Finding out what’s going on ‘down there’

Hi ladies! Just wondering if there’s anyone in a similar situation who can give advice.

Have had irregular periods for about 3yrs now. Everything from not coming at all, to coming and not stopping. Became quite concerned about fertility at the start of this year and began tracking. September period came, and didn’t stop. After almost a full month I contacted my doctor and was written off work and referred straight to hospital for an ultrasound.

Go to hospital get bloods done by a lovely nurse (who was very concerned) and then met the doctor. He seemed to write everything off as me having a bad period. Told me I looked comfortable and there was nothing they could do for me.

Gave me a prescription to stop the bleeding and told me he’d get my doctor to refer me to a gynaecologist. When I mentioned the fact that I was literally referred for an ultrasound he said they only do them in certain situations. Then paused looked at my chart and decided I did need one after all. Am now waiting on a call for the ultra, which will more than likely cut into another day of work.

The whole interaction was exactly why I waited so long to do anything. I felt like I wouldn’t be listened to or believed.

Im just curious if other women in a similar situation found the process of finding out what’s going on difficult. Did you feel as though you weren’t taking seriously?

Yes, I always got listened to when it was a female doctor. All I can say is keep pushing for a diagnosis - even if you pester the doctor and the only reason they refer you is to get peace and quiet, it's worth it to try to find out what's going on.

Yes, me too. I found male and female doctors were both bad, except for the very last doctor I saw who just had a chat with me to close my issue out. She (diplomatically) admitted that I was wasting my time pursuing the problem and that she knew that many other patients had had trouble with one particular doctor I had issues with. I had left my appointment with him in tears though, so I don't know if the hospital maybe set me up with her because they thought a complaint was on the way.

In retrospect, I wish I had complained, but at the time I felt so extremely helpless that it didn't even occur to me that I had a voice in the situation, and looking back now, it feels too long ago to go back and complain.

I found it incredibly difficult to get an ultrasound, but the one bit of good news I have for you is that the sonographer was actually grand, didn't speak down to me at all.

I haven't had a smear test since, despite the reminder letter coming through the door. It just feels so pointless because if they find anything, I don't think I could bear to go back to the hospital.
