Another consultation has opened on the South Wexford network, and plans to change route 370:

Public consultation on planned enhancement of Bus Route 370 Waterford to Wexford

    29TH APRIL 2024

Enhanced bus route 370 Waterford to Wexford

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has today opened a public consultation on plans to improve the levels of service on bus route 370, operated by Bus Éireann, from Waterford to Wexford.

Improved level of service and operation hours

The NTA is proposing to improve the level of service and hours of operation on the corridor between Waterford and Wexford, via south Wexford.

The revised network will provide greater public transport accessibility in South Wexford to areas including Campile, Ramsgrange, Duncannon, and Wellingtonbridge.

The plans include the addition of later evening services throughout the week, improved Saturday services and the introduction of Sunday services for the first time along the route.

Serving Glenmore, New Ross, Campile, Ramsgrange, Duncannon, Wellingtonbridge, Wexford General Hospital and Wexford Train Station

The newly enhanced 370 Route will operate six times per day, per direction, Monday to Sunday from Waterford Bus Station, serving Glenmore, New Ross, Campile, Ramsgrange, Duncannon, Wellingtonbridge, Wexford General Hospital and Wexford Train Station.

A number of these services will include extensions to Rosslare Europort, Rosslare Harbour, Kilrane, Tagoat, Rosslare Strand, Wexford Trinity Street, Waterford College, Waterford HSE, Waterford SETU and University Hospital Waterford.

Bus services will operate from early morning to late evening and will provide onward connections to rail, local bus and regional bus services.

Route 370 will no longer serve Ballinaboola and Bridgetown, which are now served by regular Local Link bus services.

The public consultation will run for three weeks and closes at 4pm on Monday 20th of May.

I would just to like to update that this route change never happened and there is no news at all to be found about it. Total joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,034 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

Actually there is news about it. The route change on the 243 should be happening in the coming months as per the last page of the quarterly update document posted by me on 26th April above if you take the time to check it out.

All of the changes are dependent on driver resources being available. It is proving challenging for all bus companies to recruit drivers at the moment, so I would cut them some slack. It will happen, but the date of implementation is probably a bit of a moving feast.

I just found out about the new 359 route today, & as a young adult who isn't driving yet, it's great news (though it'd be pretty good news, anyway)!

I'm very pleased, the route's sorely needed. I'm impressed with the number & range of journeys, too, 5 most days is very good & more than I would've expected. It means I can be much more flexible with my plans than if there were 3.

Next up are improvements on route 276 between Dingle and Castlemaine which will now be extended to Killarney from June 3rd.

This will presumably now replace the summer only Bus Éireann route 276 that traditionally ran from the end of June until the end of August.

Also in Kerry, it appears that Bus Éireann route 274 between Tralee and Ballyheigue has been quietly withdrawn, with Local Link route 274 having been launched last year covering that route.

Bus Éireann are also deploying some LF double deck coaches on route 275 between Tralee and Dingle for the summer.

The route will enhance connectivity to villages and areas such as Lios Póil, Annascaul, Inch, Ballyarkane, Boolteens, Castlemaine, Milltown, Listry, Faha and Fossa and will provide improved connectivity to regional bus services to facilitate onward travel.

Improved connectivity for Lios Póil, Annascaul, Inch, Ballyarkane, Boolteens, Castlemaine, Milltown, Listry, Faha and Fossa

Speaking ahead of the launch, TFI Local Link General Manager, Alan O’Connell said: “In partnership with the NTA we are delighted to extend Route 276 to Killarney. Two iconic towns will be connected by regular public transport bus services which is a significant boost for local residents and tourists.

“This enhanced service will not only support tourism but will also boost the local economy by making the villages of Inch, Castlemaine, Milltown, Listry and Faha more accessible for residents, providing a convenient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly way to travel with regular buses seven days a week.

“Passengers will have the added benefit of enjoying the stunning landscapes on offer in Inch without the stress of driving.

So refreshing to come on here every couple of months and see these updates. Rare to see so much progress being made in a short space of time in this country, this is something that is greatly enhancing the appeal of public transport among all segments of the population.

Really hope that there are no cutbacks in the future.

    Connecting Ireland project update

    https://www.transportforireland.ie/news/over-100-new-and-enhanced-bus-routes-launched-under-the-connecting-ireland-programme/

Over 100 new and enhanced bus routes launched under the Connecting Ireland programme

    30th July 2024

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has today published the Connecting Ireland, Phase Two Implementation Review.

The report examines the rollout of greatly improved bus services in rural areas under the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan.  The aim of the five-year programme is to improve rural bus services, therefore, giving more people access to reliable and frequent public transport services connecting towns and townlands.

65 new and enhanced bus services, improved connectivity for 190 towns

In 2023, the NTA launched a total of 65 Connecting Ireland routes, 24 new and 41 enhanced bus services, expanding our Transport for Ireland (TFI) public transport network.

Last year, a total of 4.7 million passenger journeys were recorded on Connecting Ireland rural bus routes, with new connections established to 190 towns and villages, 34 colleges and 42 hospitals as well as offering 49 connections to onward rail services.

Growth of 110% in just 4 years by the end of 2023

The patronage on Connecting Ireland bus services saw a growth of 110% by the end of 2023, compared to 2019.  The number of passengers using these services in rural Ireland increased by 70% year-on-year from 2022 to 2023.

2024 is the third year of the five year Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan and the NTA aims to continue introducing, new and enhanced, bus services across the State.

Details are available at the full Connecting Ireland Phase Two Implementation Review 2023.

"The enhanced route will improve connectivity to Mallow Train Station, regional bus services"

But for anyone actually paying a fare, there is still no integrated ticketing, not even with other PSO services.

I'd love to know the current cost per passenger for these routes, 10 years ago before all the expansion it was something like €14 subsidy per passenger.

  • Registered Users Posts: 68 ✭✭The Mathematician

According to https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/question/2023-10-10/56/ the cost in 2023 was 8.35 million and according to https://www.nationaltransport.ie/publications/connecting-ireland-phase-2-review/ there were 4.7 million journeys in 2023. So the cost per passenger was about 1.78 euro. The key difference now is that these routes are actually usable, not like the one bus once a week that used to be the case in a lot of areas.

I think this is a very small price to pay for something that really is life changing for a lot of people, and that is not even considering the reduction in external costs, such as reduction in emissions etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,034 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

You can use LEAP/TFI Go app on these services though, which offers a common payment method.

Local Link fares are quite low which does make them affordable.

These expanded services are changing how people can access employment and tourism across rural Ireland and that has to be a good thing.

Would just like to update that the enhanced route for 243 was never implemented in Q2, much to the surprise of no one. I believe it’s well over 2 years now since the route was first marked for “enhancement”.
I’m sure they are still throwing out the not enough bus drivers excuse when the rest of the country seems to be fine. Hard to believe a relatively densely populated area of North Cork is struggling for drivers…it’s hardly the back of beyond!

The rest of the country isn't struggling for drivers? Are you being serious?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,034 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

Cork has the worst driver shortage in the country.

Bus Éireann are about 35 drivers short in Capwell.

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/munster/arid-41458924.html

Plenty of other plans have had to be deferred around the country for the same reason, such as many of the BusConnects phases in Dublin.

You’re just going to have to be patient.

I wish they'd stop saying "will offer improved connectivity to the regional bus and rail services", when it's absolutely not true....

Not a single one of those bus arrival/departures times connects with a train, including the new 'Friday only enhanced' route.

Some decent service extensions in Donegal announced, will leave it to LXflyer to format up the press release.

The idea of Burtonport having up to 11 services a day (between the extended service announced today and some other services) when it used to have two a day on Lough Swilly ~20 years ago is still hard to imagine. And the Locallink services actually turn up - the Swilly often didn't!

The 992 could do with revision to actually be useful for flights at CFN, it currently isn't; do hope that's on the list for future improvements.

Absolutely, there are now three enhancements announced for northwest Donegal.

In addition to the enhancement of services between Letterkenny and the Fanad Peninsula from next Monday mentioned above, two further enhancements have been announced from Monday 14th October.

First is a large expansion of route 953 between Letterkenny and the eastern part of the Inishowen Peninsula as far as Greencastle and Shrove Lighthouse.

Route 953 with enhanced connectivity to ATU Donegal, Moville, Quigley’s Point, Muff and Bridgend.

Route 953 will now operate eight daily return services Monday to Friday, seven daily return services on Saturdays and six daily return services on Sundays. The other enhancement is, as already mentioned, a big increase in service levels between Letterkenny and Burtonport (via Dungloe) which sees route 271 replaced by route 971 (the NTA are obviously taking the opportunity to renumber some of the Donegal routes that clash with routes elsewhere).

For those not proficient in Irish place names, the route serves the Donegal Gaeltacht, and in English is Burtonport to Letterkenny, via Dungloe, Loughanure, Crolly, Dunlewey and then Glenveigh and Church Hill.

It is again a sizeable expansion, with the frequency more than doubled and converting to a seven day operation.

I would totally agree with this. It's great to see these sorts of links being established and, more to the point, people actually using them.

It will be interesting to see if the Malin and Carndonagh areas get an increase in due course as well.

I'd also agree about the 992 - it needs a timetable recast as it was designed back when the lunchtime Dublin flights arrived and departed later.

Is there any statistics on how many are using the services in the likes of North and West Donegal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,730 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Only ever seen the headline figure - 3.2m system wide for 2023.

Some of the Donegal services I've been on have potentially unsuitably big vehicles as that's what the contracting companies have; so some of the services might look a bit under-used but that's cause 15 people rattling around a 53 seater looks a lot lighter than a 30 seater. But more comfortable than the 30 seater!
