Zappone is a grubby little parasite and we dodged a major bullet. Fair play to the opposition for holding the crony government to account.

I actually think the media played a bigger part in all this for a change, front and centre on every program every day for weeks. Either way, she is finished in this country and that's the main thing, horrible freeloading creature.

I hope it opens the door to vetting all these gifted tax payer funded roles.

Simon Coveney playing a blinder with the Brits over the weekend, in the job he's still in.

Hows all this holding to account craic going for ye? Any sackings, resignations or reassignments yet?

Hope you're all looking forward to budget day. Only three more to go before we decide once again whether we give SF the keys to the Kingdom. Exciting eh?

No doubting Simon is damaged. Having to explain his intemperate, not very contructive outburst on Twiiter and his undermining of the President, isnt a great start to the week TBH

Did I miss Simon's appearance with PAC?

Lar seems to be gloating that he "got away with this" - which by all metrics was cronyism, but I'd argue he's walking around as damaged goods, rubbing shoulders with those celebrating partition, despite the president's refusal to partake in it will damage him further.

The people of Cork can judge him next time they get their chance.

You really think a childish, unseemly and pointless Twitter rant with Lord frost is going to help or make the slightest difference🙄 what a bizzare notion, let me think for a moment....

O yes, Coveney is the Minister for foreign affairs, which I assume requires a basic understanding of Diplomacy.

This is the Same Coveney who'll be trotting up to an event (not political, Alledgedly) the president declined to attend and who got majority support for said decision. Coveney will be bringing along the FF boy wonder, Jack Chambers and by all accounts, furious reaction within FF over this bizzare decision.

Let's move onto holding account. As far as I'm aware nothing has changed, you've obviously seen the FG polls, Harris still hasn't sought to have Dail record changed, so presumably he's accepted a leak occurred. Still all quite from the scarlet pimpernel junior minister but we know a number of FG TD"S aware a sting took place and the TAOISEACHS department SG appearance at the FA committee, hardly a glowing endorsement, so accountability continues to be sadly lacking. Where would you expect reassignments to take place exactly🤔 the dogs on the street knew there would be no resignations, reassignments or accountability, this was about exposing cronyism and not only was that proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, this debacle exposed the hypocrisy and indeed disfunction this farcical coalition specialises in.

Re the Keys to the Kingdom and of course your well observed feelings on SF, they are actually playing a blinder, The entire SF parliamentary party could actually all head off for an extended sabbatical and just sit back and watch FFGG slowly implode and even the most inexperienced political observer can see where this government is heading and I for one will enjoy its slow demise. They are damaged goods and with the pile of Gik coming the countries way, I'd be amazed it will last another year.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

That says more about the coalition than anything else. Not something to brag about. So not holding politicians to account is not only standard practice but bragging rights?

Has anyone been appointed to the position yet?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,189 ✭✭✭Brucie Bonus

It's a sham. They'll hope it goes away. It might when Coveney retires. It'll be a bad smell follows him everywhere like Varadkar's criminal investigation and lies.

Why doesn't one of us apply for the job and see what response we get.

You've been hiding a bit since you suggested the 3rd Slaintecare resignation was not related to Slaintecare progress. Any update on those rumours you were spreading about Professor O'Connor? Thought not.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

This won’t be forgot about all over Ireland let alone Cork and the blue shirts 👔 will get the answer at the polling station and Katherine long gone, also lar loves stirring sh it’s over on Munster rugby forum laughing at a player getting a serious injury. Says a lot about the measure of the person.

Report from the DFA says that future special envoy appointments should be held by open competition

The Department of Foreign Affairs launched a review of how special envoys are appointed..The Irish Times understands the review found that on occasions where the Department of Foreign Affairs management board approves the creation of an envoy role, and the Cabinet signs off on it, expressions of interests should always be sought through an open competition.

Such roles may be created in instances where the Department does not have expertise within the diplomatic corps.

The Cabinet would then have to approve any appointment after the open competition.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/expressions-of-interest-should-be-sought-for-all-special-envoy-roles-report-1.4742820

Hopefully this will go some way to prevent future Fine Gael cronyism.

But what Id like to know is given Simon Coveney claimed this special envoy to the UN role was so important for Ireland then why hasnt he appointed someone else rather than Zappone? The proof is in the pudding as they say and seeing as Coveney hasnt filled this vitally important role it would seem obvious that he was lying through his teeth on the importance of it while trying to pull a crony stroke.

The 'lessons learned' guff was insulting. Like anyone from FG or FF need schooling on how cronyism can happen.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,416 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

What I don't understand is how the diplomatic corps are still functioning without this important role being filled.

Anyone else quite partial to a bit of bacon sliced blueshirt arse on the waffleburger of a Tues?

What I don't understand is what has happened to the general election we were promised on this thread once this report was released. Scouring the news media and I see next to nothing about it.

Neither do I see Simon's head on a plate. Surely, this was hyperbole again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,416 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

In the frenzied atmosphere that surrounded this over the summer, it was the scandal that has come closest to causing an election. Elections have been called for less tbf.

While the government ultimately weathered it (and I did think it would), it has damaged it - in particular Simon Coveney. He was FG's Taoiseach in waiting before this happened, but now?

  • Registered Users Posts: 332 ✭✭MarkEadie

Cronyism happens in all areas of society when it comes to getting jobs.

That will all be forgotted by the time the election happens in a few years. In fact, outside of the most embittered, the whole thing has already been forgotten.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,189 ✭✭✭Brucie Bonus

Maybe FF/Greens were given too much credit? I would have left government over Varadkar's leak, had he not at least stepped aside, before this. This just made Coveney, Donohue and Varadkar look grubby and FF/Green look like ethics are less important than pensions.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,189 ✭✭✭Brucie Bonus

Yet here you are trying to deflect. Must be worrying to some.

  • Registered Users Posts: 27,971 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

Not at all, this has got an unsurprising to me lack of attention today, yet I was being told only a few weeks ago on these very threads that the government was in danger of imminent collapse.

As for trying to deflect, I don't have to deflect, there is nothing to deflect from, lol.

They'll turn blind eyes until the cows come home in order to cling to power...or until the shredding is finished, whichever happens sooner.

    Circling the wagons to continue.

  • Registered Users Posts: 27,971 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

    Those are delusionary paranoid theories.

The reality is the public have already forgotten about Zappone.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

They may have largely forgotten Zappone, but not what happened.

  • Registered Users Posts: 69,156 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

That they have circled the wagons to protect wrongdoers and wrongdoing is 'delusionary and paranoid?

Don't think so blanch. Have you seen the polls? Leo, as predicted by this deluded paranoid has led his party back to General Election status and I further reckon he can knock another few points off that too. FF might finish ahead of them again, next time out.
