Best time to move this Scrub.

Hi all, just doing some pruning, tidying for the winter. I have this fabulous shrub, I can't recall what it is.

It's getting a little to big for current location, I was thinking of moving it.

When would the best time to move it,

Two photos, one in bloom to help identify, one just now as leaves start to fall off, this is the one I want to move,

Looks like some sort of weigela. This type of shrub at this size is easily moved. Wait until it's dormant and no longer in leaf. Prepare the hole in the new location First then dig thus out with as much of the rootball as possible. Firm it in to the new hole and water well.

Thanks Jim, appreciate that , will prepare new location in the coming days, I've taken 3 cuttings off original shrub and it's thrived.

You can cut it back severely, though you may miss out on flowering the first year after this. There may be no need to move it.

Thank you, I had considered that , the plot were it is has a number of other flowering plants, shrubs etc and this particular shrub is taking over, , also restricts ability to turn soil, weeding etc. I've identified a perfect spot beside a pond for relocation, more direct sun also which will allow it grow and expand unhibited so to speak. 😏

Don't forget to give it miracle gro or similar plant food when replanted.

If you have other plants it's worth getting miracle gro anyway. I use it from March/April to September and my plants really blossom throughout the growing season.

Quick addional question rather than starting thread if I may.

Very dissapointing year for Hydrangea, barely a bloom on my three plants. Fantastic and healthy leaves but no flowers. I've see some think it was that unexpected frost in March. Previous years had fabulous flowers.

With no flowering would it be necessary to prune 🤔

I've often wondered about Miracle grow and will definitely get some. I'm moving this particular shrub into a new area, digging up small area of lawn beside a pond, make a feature out of it and plan just to let it do it thing with no other plants as such 😏

No flowers can often be as a result of too much nitrogen and not enough phosphorous but this year it was the late spring frost. Pruning at the wrong time can also the culprit. You could prune now if you wish but not necessary unless you want to maintain size or shape.

Best of luck with it. Tomato feed is another fertilizer you should consider getting. It's not only useful for growing tomatoes:)

I wouldn't add any liquid feed at transplanting a dormant shrub. An absolute waste.

The Soil is quite good were I'm replanting and I'll mix in some compost before moving the shrub, I see the point re Miracle Grow and Feed re dormant shrub so my plan is to get the feed in March etc 😏
