Are we the only country in the EU not to expel non-contributing people from other EU countires?

Whilst the EU allows for freedom of movement, provisions are there to allow member states to expel people from other member states who are not financially independent or who are causing trouble or becoming a burden on society.

There are several non-Irish on the housing list who have NEVER contributed and who are also claiming the dole.

Can we not implement mandatory registration of abode like they have in the rest of Europe? People are flying in weekly to collect dole and flying home.

you realise, surely, that jobseekers allowance requires regular check-ins and you must at least once a month I believe prove you're actively seeking work.

I'd really love to see something that proves this claim because it's absurd.

full JSA is what like €200? whos flying from somewhere in Europe to Ireland to collect €200 and fly back again like.. are you mad? a ticket for the plane alone is gonna skin you at LEAST half of that money, then there's getting to and from the airport, eating, I assume they do and so on.

Have you heard of Ryanair by any chance?

People have been caught doing it plenty. It's a return flight once a month (50 quid booked well in advance) and if someone claims for themselves, partner and 2 kids it's over 400 a week. Or about 1800 a month. It's pretty well worthwhile. Roughly triple the minimum wage in Poland and lovely and tax free. There's been cases where people were caught doing it. This is actually factually true. When the ash cloud hit a few years back there was a noticeable amount of people (thousands) who were unable to appear for the standard call ins. It was certainly financially beneficial to fly in and out. The reality is inspecting people more regularly is not worth the cost for the amount of fraud they would find. When they were introducing the Safe card it was rolled out county by county and the claims could be seen moving over to the next county which made it very easy to spot the claims. Rarely prosecute people and mostly deduct from any legitimate claims.

Yes people do come to Ireland and report homeless upon arrival and are given emergency housing and put on the housing list. Reality is it is a very small amount and other countries in the EU do not do this and deport them. We should do the same but again it isn't much and cost is likely not worth it. I also believe our constitution is in play the same way begging can't be illegal here.

I seem to recall that a woman was caught and prosecuted for doing this a few years back, so it is obviously illegal.

Not alone do we not expel non-contributors from abroad, we welcome them, even though they haven't paid a penny in tax or PRSI, and we put them up in 700k apartments in Dublin.

Why can't JSA require a daily visit to the post office to collect your money?

People going to work have to make the daily commute, very often several kilometers and spending up to an hour (sometimes more) to get to work and often end up netting less than someone on JSA or JSB after paying rent / mortgage / crèche fees / commuting costs / tax / USC.

I don't see how it conflicts with the CTA. Everyone in the EU has freedom of movement in each others' countries and they still have to register their abode. Even a Dutch person moving from Arnhem to Utrecht will have to register her / his new address in the "town hall".

Being outside the Schengen (unfortunately), why can't we implement exit checks in out airport to non-UK destinations?

I'm pro EU. My dad is from Sweden and my mam is Irish (although I was born in Täby 2 years before we joined the EU 😝

There's a point when the system starts to be abused. Even if I tried to return to Sweden 10 years after I moved here, if I tried going back to claim benefits I'd probably be told to take a hike ...even though I'm a dual citizen and have been since birth.

What is ?

Under EU law an EU citizen only has the right to reside in another EU country for 3 months and after that they have to be working or not working but able to support themselves, be a student or a family member of somebody working here. I know that's not enforced here but do other EU countries actually enforce this?
