There will be consumption for the inverter to simply operate, whether or not there is any charge or discharge. Then you have conversion losses changing for AC to DC and DC to AC which is separate. Then you have loss through the cables in the form of heat. A shorter cable will lose less than a longer one. This is the tax you pay for your setup. Multiply your gains by 0.9 and this will give you a good idea of where you stand on average.

Yeah thanks guys, and this is why (on the Seplos discussion) I want to make sure I am maximising both charging and discharging of the battery and at the same time minimise any internal energy use.

It looks like the Solis hybrid is limited to 500ah capacity in the battery settings on the inverter. Is there a fix for this? What does everyone with two 15kWh battery (600ah) banks get by this?

Thanks to all for the help. Does anyone know, if in the event of a power cut, I have a double socket setup for emergency use but will the solis still be drawing 100 to 150w as the minimum just to still be running? Or maybe would it reduce its own demand to run if the grid is down?

That would be a shame if still taking that much power to just supply one socket, would seriously reduce the available power remaining in the battery.

I'm fairly sure it still uses as much, I always keep a good reserve in the batteries in winter due to the amount of power cuts I get. Power was gone for 2 days after the storm but I had my batteries at 100% so I was ok and during daylight hours I ran off solar.

I'm not sure I understand your question. The Ah setting is per cell and only applies per pack (per BMS iiuc).

    So for example, my cells are 305Ah. At 3.2V that's 976Wh. I have 16 cells per pack. The pack is (976Wh X 16) 15.6kWh.

I don't know what the max cell size is, but I haven't seen more than 315Ah available from the likes of NKON, which would bring a 16 cell pack up to just over 16kWh. A 500Ah cell would be over 19kWh if available. We are probably a while away from that at domestic level.

If the inverter is on, it will draw power. So yeah, I would expect it to draw the usual amount. If you have a 15kWh battery with say 13kWh useable, the loss will be about 2.5kWh over a 24 hour period. If you have filled that battery at around 10c per unit, then it will be a loss of 25c over the 24 hours. Small price to pay for the convenience IMO.

Reminds me….I really ought to connect my AC Output. We had a power cut a week ago which only lasted a couple of hours, but I would like my fridge to be on a constant supply. I will have to look into this, as I think a change-over is needed to make use of this feature. Anyone else confirm this, or can I use the AC output as a backup without a change-over?

I was running a double socket off my Solis for that but decided to just get the changeover switch after a while. I think a few boardsies had fans and other things running off it on timers to keep the inverter cool in summer. @SD_DRACULA I think was one.

Thanks, yes not too bad really, can live with that. I think I did read that if connected to the AC output anything on that will remain live if grid goes down and therefore no changeover switch would be needed? Could be wrong but I think a changeover would only be needed if wanting to power the whole house.. up to 5kw anyway.

Loving my system anyway and thanks also for your videos, which helped me understand all this. I built the seplos vertical and that all went well and now live for just 5 days or so and run so far 100% on the battery. also load shifting dishwasher etc onto the 2 - 6am EV rate, love it!

I think I will wire up the AC Output and test it with the inverter off. I'm sure it will work, but I can't say 100%. I will look into change-over setups at some stage. It's not necessary for now and would be of a nice to have than a need to have. Power outages are very rare where I am. Had one a few days ago and I honestly can't remember the last one.

Happy days that my videos have been helpful for you. I was load shifting everything possible to the cheap 2-6 time before I had any batteries and then when I had just the one battery. Once I got 2 batteries and was charging those for the full 4 hours and the EV for the full period, I decided to use the washing machine and dishwasher during the day, with battery power. We got the flexibility back and it also keeps the overall house load within safe parameters.

My inverter is kept in an enclosed side access (side entrance of semi-D) so the temperature in there is ideal for the inverter and batteries. It will stay cooler than the house in the hot months and warmer in the cold months. Coldest it has been in there is just below 12 degrees C.

I suppose if I saw the temps getting high, I could add a fan for efficiency more than anything else. The fridge is pretty much on the other side of the wall where the inverter is, so it would be an easy enough circuit to set up. Though I will probably have someone ride in here on a high horse to tell me that i'm mad and should get a REC to do it.

Strictly speaking this isn't a "settings" question, but it seems to be the best thread to ask in as it's dedicated to Solis inverters

My dad has a 5kw Solis inverter and originally had his panels installed on PV1 input, but at the end of last year he had more panels added and they are connected to PV2 input

While we can look at the live graph data and historical data graphed for each string, I've searched high and low and can't seem to find a simple view showing how much PV1 produced on a given day and how much by PV2. It shows total PV production figure for each day if I go back day by day, but can anybody tell me is there somewhere I'm missing which will show for example

    Total PV production 9.7KWh

    PV1 production 6.7KWh

    PV2 production 3.0KWh

how about going into inverter page in the Solis app and set MPPT1 and MPPT2 as graph parameters? then you can cycle back through the days

Hi, that's what I was saying in my post ("While we can look at the live graph data and historical data graphed for each string, I've searched high and low and can't seem to find a simple view showing how much PV1 produced on a given day and how much by PV2") and it seems to be the only way to view it, but I don't want to view the graph itself, just a total production figure for each day per string. Using the graph will only pinpoint production of each string at a given moment in time.

It just seems very odd that you can view total PV for the day, but something as simple as PV1 daily output and PV2 daily output doesn't seem to exist and I thought maybe I was missing something

    Hi,

I have a Solis Hybrid inverter with 6kw of PV. I will be adding a FOGSTAR 15KW battery in the next few months.

However, I have 8kw of Lead Acid AGM batteries I would like to try out in the meantime. Has anyone used Lead Acid batteries with a Solis S5 Hybrid inverter?? How did they get on?

I know there are serios limitations on the lead acid around how much you can discharge the batteries but I just like to see what they can do.

    Regards

When I adjust the charge/discharge limit, it doesn't appear to make any difference? Does it actually work?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,006 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

Discharge limit is only for the specified discharge times

Anyone else having issues after daylight savings?

Inverter doesn't seem to pick the right time (even after manually configuring it) and messed up with the battery charging schedule. This is configured to be 2~6am but is starting at 1am, runs for 30min, stops and is back again between 2~5am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,682 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

Noticed that it was out an hour although the graph was showing correct time but turns out the inverter itself was out by an hour. Have you checked the time on the inverter?

There is no way to set the inverter to Daylight Saving time. You can manually adjust the time to 1h forward, but it still stay on UTC+0 and eventually it reverts by itself to 1h back.

Even support is now struggling to help with this, they don't understand their own product.

Yeah I saw that alright, so I just went into the settings and got it to sync time with my phone, can also be done using the computer cloud view

Mine discharged an hour late, but stopped charging on time yesterday. Seems to have resolved by itself.

Mine is also doing the same thing but I cannot resolve it. I tried setting it the the phone time and this worked but only for a couple of hours after which it reverted again. I also set it manually this morning around 8:30am but checking now several hours later it has reverted again to GMT and not BST so an hour wrong :(

I saw some discussion on the Facebook group about having DST selected. I don't have it selected and time has stayed correct. Just wondering if that's selected on yours. If so, maybe try disabling it. In the app, on the bottom, select the Me icon and then settings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭soram

Yes that was selected - I think I tried a lot of things for the same issue last year!

I have just deselected it now and will report back………..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭Busman Paddy Lasty

My DTS is on and the time is correct. Maybe I've missed an inverter software update that borked the DST.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,682 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

Hopefully that will sort it, but as @Busman Paddy Lasty says, maybe depends on firmware version which ones it works on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭soram

Nope - didn't sort it out :( - Just checked now and it is back to an hour off…….

I'll send in a ticket to Solis
