No idea if there is a connection between the two men. Yacht Waxwing was one of the very few local pleasure craft in the SW that uses AIS, so the name registered. The only other that is active regularly is John Brennan's 'rib' Dromquinna, a Redbay yoke.

Peter and Pat Lawless are sons of Pat Lawless of Limerick, who sailed around the world many years ago after a few failed attempts.

Peter is hoping to get going in a few weeks. Currently prepping the boat and raising funds on YouTube

Strange the Rte article made no mention of Peter who I believe is also a carpenter. Then again, Peter makes no mention of Pat in his vlogs on YouTube.

Peter did have a brother visit him this year when moored in Portamao in the Algarve.

Watched the piece on the 9pm News, Peter was there in the group seeing him off.

In 1968, Robin Knox Johnston became the first man to sail solo nonstop unassisted around the world. He was the only one of nine competitors to finish in that inaugural race. The rest either sank, retired or took their own lives.

"It's old-school sailing, compass and sextant, navigating with the stars and sun, no modern equipment, we can't use GPS or satellite," Mr Lawless said.

    jesus....

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday_Times_Golden_Globe_Race

Nine sailors started the race; four retired before leaving the Atlantic Ocean. Of the five remaining, Chay Blyth, who had set off with absolutely no sailing experience, sailed past the Cape of Good Hope before retiring; Nigel Tetley sank with 1,100 nautical miles (2,000 km) to go while leading; Donald Crowhurst, who, in desperation, attempted to fake a round-the-world voyage to avoid financial ruin, began to show signs of mental illness, and then committed suicide; and Bernard Moitessier, who rejected the philosophy behind a commercialised competition, abandoned the race while in a strong position to win and kept sailing non-stop until he reached Tahiti after circling the globe one and a half times. Robin Knox-Johnston was the only entrant to complete the race, becoming the first man to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world. He was awarded both prizes, and later donated the £5,000 to a fund supporting Crowhurst's family.

Moitessier also admits to being suicidal at times. He was a fascinating character, rather eccentric and very French. His books are a good read but can be heavy going when he gets philosophical. His book ‘Tamata’ is autobiographical covering his early days and then his life on Tahiti

Knox- Johnson was one of those behind the Jules Verne, which he later won, sailing with Kiwi Peter Blake, they held the trophy for a few years in the 90's. A decade later when sailing up the Amazon on an ecology mission Blake was shot and killed by local mafia types.

Let them get out of the Atlantic first before talk of making it the whole way around.

Just looking on marine traffic and he's anchored off an island in Maderia. Hope its not more problems

Don't think so. He seems happy enough on FB.

Well, what a start to my solo circumnavigation.

Sailed approximately 1250 nm from Ireland to Madeira.

Anchored off a beach at 02:00 this morning, there was a beautiful bright moon to show me the way in.

Had a cup of tea and went to bed, first uninterrupted night's sleep in 9 days, feeling great after it too.

Cleared in with customs this morning, so all good there.

Now it’s time to clean and take care of Waxwing, she carried me here flawlessly, so she deserves to be looked after be me now

I have Wi-Fi and phone again and I am reading through my emails messages and texts, feeling huge help and support from all your lovely messages donation etc, thanks so much.

I will sail to the main island of Madeira in a few days and looking forward to meeting with the school there building a boat (Small boat project)

Will do regular posts for now and start my daily blog once sailing again.

Delighted people feel they are on this voyage of dreams with me, again loving the comments and feedback

"I will sail to the main island of Madeira in a few days and looking forward to meeting with the school there building a boat (Small boat project)"

So hes just on a jaunt around the world stopping into places or attempting some sort of "non stop" sail

Can't remember properly, but I think he intends doing it without docking in a marina. I could be wrong though.

Must be Peter is going for a jolly and Pat who is racing.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2022/0726/1312348-pat-lawless/

Competitors face a gruelling seven-to-11-month voyage, taking them past the five great capes, while they will not be permitted to land during the race.

"Over nine months solo, I've never done it. It’s the unknown, but I think I'll be well able for it," he said.

Yeah it's very confusing when it's 2 brothers.. Pete & Pat both doing their own circumnavigations in different ways!!

Pat has been doing well in the early stages of the Golden Globe... but there's early stages and there's early stages... and with almost 26 thousand nm to go, it's still too early to call 🤣

Can't quite remember the details but there definitely were 'restrictions' on his first attempt and I think it was 'not using marinas'. Must check it out in his earlier vids.
