The title says it all, but why did I have to Google for half an hour before I found a report (extra .ie) which stated that it was a traveler brawl, and not the good local citizens of Tuam chopping each other up. Why the reticence in the Indo, Times etc,

Because it's important to know the full details. If it was a republican funeral would you like to know? What about if a load of neo nazis had a gathering and a massive brawl broke out would you prefer if those details where left out?

I understand what you mean and I actually agree. When I seen Tuam and brawl it didnt take a genuis to work out who was involved.

because its relevant that it was a traveller feud and not just random Tuam people fighting for no reason? Why would it not be included in any story?. In the newstalk Pat Kenny show a local councillor was interviewed and him and Anton Savage managed to talk about the issue without mentioning it was a traveller feud. Interesting that the the morning twitter page mentioned all the items except that item.

Will people ever leave them alone? It's just their culture....

On the one hand I agree with you. People should be just referred to as people.

On the other hand, travellers so routinely refuse to engage with society in general, are for the most part criminal family gangs, and openly call themselves travellers so as to isolate themselves from the rest of society in order to be able to call racism whenever anyone calls them out for their criminal/misogynistic/animal cruelty/barbaric/violent behaviour that not referring to them as travellers would seem to counter their own strong view of wanting to be seen as different from the rest of society.

I don't have a major problem with broadcasters been reluctant to mention this as a traveller feud.

Whether we like it or not Travellers are a part of our society so villifying an entire group is not helpful in the long run.

However this behaviour is despicable, and unfortunately does represent a persistent and nasty aspect of traveller culture.

The appropriate response is strong custodial sentences for those involved, there should be no leniency, (not optimistic about that happening though)

I think we all know exactly what the reticence is all about, Main street media dare not mention the T Word. RTE in particular falling over themselves this morning avoiding the dreaded T Word, its disgraceful. As another poster correctly described it, Media Ethnic Cleansing.

Violence and threat of violence is prevalent in the traveller culture .. to say otherwise is denial or virtue signalling of the highest order.

sure isn't there a small estate of houses that they refused to move in to as they didn't like being near another family .. instead they pitched up in a car park and whinge and moan about lack of toilets and facilities.

it's not racist or bigoted to point out facts like these .. I've yet to hear pavee point's take on the Funeral Smack Down event .. but more than likely they will want to have there own grace yards where they can practice their funeral customs in peace and away from the critical eye of the rest of society

See how we've been programmed? If you even refer to outright criminality as 'culture', then the word has no meaning. Rape, incest, murder can all be claimed as 'cultural' traits.

It's part of democratic and civilised norms to permit free speech, and the right to deny it or rebutt it. So if the 'Saw Doctors' in the Tuam graveyard were travelers, say it. Then let people deny or rebutt it, including the right to say you shouldn't identify a criminals identity or background. Where would we be if we couldn't refer to the largest organised drugs gang as 'The Kinahans', even though it might offend holders of the same surname? Who would object to the full identification of the community who supported the recent outrageous burglars' funeral, with all the trappings and glorification of a mobster's charter. Call it out, and shame them.

Settled or Buffer?

AFAIK a settled person is a Traveller who is no longer nomadic, who lives in a house, has a regular job. Despite all that, they are still ethnically Traveller, because that's who their family is.

Whereas a Buffer is a person who is not a ethnically a Traveller.
