Towing question.

Hi Folks,

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot.

I have a 152 1.6d Avensis EST that I want to use to tow a trailer. According parkers.co.uk the car is 1460kg weight is capable of towing a trailer with breaks max 1600kg. Am I right in saying that on a B license, I can tow a max weight 750kg or if the trailer exceeds 750 kg I can add the weight of the car and the max weight of the trailer and am OK as long as it does not exceed 3500kg? So in theory, I am OK to tow a trailer with a max weight of 1500kg?

You also need to ensure you are not over the max towing capacity of your vehicle, the avensis has a towing limit of 1300kg

If max trailer weight capacity for your car is 1600, then towin 1500kg trailer is all right.

On the licencing side though, you assume if you add 1460kg (weight of your car) + 1500kg (declared gross weight of the trailer) = 2960kg and this doesn't exceed 3500kg then you are fine. This assuming is incorrect, as you should consider D.G.V.W (declared gross vehicle weight) of your car instead of it's actuall weight.

If I checked it correctly your avensis should have D.G.V.W of around 2040kg, so if you add 1500kg trailer weight then it unfortunately exceeds 3500kg making it illegal to tow with B licence.

You can check your car D.G.V.W in your logbook.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. The car is a UK import. I have the original UK reg number and checking the spec on https://www.parkers.co.uk/toyota/avensis/touring-sports-2015/16d-business-edition-5d/specs/ it tells me the max braked towing capacity to be 1600kg. Not doubting you but where did you get the 1300kg from? I just want to have all my facts straight.

That is great information. Thank you. It was cars weight vs DVGW that got me. A lot clearer now. Summing it out, I can tow a max of 1460kg which is a little bit lower then what I was hoping for but at least now I know where I need to be. Many thanks.
