Has Tayto completly lost it?

Is it me or has the flavor in tayto gone shite these last years? I lived in England back in early 90s, ate Walkers crisps there, dreaming about tayto every mouthful. Then I came home to Ireland mid 90s, and got back on the tayto/king program, all happy. But something has changed in recent years, and I am not sure what. This evening, me and the family did a side by side comparison with tayto salted and Walkers, and the walkers were head and shoulders above. I can't not believe I prefer 'British' potatoes and flavoring now- can't believe it! WTF has happened?!

Side note, not directly related, can crisps manufactures please feck off with adding sugar to crisps? Please just feck off with that shite. Thank you.

Salted crisps are never much to begin with.

I do think in general Tayto crisps can be hit and miss depending on the batch you get tough.

Talking of crisps, Aldi's Okey dokey crisps have a whopping 41% fat content.

The best Tayto you'll get will be the multipack boxes at Christmas.

Don't really care of the brand once they're tasty. Whatever potato Walkers use is actually quite tasty, it's a bit firmer or something than Tayto.

More of a King guy over Tayto, but Manhattan is where it's at, esp with a pint!

That's not really the important part though. How much of it is saturated fat? That's really the key question.

If it's mostly non saturated, and mostly low sugar carbs, then you're mostly okay.

Still a high fat food and high in salt, so moderation is key. But crisps are not really that unhealthy. Their reputation is somewhat unwarranted compared with other snacks.

King and Manhattan are both superior in flavor and texture I find...mind you I picked up a couple of packets of Smokey Bacon Taylor for the first time in years, and they were nice.

All these new fancy names must be a great marketing success. Plain old Cheese and Onion doesn't sound as good. But I suspect the other ingredients are what might make them moreish.

E621 is MSG. The food programme on BBC Radio 4 did a feature on it a while back. Turns out it is not as bad as it's reputation. E635 is something I never heard of.

But the best and most flavoursum Irish crisps are Manhattan. Been around for years. Never sold out like the other ones. Still Irish.

During the snow storm and the start of the pandemic, I witnessed people in Lidl Nenagh fighting over bread, potatoes, chocolate, sugar and Taytos. Nobody was buying fresh meat or vegetables.

I stumbled upon the combination of those fancy tayto cheese and onion (tayto occasions??) and a Cooleeney brie or camembert. Fantastic. A bit of tomato relish gives it a nice lift also.

But it has to be the fancy taytos. I've tried other types of cheese and onion and they just don't cut it.

I get them in the two local Spars, which happen to be the closest shops to my house. Manhattan cheese'n'onion are my favourite crisps at the moment. They only do the big bags, though (which is both good and bad). 😉

O'Donnells are made by Intersnack/Tayto. May be that they consider them the premium product now.

Another vote for Manhattan Cheese and Onion. Their crisps aren’t as widely available as their popcorn and peanuts range, which is a shame as they are very good.

Agree about Manhattan- I’m off to the website to stock up on cheese and onion - they’re about 75c a 35 gram bag which is not at all cheap compared to the Tayto boxes but they’re far yummier
