our attacking play merited this. Obviously a lot of rust, which has hopefully been shaken off, and would be nice if we another decent team to play next, as I can't imagine the USA will offer much of a test. Hopefully we see more of Baird and Coombes anyway. I'd go Hume in for Farrell if the latter is out, and give Carbery another shot at 10; we saw very little of him once he was moved to centre.

One of those games where you'd have to consider a player on the losing team for MOTM, maybe their 10?

Japan scores tries of a calibre that I can't remember the last time we did. Their fluency with the ball and ability to construct line breaks is a thing of beauty.

The lions vs lions match is starting shortly I presume, but Kilkenny vs Wexford could be a great game, and then the soccer later where the world is hoping the Ukraine beat engerland. Enjoy.

    For context we were without:

Tadhg Furlong, Cian Healy, Johnny Sexton, Gary Ringrose, Iain Henderson, Keith Earls, Robbie Henshaw, Conor Murray, Andrew Porter, Bundee Aki and Tadhg Beirne

We had a mixed bag of a game but this was out first game of the summer tour, Japan were on their 2nd so of course they were going to gel better than us. Added to that we have a few players away with the Lions and a few more rested so we end up with a mixed bag of a team too, trying new combos and a few players who have very little rugby played this season.

I was as annoyed as anyone with our basic errors but you'll get that when it's your first match together.

Our defence was narrow and that allowed Japan run at us and get some nice tries but we really shouldn't have been kicking ball back to them when running ball back at you is their strength.

Casey has another international cap to add to his tally, his best one yet.

on review mcclousklys try was a thing of beauty.

that was a pure example of heads up rugby where we played a pattern to immediately take advantage of a broken defensiove lione of japan.

Phase 1 starts with keenan gathering a clearance kick on the 5 half ways between the irish 22 and 10. Immediately passes inside to Carbery and everyone expects the garryowen back onto keenan. instead carbery recognises that the Japanese line is bowed, takes it to the 10 and chips over the top with only the japenese 9 in that area of the field. The 9 makes a balls of it as he doesnt get to the pitch of the kick and it bounces immediately before him and squirts past. carbery shows great bravery to dive onto the ball between two jap forwards. VDFs clear out is, as always, immediate and strong.

Phase 2 starts with JGP spreading the pass left in a less than 2 sec ruck. ireland have set up in their recognisable attack pattern of a pod (bealham, doris and Ryan... inside to out), playing off 9 this time as carberys on the ground. However, again, the heads up call is not to take it into contact as someone recognises that its a 3 on 1 on the outside. JGPs pass is a 15m skip pas to doris, which pulls in Leitch and (i think) Tamura. Doris is brilliant here and pulls the ball back to Keenan running a perfect unders line and flys through the gap between tamura and the Japanese wing. From here its a 4 on 1

Phase 3. Keenan gives a quick pass to mcclousky as the jap 9 is within range to tackle keenan. Everyones full out at this stage, and inside the 22. mcclosky draws maserwa and passes to POM. Maserwa does well and pushes out onto POM to tackle, but POM is too strong and bursts through. Its must be said at this point the Irish communication isnt great as both Stockdale and POM run the same line. POM take sthe last tackle but 100% ensures he keeps his hands free and throws a lovely off load over his left shoulder. Mcclously in the right place to gather and touch down in the corner.

fantastic team try which showed absolutely a "heads up" change of plan from the schmidth era where carbery would have bombed the ball down down for keenan to run onto. Also, the pull back from doris was different from where we would have previously driven the pod up.

There is certainly progression happening... and hopefully with more game time these abilities will be honed.

Some howlers in that highlights vid:

5:21 McCloskey should have taken pillar.
9:03 Burns just heads off across the pitch away from the action, with half the Japanese team on the RHS.

Many many more howlers in the game.

Japan were without Himeno and Shota, probably their two best players against us in 2019.

I remember commenting on this at the time, mistakenly thinking it might have been JGP.

Now you can say that burns was playing out of position somewhat with Carbery in the line as well, but anyone should be able to see the mismatch in numbers that was there.

I just don’t rate burns, don’t think for a second he is good enough to be an international level OH.
