I was ready and set for a career in science or something, but family circumstances meant I had to go into hands-on engineering instead.
It's been useful, certainly, but I'd much rather have had forty years of clean hands and a steady salary.

we have been looking for heavy machinery mechanics. most these days think it's plugging in the computer and telling you what is wrong. they get a shock when they are expected to fix the fault too as well

Apparently back in the day butchers could be excused from jury duty because they would be too used to cutting up meat and so wouldn't be shocked at grotesque murders and dat.
