Saorview approved television?

Hi,how can I check if a television on sale in a roi retail outlet is Saorview approved?also are roi retail outlets allowed sell none Saorview approved televisions without making a buyer aware of this fact if the case.

A retailer can sell whatever they want, and don't need to call out Saorview compatibility or not. I doubt there's a single TV on the market in Europe that isn't capable of working completely with Saorview considering its just NorDig anyway.

Thanks for the reply & link.I've searched the link for the model number of a television on sale in a roi outlet & it's not on the Saorview approved checker. The model number is " lg 43nanocell 796ne "

If you are really keen on this TV then when it says it can receive freeview HD this means it has the tuner to pick up SAORVIEW. As this tv has freesat hd it will need a UK post code and will in effect work as if it was in the UK. This means the saorview chanels will be in a higher number range like 800. To switch between saorview and satelllite can be a bind but it has been posted on here how to do a shortcut, You will have to search.

Once it is mpeg4, which it is, it will receive Saorview, the Saorview channels can be renumbered very easily. To quickly switch between Saorview and Freesat is easy to set and then it's just a long press, 3-5 secs to switch either way.

Two years ago I bought a Samsung TV which was certified as Saorview approved on the Saorview website but it couldn't handle Saorview subtitles. So much for relying on the Saorview website.

IIRC there may be an option to select the subtitle standard within the menu. Your TV may be set to DVB subtitles, not used by Saorview.

Saorview uses the old analogue teletext version, EBU subtitles.

Which to me, was a silly move. DVB subtitles look much better than EBU subtitles.

I'm not sure why they couldn't have implemented both if they were so hellbent on keeping EBU subtitles.

In hindsight we should've gone with the UK's D-Book standard instead of Nordig, a legacy of Comminucorp's Boxer consortium failed bid for the national commercial DTT licence.

Don't DVB subtitles use vastly more bandwidth? As the subtitles are basically pictures, not text sent to be displayed by the receiving TV.

With the original single mux idea, space was at a premium.

DVB Subtitling – Refers to a subtitle bitmap image that is compressed and sent as a DVB transport stream along with the DVB video and audio and decoded and displayed in the IRD. The latest specification also includes HD bitmap support. This gives the broadcaster full control of the appearance of the subtitles, as well as full support for all languages.

Thanks but unfortunately on my Samsung TV, when Subtitle is turned On, the only options are "Normal" or "Hearing Impaired" in Subtitle Mode

So, no Subtitles on Saorview on my 2016 model. I thought it might be because the TV has UK as country to get Freesat too, but it must be a Samsung issue

No subtitles because the TV is set to UK unfortunately, this is normal for any TV I've tested. My sister and and her husband are hard of hearing and use subtitles all the time so Freesat is not an option on their TVs.

EBU subtitles is not part of the UK's D-Book standard.

Just double checked both of my TVs, the Samsung has Subtitles only on Freesat channels and the LG - 32LM6300PLA (2019) has Subtitles on Saorview and Freesat channels. Both TVs have Country set to UK, rather than Ireland

Latest LG sets won't receive Irish Teletext and gives an on screen function not available message .

In freesat mode, they won't receive RED button text . Strangely, they will do red button text once and thats it.

My sets are set to UK for Freesat so maybe someone with country set to IRL can comment further.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the TV is expecting HbbTV when set to UK so it won't read the Saorview MHEG-5 service.

Won't receive red button text on freesat either except for the first time. After redirects you to iplayer which isn't very helpful in Ireland
