Q about sale of Beer in Supermarkets...S

So, have noticed in supermarkets of late that Budweiser cans are only sold in packs of min 8 etc.. no longer available individually or even in packs of 4.. why is this? I don't think this is good - the more you have at home the more you might drink in one sitting.. (regardless of best intentions)

Not sure what supermarket u go to OP but my local Supervalu stopped selling singles about 6 months ago. Still have 4 packs though of most beers. Maybe it's a Supervalu policy if that's where u shop.

Maybe single cans were too easy to shoplift.

Maybe multi-packs are easier to stock.

Maybe Bud sales dropped so they only offer multi-pack.

Maybe multi-pack are easier to discount now that you can't run buy X get % off offers because of other nanny state nonsense.

It'll be a Diageo decision because the vast majority of their off sales would be in 8 packs. So they close down the 4 and single pack lines to save money.

You have bigger problems if you can't leave alcohol in the fridge than complaining about shops only selling multi packs of alcohol

The brewers make very little money from supermarkets and they have to shift volume to make it worth their while. Once upon a time they did this by offering a discount if you bought several beers in one go. They can't do that any more so to keep the volumes up they force you to buy multiples at once. It's another stupid unintended consequence of the Public Health (Alcohol) Act.

Diageo stopped brewing Budweiser a while back. That's why they created Rockshore. C&C now handles Bud as the Irish agent for AB InBev.

i suspect they only offer multipacks because the selling point of '1 for €2 but 8 for €12' is no longer possible. so they abandoned the pretence of selling them singly?

anyway, san miguel is a perfectly drinkable beer still being sold singly, €1.69 a can in my local. i'd drink that before i'd drink budweiser.

I really have to laugh the way they had to put doors at the entrance to the off license part, same in garages, "oh look Children, see those bad people going through that gate, you don't want to be like those when you're grown up" lol.

I'm in the supermarket, i'm about to sneeze, can't extract a tissue quick enough, so into the hand it goes, hand opens saloon type door to the off license, leaving millions of tiny covids on the door, the next person, opens the door, some little covids jump on, they scratch their nose, next thing they know its ICU, then It's I see you later.

Congratulations on completely missing my point.

It's going to be nothing but multi packs next year according to most of the drink reps who call to my shop. A lot of beers are likely going to vanish as well.

As for the OP well beer is still on sale in singles it's only soft drinks like Bud that are in multipacks

Minimum unit pricing. There's so much uncertainty about how people will react to it. Slabs are likely going to disappear for good after Christmas. Four packs seem to be what most companies think will be the main sellers. The price of 12/15 packs may be too high in the eyes of many consumers.

MUP kicks in properly from Jan 4th next. This means that a minimum price of (I think) 10c per gram of alcohol must be charged.

A forerunner to this is the abolition of bulk discounts (eg €1 each or 3 for €2). Now, its essentially "1 barcode = 1 price".

Diageo are trying to phase out single cans and push 4 & 8 packs on retailers. Great sport altogether.😁

Some products are already reducing in size to be able to maintain some semblance affordable pricing in the market.

What is the minimum unit price?

In Ireland, one standard drink in Ireland contains 10 grammes of alcohol. The minimum price for one standard drink will now be €1. Most alcoholic drinks are already above this, especially in pubs, clubs and restaurants.

10 cent MUP per 1 gram of alcohol

33cl of Guinness Extra Stout has 10.9 grammes alcohol, so MUP = EUR 1.09

50cl has 16.5g, so MUP = EUR 1.65

I think that is correct?

yeah, i was thinking about this earlier after having read the thread - why would guinness etc. have anything to fear from this affecting price? surely everything they sell is above the minimum price anyway?

Pricing is a spectrum. When the cheap stuff has to be priced the same as the premium stuff, the premium stuff has to raise its price to stay premium.
