Had an order cancelled when I was 5 minutes away.

Second one was from Salumi grazing in terenure. 2 Danish pastries and an apple pastry and a single chocolate truffle. Nothing special for the money to be honest.

There's a vegetarian filter on the app that you could apply

Reading the reviews on this thread for most of the places, wouldn't lure me in at all. Cafes up their prices for dine in because you're paying for the experience, the location, heat etc. You can get all of the above in Lidl, freshly baked, at a cost of 40-60c each and they're just as nice if not nicer.

  • Registered Users Posts: 133 ✭✭stephenmario

I was thinking the same. For the same price, in Lidl you could get a selection of your choice. Who wants 7 pastries at once anyway?

€4.99 from "Oh Happy Treats" in Sandyford. Hard to find but I feel like this was worth it.

3 of the same brownie - but they're amazing, with caramel and Oreo cookie baked in them. Unreal.

1 x almond and raspberry muffin, 1 x pistachio muffin.

They're also all very big sizes.

Lahoya Greens €3.99 - not bad at all. 2 natural yoghurts, a loaf of bread, chicken goujons and a massive pecan pie

i'm loving this thread becasue its not just bargains, its also food porn 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,769 ✭✭✭SmallTeapot

I also picked up a 2good2go order at LaHoya Greens yesterday evening :)

I got a sourdough French stick, a tray of chicken goujons, 2 chilled tubs of chicken satay (which were individually priced as €12.50 alone!) a yoghurt and roast beef sandwiches. 😎

I put the goujons and satay into the freezer for another day (hoping they’ll be ok…?) and had a lovely sandwich and yoghurt for late dinner…. Did you freeze your goujons smiley, or did you consume straight away?

Also what a beautiful shop! I’d never been there before, but I’d definitely go there on a normal day to pick up some treats….😋

Some savage stuff on here, thanks OP!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,668 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

@SmallTeapot with food dated to go off the following day the best way to do it is freeze it as soon as you get home but also dont defrost it in the fridge,, instead use the defrost function on your microwave and then reheat using the full power settings. That way you dont give it a chance to actually go off. Ive had short dated stuff before where Ive defrosted it in the fridge for 8-10 hours but it then went off during that time.

Great advice - thank you! So when I want to use the chicken goujons, I take them out of the freezer… then chuck them straight away into the microwave to defrost… and then I can cook them in the oven straight after that? (…And apply the same principle to the satay, but cook that in a saucepan…rather than the oven?)…I’ve also never actually froze a full meal before (I.e curry, satay, etc.!) 😅

Is it ok to defrost chicken in the microwave? What am I looking for (appearance wise) when it comes to defrosting in the microwave…?

Sorry for all the questions…I’m new to this! And want to avoid wasting anything….!

Picked up my first bag yesterday from the Irish Food Emporium.

Not bad. 2 jars of peanut butter from an Irish brand that I can't remember the name of, a seeded sourdough loaf from Bretzel Bakery and a make your own sourdough starter with 1.2kg of strong flour.

Sorry just seeing this now. Yep just straight from freezer to microwave with all packaging removed and put it in a microwave safe container, if its a soup/curry its best to transfer it to a microwave safe container first and then freeze it in that. Then select the defrost function on your microwave and then when its thawed into the oven or a pot on the stove if its a curry/soup. The appearance of food defrosting shouldnt change, if it does you've left it in too long and it is now cooking. So red meat should still be red after defrosting, if its turned brown its gone too far. The food itself should only be very slightly warm to the touch, if it is hot its began cooking and things like chicken will turn into a rubbery texture, not nice. It is also important from a food safety point of view that when defrosted you cook that food immediately, if you left it there for an hour before cooking then bacteria would have had a chance to grow and multiply and the food could make you sick. But once the food is used immediately its perfectly safe. But just be mindful that straight after defrosting the food is now in the danger zone which is why it needs to be cooked straight away to kill off any bacteria.

Also with defrosting in the microwave its important to flip food over (or if a curry/soup then stir it) half way through the process, if you dont then part of it can be still frozen as microwaves have hot and cold spots. So if you are defrosting for a total of 8 minutes set it for 4 minutes then flip/stir the food and go again for another 4 minutes. But if starting off Id use 2 minute increments becasue food will vary on how long it takes to defrost depending on its weight. Check it every 2 minutes, see how hard/cold it is and flip or stir it and go for another 2 minutes and repeat as needed. Also some microwaves defrost using a very low 100 watts whereas others use 300 watts so its good to start with 2 minute increments until you get to 'know' your microwave and how quickly it defrosts food. If defrosting something really light like 2 slices of bread or a roll use 1 minute increments.

You are fine to defrost pieces of chicken in the microwave but if you are freezing a whole chicken its best to cut it into 4 pieces first as some parts of a whole bird defrost quicker than others if doing it in the microwave. Also defrost two legs together but defrost a leg and a breast separately as they are different sizes/weights and one will defrost before the other and begin to cook.

Collecting bags from FX Buckley and Toons Bridge Dairy this evening - can't wait to see what's in them!

There are definitely more and more non-bakery places joining up (I have absolutely zero interest in sweet treats) but supply is definitely very limited (which is a good thing, imo, as it means that outlet is managing inventory properly) and you need to be checking the app a few times a day as they get snapped up in seconds.

Also, can I finally put to bed the legend of the 1kg fish pie - I said "That weighs about a kilo" as an offhand comment 😁 I can confirm it actually weighed 454g (or a pound in old money) and it was delicious!

Fingers crossed that it's a Tomahawk steak from FX Buckley!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,841 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

    So, great haul!

    From FXB I got:

Garlic and lemon hummus, a big tray of gratin potatoes and a pound of steak mince

    Toons Bridge:

2 fancy sausage rolls, a loaf of rosemary bread, a huge slice of pizza, a big tub of fancy slaw and a big tub of tapenade.

Very happy with all that for €7.98!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,841 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

The prices were on everything so I totted it up and I got €42.50 worth of food. You can't really argue with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,822 ✭✭✭Patsy167

That's a generous selection you got. Looks to be their sun dried tomato focaccia rather than pizza but same difference for most people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,841 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

Nope, definitely veggie pizza. That'll be today's lunch!

As an aside, the FXB shop on Pembroke Street is GORGEOUS. Genuine foodie heaven.

Got a bag from Keoghs. 3 scones, 1 muffin and a Danish. The guy randomly selected products when I went in.

The scones were very tasty. Great flavours.
