    Hi all,

I've been considering getting a Steam Deck and just wondering is there anywhere that sells refurbished models to Ireland or is the whole refurbished steam deck market mainly in the US?

I see the likes of Backmarket and Cex have refurbished models but they're actually more expensive than buying from Steam.

I was looking at the end OLED version rather than LCD. Would there be a noticeable difference between the 2?

Valve themselves sell refurbished Steam Decks with warranties and all, but they tend to be in and out of stock.

If you can afford the OLED model, that’s the one to go for. I have an LCD and it’s perfectly fine, but I bought it well before the OLED was announced. An OLED with HDR and a higher refresh rate is an objective improvement, on top of the other upgrades like better battery. It’s a no brainer if you have the option and the money IMO.

The two biggest improvements with the OLED is the screen and the 25% bigger battery, there's also a number of smaller improvements such as more efficient processor for slightly longer battery, faster RAM for slightly improved game performance, better cooling so quieter fan, improved touch screen and touch pads, better WiFi and improved shoulder buttons.

That said the LCD functions 99% the same and is still a great device, most of the improvements are minor and you wouldn't be left out.

    Thanks @johnny_ultimate and @DaveyDave

I assumed you can connect most controllers to it mainly when hooking it up to the TV? I thought I saw somewhere that you can use your PS5 controller with it.

Any essentials to get from the off with it other than a dock for it? I'm a casual enough gamer so don't need anything mad

Only real essentials are a cheap dock, SD card for more space if required and a case if you dont get one with yours. I got mine with a shell on the deck already which is good to have for protection and has a kick stand on it too and also a screen protector.

The SD card, a dock with power pass-through, and a screen protector are prob my only "essentials". But there are some "nice to haves" too.

I picked up a Jaux stand. Same shape as the dock but has no cable ports, so the Deck can simply stand in it. Handy if you don't like a case with kickstands but still want to be able to sit it up in random locations as you can carry it about easily.

I picked up a cheap portable USB C monitor on Ali Express too so I can play on a bigger screen without having to move the dock.

Almost all controllers work, PS5 works fine, you just need to pair it via blue tooth (hold the PS button and the share button when turning on the controller and the bars will start flashing, then find it in Bluetooth controllers in settings), but if you can find a cheap Stadia controller online you can update it to use blue tooth and it is one of the nicest controllers ever made.

On the Deck itself then, get a plug-in called "Decky Loader" It is essential in my book. It gives you loads of cool plug-ins, with Junk-store being a great way to get the Epic store to work, css loader lets you change the look and feel of the UI, and SteamGridDB lets you easily add artwork to non-steam games to your library looks nice.

Learn how to add Chrome as a Non-Steam Game and set the launch path to open things like Netflix, Disney, Xbox Cloud for Streaming etc. That way you can add Chrome multiple times and (use decky loader > Steam grid DB) to add artwork and make anything that is a website a one-click app. Or you can use the Decky Loader plug in called "Non Steam Launcher" and it will add all the sites via chrome for you. Makes life a little easier.

Great tips, thanks. Are a lot of the emulators free to download such as the emulators to play the old classics?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 18,851 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kimbot

Yes, just lookup Emudeck and it installs everything you will ever need :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,121 ✭✭✭Colemania

Thanks all. I think I'll go with the OLED (use the work Christmas voucher early) and I've bought a stadia controller for 15 euro from adverts as recommended above.

I'm sure I'll be back with questions once I get it but looking forward to getting my hands on it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,393 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

I have the cheapest Jsaux dock, doesn't come with a charger but was also 1/3 the price of the official dock. Could double as a stand if using a controller as it only has a short USB hanging out of it and is fairly compact. The OLED has a Bluetooth wake-up feature where you can use your controller to turn the Deck on similar to PS5/Xbox although I haven't tried it myself.

Make sure to get a quality SD card from SanDisk or Samsung, they're cheap enough these days.

Some older PC titles don't support controllers but you can set a community profile for a game as someone else has likely already set up the buttons.

EmuDeck is setup through desktop mode, you will need to download the ROMs yourself and certain consoles require BIOS files to boot. Plenty of videos about this on YouTube, the older games from the SNES/Mega Drive in particular look great on the OLED.

There's a pretty good community online around it, I'd say just get used to it first before you start tweaking any settings.

I have a (cheap) dock, screen protector, hardshell case, and joystick covers. I never take it out of the dock lol.

I use a Bluetooth ps4 controller and usb mouse and keyboard with it.

I used a wii u pro controller and a cheap knockoff switch pro controller too, but the ps4 one having the icons for the buttons on screen was easier for picking up new games. Also i set the light to red, which was a nice touch.

Where do you find cheap docks? Amazon?

Any need for something like this? I can pick it up elsewhere for 25 euro

I can't find any docks under £20 so not sure where to look for the cheap ones

I bought this one for 7 pounds: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0C69JZM95?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

Any usb c hub with hdmi and pass through charging will work. I have two similar to these and they work perfect. Might be a different brand but they are the same as this.

Also have a much cheaper one that was 3 pounds that actually works better than these ones as in it will automatically switch to the right hdmi channel when you turn teh deck on - my other 2 you have to use the remote to change to the right channel. That extra step is tiring!!!

Look in the warehouse and you`ll get them under 10 pounds GB.

Dont know why that link is so long.

With that hub you linked, you obviously use a cheap stand with it then do you or is there no real need for a stand?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,617 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

A stand will just keep it in one spot, the hubs just connect using usb c so you can just as easily leave it plonked behind tv or wherever you want it.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,922 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hellrazer

I dont use a stand-plonk it down on the media stand.

For anyone who ordered the steam deck directly from Steam, did GLS deliver it to you also? Mine is with GLS and left the parcel centre in the Netherlands on Sunday night and there's been no update since then

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,922 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hellrazer

Wouldnt be that unusual - Usually theres no updates and then suddenly you get a notification to say its being delivered the same day or next day.

Ya, mine sat in a state like that for a few days and then it went out for delivery. Just to note - GLS were particularly poor for me and needed to be chased more than once (and they ended up delivering to the wrong house) - so you may need to keep on top of them. Hopefully it's all good though.

Lack of GLS updates aside (still no update by the way), how long did it take to deliver once ordered? I ordered 29th August

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,617 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Mine was shipped on 29th December, delivered on January 5th (to the wrong house, but I still got it).

Does anyone know how to find out the non steam stuff that is taking up space in storage? At the moment mine is saying 80gb of non steam content. I've checked other store games that are installed and that amounts to about 30gb and I've no idea what the other 50gb could be so I could delete it. Any ideas how to get rid of this other than a factory reset?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,147 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Think there is a Decky loader plug in called "Storage Cleaner" that can help.

A lot of that "other" is shader caching. And also remember to empty the bin in desktop mode. Lots of deleted stuff can sit in there too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,597 ✭✭✭DeSelby83

Great thanks, I'll give that a go later and see how I get on.

EDIT: This worked a treat, cleared up about 30gb.

You can also enable a proper delete option for desktop mode rather than move to the bin. Can't remember off the top of my head but I think it was just an option in file explorer settings.

Anyone think valve will do a fixing discount on the oled model soon? I'm considering it, but wouldn't mind 10% off. It'll be out a year soon. Can't remember how long the LCD was out before it was discounted

It's trying to run directx i think at boot.

Need some suggestions please my Steam Deck has been gathering dust for months…

I was saving Balatro for my Christmas holidays but caved and tried it last night, fook me glad I did, what a letdown, I didnt even realise the coulored circles I was beating were the actual bosses, I was waiting for one to appear like in Slay the Spire! Is that all there is? Bigging up your numbers pointlessly? Surely the most overrated game of recent times.

I've no specific suggestions (my SD is also gathering dust the last while, same for all my machines tbh) but the Steam Autumn sale just started last night so there might be something that takes yer fancy at a discount:

    https://store.steampowered.com/

I'm with you on Balatro - bought it for the iPad to play on a plane trip. Gave it maybe 30 mins before turning it off, it just confirmed that I don't like poker or those rogue-like card deck games. Waste of a tenner that was. 😁

My son tells me that Valve will release what will essentially be a SD for your face - a wearable with 2 hand controllers.

This is the modern indie game industry, get a bunch of influencers and review sites to go crazy over it for a few weeks, sell a bunch of copies at indie game prices to rake in a pile of cash before anyone notices the games has zero depth

Any particular genre of games you're after? I've got mine hooked up to a keyboard, mouse and monitor so it's mostly used for RTS games. I find the PS5 is just that bit more optimised for FPS and the like

If you like some grand strategy I think X4 is in sale, and there's a channel on YouTube called Perun Gaming which is doing an excellent playthrough/guide at the moment

Yeah I think I need to get my dock and a wireless PS5 controller sorted, the small screen is really starting to annoy me now.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,136 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Eh that’s not at all a fair description of Balatro. If people didn’t like it, fair enough - plenty of acclaimed games I don’t like either. But I and many others found it to be a genuinely ingenious piece of game design with plenty of depth. There are all sorts of fun strategies and combos that can be built from clever play and synergies. To dismiss it as a cash grab is cynical in the extreme - it’s a fantastic game IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,617 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Just bought the Spider-Man games there. I nearly forgot that the likes of CDKeys are cheaper than Steam, even with a sale. I also picked up NBA 2k25, as I have been jonesing to play a proper sports game on my deck and I think they've been lacking. This is properly verified for deck, so looking forward to giving it a lash.

It takes ages to install big games on steam though.

Hi all, Looking for a bit of help - currently playing through Indiana Jones on the Xbox pc app. Id like to be able to play on the deck through the cloud gaming but Im having an issue where the deck isnt working as a controller - it says no input device detected when I try to launch the game and whne the games loads the buttons do nothing - BTW it works for every other game except the Indiana Jones one - has any one any ideas?

    Thanks.
