English Style Ale

I am fond of an occasional bottle of English Style Ale - Doom Bar being a personal favourite, but I am also fond of the likes of Spitfire, Bishop's Finger etc etc.

You used to be able to get these in Lidl and Aldi once upon a time. My local off license used to have a great selection too and even that has now vanished - whether because of Brexit or because there are loads of Irish breweries now vying for shelf space.

Anyway bottles of English style ale these days are like [old speckled] hen's teeth.

Anyway if anyone has any hot leads as to where stocks them I would appreciate it, or if any Irish craft brewery is making an equivalent either of course I'll happily try that out - I have yet to find one though.

Dungarvan brew beers more to the English style than contemporary US style beers.

Large Tesco stores will still have five or six of the mainstream English ales.

Thanks, I didn't realise this. Mine is the only county in Ireland without a Tesco 😕 I haven't been in one in years.

Didn't Lough Gill do an ESB style beer recently? I had it and really enjoyed it but should have taken it out of the fridge earlier. You used to be able to get London Pride in a lot of offies but haven't seen it in a while. I'm guessing if you've no Tesco near you that there definitley won't be a Marks & Spenser, they usually have a decent selection.

Havent seen spitfire or bishops finger in ages in a Tescos, OP if you find any, let me know, I used to buy them.

I buy london pride, and Speckled hen, they are all that Tescos have and that was for a long time before Brexit too, hobgoblin used to be ok, think they changed it, but Im sure there were a few variants of it before, now only one. There does seem to be a lot more Irish Craft beers available, IPAs, I like them but they arent cheap and there is a wide variety to choose from, most are ok, a few Ive had arent great.

I havent been to a Lidl in a while so Im not sure what they have these days (hated the queues so stopped going) but they did have some craft beers they seemed to specialise in, almost own brand.

M&S had a selection, I wouldnt call it significant, a few options, again I used to think they had more and that has been closer to Brexit, before and after.

Lidl are selling a box of 6 English Ales at the moment. Hobgoblin, cumberland, marstons etc. For some reason its priced at €16 this time. Last time they had it, was around €10.

But yeh, Lidl rarely have any English ales they're not as common in shops as they once were. Possibly due to the craft/ipa boom.

Decent off-licences like Molloys should have some. Tesco ususally have Speckled Hen and Hobgoblin.

The local spar used always have Worthington's which I thought was nice. Haven't checked recently though so not sure if it is still available.
