    Call Jersey Joe Duffy.

  • Mightn't have had the money beyond that to pay the €300-€400 to see a consultant, eg not the €kk to carry out any procedure, but I’d liked to have heard the actual detail here. Was a price mentioned? Did she say “ah we can’t afford that” If it was going to cost her and she can’t afford it all, I’m quite sure people would give a good dig out. Tbh I think he very likely needs surgery to remove toe. This might have been discussed as a likelihood and rejected as a prospect .

Considering the hospital is already under construction, how does the design cost suddenly go up by 100 million??

  • I’m still puzzled re exact train events that John Joe’s mother went through with her son. Especially re Beacon. Would need to listen back, but did she say he had the MRI done privately there or that they saw a consultant there? Or both?

If it were just the MRI, well the way it works in my case whilst attending Prof Tubridy’s public neuro clinic, Prof orders the MRIs and advised me to have them done privately in Blackrock and the results sent back for him to review in his public clinic. The reason he asks me to have them done privately, apart from being covered by VHI, is that I was able to have 3 private MRIs done in one year as he wants to track progression radiologically, but he told me St Vincent’s public protocol is that you have ONE MRI a year, even when he wants more done. What’s more, the MRI waiting list in St Vincent’s public is near on a year. Having it done quickly in private hospital won’t bring forward any public clinic visit for purpose of review, but it means Prof Tubs has more timely & frequently performed imaging to go by in his evaluation.

Is it the case that John Joe has his scan done privately but it simply didn’t speed up the public consultation? They’d need to decide to try full private, and try and get funded. He might get somewhere. Though I’d guarantee nothing in this country.

  • Could John Joe rename himself Ivanko Yosip in order to speed up the medical process?

Does she go in with a 'I cannot afford' or my son has 'special needs'?

I believe the son is now too old for the children's hospitals, but the adult hospitals will accept 16 year olds. They talked about needing a general anaesthetic, I don't know what is so special about that? It gets to the stage where losing the toe is better than living in pain with it.

In the end of the day, it sounds like her local GP is incompetent. The GP should be ensuring the toe nail was treated. It sounds like they ran out of ideas when the antibiotics did not work.

  • Got good news!!! My superb tenants have forwarded full deposit to buy house, and said they are really delighted to be able to buy the house they love and what a good landlord I’ve been to them! wonderful when it works out like that for everybody!

I hope the young man gets his toe/leg sorted out.

Lots of the story makes no sense at all. He was in a boarding school and riding horses, but can't seem to get competent treatment for his toe for the last 3 years. Says is causes great pain after an hour of walking, but is out of education for the last year , after only just turning 17 a few days ago.

I have no idea of the families situation, but the whole situation is very strange as far as I can see. Like someone mentioned maybe they fell on hard times. (can easily happen due to a family illness etc)

  • 18 years tenants, never once in that time were they one day late with rent. Never ever a bother, they did everything by the book. Once painted it, kept flowers on the balcony, settled into the community. Got these tenants because I specifically allowed pets and of course our North-Eastern European friends love their pets. Generally speaking avid pet owners like themselves are more likely to be responsible types.

Its not hard times. If your child was in that level of pain for 3 years, you would remortgage your house or sell your car. I suspect its a mixture of apathy and ignorance from the GP and the hospital(s). No-one giving clear instructions on the course of action, there was no mention of referral to a specialist. As someone else said, the GP ran out of ideas when the anti-biotics didn't work.

When I was 17, someone dropped the wheel of an anti-aircraft gun on my toe, which shattered the nail. It took a year for the nail to finally fall off, it then took a further 2 years to grow back and look normal again. A podiatry special probably would have removed the nail by now, and let it regrow naturally, with regular check ups. Did the GP refer John Joe to a specialist?

On the off chance John Joes mother is reading this thread, if she hasn't done so already she should call the Galway Podiatry Clinic on 091 564417
