Some spanking Betis gave Sociedad and we were without our south american and central american players. 4-0 it ended, Juanmi with another two goals, carvalho was very good tonight I thought.

Good comeback win by Barca, beating Atletico 4-2. Great volley by Alba:

It's been a good weekend for Madrid. Narrowly beat Getafe 1-0 after Sevilla held by Osasuna to go 6 points clear.

Saw highlights of Valencia's goalless draw with Sociedad. Pleased to see David Silva get a great reception on his return to Mestalla.

Betis beat Rayo in the first leg of their semi final, check out the great goal by William Carvalho, absolute filth.

Hi guys, I’m in Seville on Sunday week and was hoping to see a game but see it’s the derby against Betis!

Sevilla’s official website says no tickets are available so I’m guessing it’s sold out.

Have I any chance of giving a ticket when I’m there or is there anywhere else I could possibly pick one?

Shocking defeat for Atletico tonight to bottom of the table Levante

They really are a pale shadow of what they have been.

Very surprised at the result as Levante have been awful this season. Had a look at the highlights and Levante looked worthy of the win. It should give United a bit of hope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Danjuma never took a pen in his career according to the commentator on the highlights package and he ended up scoring 2 of them. Grabbed a hat-trick in the game too. He's having a great first season in La Liga. Very curious to see how he fares against Juve on Tuesday.

Goal of the Season contender from Gabriel Paulista:

Elsewhere, Benzema with a late winner at Rayo to give Madrid a 9 point lead at the top. Courtois made some good saves. Pressure now on Sevilla ahead of the Seville derby tomorrow. A win for Betis would bring them within 2 of their rivals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Surprised Sevilla were held at Rayo. They've dropped too many points of late. Madrid can go 10 clear if they win at Mallorca tomorrow.

Madrid gone 10 points clear at the top after beating Mallorca 3-0. Surely won't be stopped now with 10 games to go. Benzema with a brace and is now in the history books:

Barca 4-0 up on Madrid, didn't even realise it was on!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Crazy result, and yet it doesn't hurt them too much. 10 point lead going into the game and now a 9 point lead after Sevilla had yet another draw.

Didn't realise Oyarzabal did his cruciate. Looking at a long spell out and will probably miss the World Cup. Real shame. Can't see Sociedad making a push for the CL now.

Feck, I meant to watch it to see if Barcelona were progressing under Xavi.

Thought of it before my dinner at 7pm but then forgot.😊

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    Apparently neither did Madrid!

An absolute sh1tshow for Madrid. Completely outplayed and outclassed. We constantly hear about Modric and Kroos as being top players, yet they were non existent tonight. Busquets and Pedri bossed them.

Worse thing is, it could easily have been 7 or 8. Barca missed more easy enough chances.

Chelsea will have 2 easy ties against Madrid in the CL.

Vini Jr is being hyped to death, but I've yet to see him play well against any top team. May as well not have been on tonight. Madrid need to ship him and Roydrigo out, and get mbappe in. And they need to sort out that defence. It was like watching a pub side tonight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,605 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Watched that last night. Strange game, nothing like the intensity of Real Madrid v Barca games of recent times.

Barca absolutely hammered them, no contest. The co commentator said Real rested Benzema and maybe weren’t too bothered about it? Not sure about that, on other occasions Real even if in a dominant position re the league would still have found a way to win this game just to stick it to Barca when they’re struggling.

Perhaps a sign that this Barca outfit are getting their act together. Have been watching them in the Europa League and they’re definitely progressing.

As a Barca fan, I think there's a lot of similiarities between this season and Laporta's first season - the famous documentary season. Except for the scale of the debt. That also ended with an unlikely win (and my favourite) in Madrid chasing the title from a long way back after the January transfer window transformed everything.

It's undeniable that Dembele in particular has suddenly found form in the final six months of his contract, injury free and he has been excellent. Though as for Pique and his "we are back" schtick...it's a lot longer before he can say that...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,295 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Isnt it amazing how Dembele has finally found some form with his contract expiring in the summer.

Amazing what a bit of motivation can do when a player is looking for a new club and a payday.

Really is disgraceful referring in the Getafe game

How the **** is that a peno and the refs are making a shambles of VAR

Just turned on and Benzema has scored to give Madrid a 3-2 lead against Sevilla. Madrid had been 2-0 down. This would be a big result.

Final whistle goes. Madrid with a 15 point lead over Barca who have 2 games in hand. Six games left for Madrid:

    Osasuna (A)

    Espanyol (H)

    Atletico (A)

    Levante (H)

    Cadiz (A)

    Real Betis (H)

Can't see Madrid bottling that run-in. The Madrid derby and Betis are tricky but the others aren't too bad.

Benzema with another clutch moment. Really hope he gets the Ballon d'Or. He must be the favourite now.

Another unbelievable ending to a Madrid game. They really don't know when they are beat, do they!

It's a bit of an early crisis for Xavi in his Barcelona Management Career

Thought he didnt help himself with the lineup and the subs were far to late

    Very poor managing tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

I caught the last 30 minutes or so. Cadiz really should have made it 2-0 and missed a sitter. A massive result for them. Takes them out of the relegation zone and up to 16th. Barca stay on 60 points. Top 4 still in the balance for Xavi's side and the game at Sociedad on Thursday will be very interesting. Madrid now 7 points away from securing the title. They could win it away to Atletico, actually.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Big win in the battle for survival for Mallorca over Alaves, taking them out of the drop zone and up to 16th. Alaves stay bottom and 6 points from safety.

Premier Sports showing the Copa del Rey final from 9pm. Teams:

Been a fan of Fekir for a few years so I hope Betis get the win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Betis vs Valencia is going to extra time after normal time ends 1-1. Only tuned in during the second half and it's been entertaining. Both sides with chances to win it. Could go either way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Going to penalties. Was Bravo any use at saving them when he was at City? Can't remember.

Betis win the Copa del Rey, winning 5-4 in the shootout. Bravo didn't save a pen but the youngster Musah blazed over. Happy for Fekir and Pellegrini.

Xavi poor team managing selection carries on

How Aubameyang and Torres keeps starting is beyond me. Traoré should be starting and has done more in his short sub appearances in the last 2 games than Torres has ever done starting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

That's 3 home defeats in a row for Barca. They should still make the CL but they might crawl over the line if this keeps up.

Madrid just need a point to wrap up the title. Wonder might Ancelotti rest players at the weekend against Espanyol, in between the 2 ties against City. He has that luxury now. Not sure Pep will take any chances since Liverpool are breathing down their necks.

Impressive point for Cadiz at Sevilla tonight. Check out the free-kick from Lucas Perez which is a goal of the season contender. The precision on this is so good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Madrid are confirmed champions after beating Espanyol 4-0.

Ancelotti the first coach to win league titles in each of the top 5 leagues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Atletico beaten by Athletic Club 2-0. I had a look at their run-in and it's pretty tough: Madrid (H), Elche (A), Sevilla (H), Sociedad (A). It could get pretty tight as far as Champions League football goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Levante relegated after being hammered 6-0 by Madrid. Sad to see them go. They provided a lot of entertainment. Still unclear who will join them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,967 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Gotta give credit to Real for buying two kids who've both turned into serious players. Imo Vinicius is close to becoming the best player in football. Both only 21, Rodrygo still developing, anybody's guess how good he is going to become.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Great to see Benzema equal Rauls goalscoring record for Madrid. Now joint second of all time. And he did it in about 125 games less than Raul. A true legend.

If he doesn't get the Ballon D'Or this year, then there is something rotten going on behind the scenes.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,246 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Even if he wins it, hope he does, that wouldn't rule out something rotten behind the scene

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Well they can't give it to Messi again, after the season he has had. Or Ronaldo.

Not sure who has really stood out on the world stage this season. Perhaps Benzema, De Bruyne, Salah, Modric? Probably missing some other good performers, but I even think the latter 2 have only performs in spurts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Alaves are relegated after losing to Levante. Mallorca have climbed out of the bottom three thanks to a 92nd minute winner. Cadiz slip to 18th despite a 1-1 draw with Madrid. One of Granada, Mallorca and Cadiz will go down. Their final fixtures:

Granada (37 pts) vs Espanyol (H)

Mallorca (36 pts) vs Osasuna (A)

Cadiz (36 pts) vs Alaves (A)

Mallorca have the better head-to-head over Cadiz, so just need to match their result next week. Cadiz have the better fixture though.

Sevilla have also guaranteed Champions League football thanks to a late equaliser against Atletico. Betis and Sociedad are in the Europa League. It will be either Villarreal or Athletic Club in the Conference League. Villarreal's final game is away to Barca, and Athletic Club are away to Sevilla.

What do Madrid do now? Reportedly, they didn't prioritise Haaland as they thought they were getting Mbappe. I actually think balance-wise, this might not be too bad. Had Mbappe arrived, Vini Jr would have had to move over to the right side which could have been problematic. Now they can sign a RW instead. Salah or Mahrez would be good candidates. Raphinha could work, although rumour has it he's heading to Barca.

La Liga aren't happy about it.

Maybe he should look at his own to mega free spending clubs while he is at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Aye its a bit of kettle, pot, black.

But these new clubs are spending on a completely different level to how the elite clubs of old used to. But that's neither here nor there, uefa are meant to have ffp rules. But clubs are p1ssing all over them. It's the way of the modern game

But a real kick in the teeth for Perez and Madrid. A major embarrassment. The fans more or less thought it was a done deal.

Not much left on the market to fill the gaps. Their squad needs a couple of superstars for sure. Maybe even up to a handful to replace the older heads. Perhaps they will move for likes of Pogba, Dybala, Sterling, Mane, Salah?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Granada are relegated after being held to a 0-0 draw by Espanyol. Jorge Molina had a penalty that could have kept them up but he put it wide.

Cadiz and Mallorca picked up wins at Alaves and Osasuna respectively to save themselves.
