I thought it was funny. 😁

Ejecta being projected everywhere big distances like missiles atm. Crazy explosive activity.

A rare and civil retort (Itssoeasy) and apology (Champagne Sally) on Boards. Why can't all users be like this?

Looks like further earthquake shaking there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

As awesome as this is to watch tonight must be quite frightening for anyone remotely close to that area. You can only wish them the best.

It's unfortunate something so interesting and fascinating comes with such loss too 🙁

This is violent activity tonight from the cone, no two ways about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,227 ✭✭✭pad199207

That looks quite frightening now tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

I think it's fair to say this is the most violent activity I have seen from it yet, and i've been following it more than most.

Taking offence ? How ? I’m in awe of @Kermit.de.frog and his doing the work he’s doing.

The distance of the ejections is mad now.

I think you can hear them landing closer now

I think the most worrying thing about tonight is that there is clearly a healthy amount of explosive gasses in these explosions. Some of these are absolutely enormous. It's like the eruption only started tonight and it's worse than what we have seen so far. The explosive gases are the first thing that is suppose to expire apparently.

We have seen plenty of plasma being flung in to the air to great heights before - but not quite like this. This is going everywhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,227 ✭✭✭pad199207

Gone quiet all of a sudden 😯

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Black smoke and ash is hiding the pyroclasts I think.

Still going strong and there is quite the angry lava fountain half way down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Bloody hell, makes you wonder how long the cone can contain this in it's current form

Lower lava vent really kicking off

A LOT quieter today. Hopes rising the eruption may be coming to an end.

    Latest here

The activity at the vents continues to decrease gradually, at least visually and audibly. Residents reported less explosions and less intense degassing noises. Explosions at the vent are intermittent and no longer as vigorous as before although ash emissions seemed to have picked up in the morning again.

On the webcam, it can be seen that lava emission continues, but also seems less vigorous. Some of it forms active lava flows on the lower flanks of the cone, overlapping older flows.

Volcanic tremor has remained at similar levels as yesterday, but continued to decrease overall. Hopes are emerging that the eruption might be approaching an end although this is still too early to be certain of.

A pair of two quakes with magnitudes 4.5 and 4.6 occurred last afternoon at 5.07 p.m. at approx. 38 depth within 10 seconds from each other, but so far, there seems not to be any significant change with other parameters (e.g. eruption intensity) that clearly correlates.

It is not known what the exact significance of these and other quakes is at the moment. Whether it is caused by an injection of new magma at depth, or gravitational adjustments perhaps caused by the depletion of magma from there or something else, is speculation. It might become clearer in the future (likely some time after the eruption ends), when the data currently collected by scientists will be more complete and when models will be made that can match the various data with the observations. For now, one can just wait and see...

We've been here before but fingers crossed it's for real this time.

Fires underway on this stream atm. Lava prob enter new area. Volcano still quiet but lava continues to flow from it.

A lot of lava now entering the sea in the vid above!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Here is clearer view of the top

After a couple of days of relative calm with very little activity, apart from some lava flows, this appears to be increasing in intensity tonight again. The fountains at the cone are back. There has been an increased frequency in earthquakes today compared to previous days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

New lava stream reached the ocean today.

    Here it is tonight.

Though I don't think it's touched the sea water yet

EDIT: anyone watching the live stream there was random explosive burst on the side of the mountain just now. Screen shot...

And it keeps trundling along this evening.

Getting going again tonight at the cone too

A lot of the lava is going straight in to lava tubes for the moment from the cone and coming out near the base. That could change quickly though. There have been 2,605 buildings destroyed so far during the eruption, vast majority by the lava flows. Others were destroyed being built on top of where vents emerged and became part of the cinder cone closer to the beginning and others by ash.

    Lava entering the sea tonight.

For now, back at the cone, it seems to be going at a consistent velocity. A lot of lava exiting lava tubes from the base of the volcano though.

    Live stream of the cone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

As you were in relation to this. Been consistent lower level activity at the cone last few days. Nothing spectacular.

There was another magnitude 5 earthquake around 9 am this morning. No one able to identify the significance of the quakes for the eruption at the surface.

I see more houses on fire on the live stream atm. The issue, I think, is the lava streams keep escaping their paths every now and again.

A mix of good and bad.

quite impressive pressure at the main vent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Yeah that started this afternoon. No visible impact on lava outflow so far at the surface. Should look good at night.

Nothing much to report today. Lava continued to flow through predefined channels. The cone is flaring up again tonight. A lot of ash continues to be emitted which can often block the view.

Cool volcanic lightning to be seen there too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 175 ✭✭teddybones

Mad lightning now! Loads and loads

calmed down now but was epic for ten minutes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Never a dull day...the heat from the lava channels promoting the air above it to spin occasionally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,227 ✭✭✭pad199207

    Sure why not? 🤣

Looks to be a lot pressure in the vent this morning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

A lot of ash being pumped out today. It's hard to tell during daylight but sounds quite active. The fountains were going strong overnight as well.

More activity earthquake wise. Lots since 9pm.

Woke up to see it was a very, very busy night for earthquakes! Lava must be on the move up. No end in sight for the people of La Palma it would seem.

The Earthquakes are much shallower too. A big increase overnight. Wait and see at the surface...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

One quake after another at the moment in the range broadly 2.5 to 3.8 magnitude and at much shallower depth than recent days, around 10 - 15km. Previously it was 30km +.

The surge is so big this could be near record or a new record for earthquakes today if the pace continues.

Also one of the lava tunnels got blocked overnight and lava now flows a different direction from the base but thankfully over mostly already affected land.

Be interesting to see what the result of this barrage of seismicity will be in the coming hours.

Edit: 164 earthquakes so far since midnight.

    A 4.8 now...depth 35 km.

Vigorous ash expulsion from the cone at the moment (volcanic lightning too). The earthquakes coming thick and fast but unknown among the pros how this will play out at the surface. We don't have long to find out...

    Multiple angles

In terms of pace well on course for a record number of earthquakes today even including the beginning of the eruption so something is happening...

Scale of increase in earthquakes so far today...

Just seeing some big fountains starting to emerge from the cone intermittedly between the sulfur dioxide on the live streams. Looks like could be the start of new activity with all these earthquakes. This could be an interesting night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Getting more explosive at the top of the cone...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,227 ✭✭✭pad199207

    Certainly is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Latest number of earthquakes today. 3 hours, 30 minutes to go to break the record for the eruption.

Going strong at the top but no camera focused on the cone atm

On a separate note I see Volcanologists are A-list celebrities now. Poor man 😂

Have anxiety as no cameras trained on the cone! If anyone has links? All the usual sources focussed on the lava flow. Later on could be epic on account of the seismic craziness taking place today. And I don’t wanna miss it.

The top of the volcano really getting going now. Two active vents there now and the ash has more or less stopped. The noise has increased markedly in the last hour.

This guy has been doing great on location reporting from the start, here is the latest from him tonight. I highly recommend his daily vids. As an aside it looks like today broke the record for the number of earthquakes.

Two large lava streams pouring out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

First meaningful rain in the area tonight since the volcano started. It is absolutely belting down at the moment and there are warnings out for the effects of Ash mixed with heavy rainfall, landslides and floods.

Ash mixed with rain can become as heavy as concrete so roof or even building collapse is another concern.

Most views blocked by rising steam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

A new vent at the front of the cone that was spewing lava yesterday (see pics above) is now pumping out ash for the first time.

If it's an ash vent now then the lava will have to find a new exit soon presumably? Or maybe it will just be intersperse between the two...

    Ah there we go

    It's going full Krakatoa 😋

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,227 ✭✭✭pad199207

Plenty of steam coming off it

Looks like a pretty substantial overflow of lava now all of a sudden

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Here comes the magma...keep an eye on that crater

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,024 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Lava now overflowing the crater. Can see two lava fountains.

Decent speed to that lava flow 😯
